..to wish Andy Murray would shut his mouth?

I know he's a brilliant player, the best we've got etc..but why does he have to celebrate every point with that hideous, square-jawed, gurning, faux wild-animal roar? There was a pic of his mother on the front page last week with exactly the same expression. Put me off my porridge.

Come to think of it...has anyone ever seen him and his Mum in the same place a once?

OP posts:
tametiger · 30/06/2010 12:01

at once...

Andy Murray is the Gordon Brown of tennis. Nuff said.

Butterbur · 30/06/2010 12:47

Saw him talking to a presenter on the news this AM. I've never seen anyone speak while moving so little of his face. He was completely expressionless. Even his mouth barely moved. I don't think he's a real person at all. He must be an android.

TheCrackFox · 30/06/2010 12:53

Andy Murray is never going to win "most charismatic man of the year award", is he?

As for his mum I get the distinct impression that she would be the MIL from hell.

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 12:56

oh goodness Tennis is SO much more of a sport than football.

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 12:59

and yes he can smile

oh and look again

oh again

HippyGalore · 30/06/2010 13:02

He isn't selling himself on his looks or personality but on his sporting prowess, so I think YABU. He works hard at his sport, behaves well (always shakes hands, doesn't do any sort of wild drinking, drug or rape allegations) I much prefer him as a role model than the current England football team, so what if he is emotionally involved in his sport - it has been his whole life for a long time now. Good luck to him!

laurielee · 30/06/2010 13:09

YANBU - I find him intensely irritating, for the reasons you mention, but also something else which for some reason I cannot identify. Mind you, I quite often take against people for no real reason - such a lovely character trait!

LetThereBeRock · 30/06/2010 13:10

I guess those count as smiles even if they might scare children.

TheCrackFox · 30/06/2010 13:14

Does he dye his hair? In all 3 pictures he has a different colour.

Rockbird · 30/06/2010 13:44

I debate his 'sporting prowess'. If we had any decent players here he'd be way down the list. He's all we've got, that's his sporting prowess. He might work hard at it but that doesn't make him any good.

StrictlyTory · 30/06/2010 13:51

When they do the slow mo's of his Mum cheering I can see so clearly where AM gets his lovely good looks from

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 14:11

Rockbird - if we had better players we'd have the 1st,2nd and 3rd best players in the world........

Andy Murray is currently ranked no4 in the world.......not just number 1 in the UK.........

hmc · 30/06/2010 14:26

I'd do him in the 'yes he can smile' link that tocatta posted (if someone could lend me a bag to put over his head)

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 14:28

lol hmc - I'd had the same thoughts myself - he's ermm, quite fit isn't he

ifiwereamillionaire · 30/06/2010 14:36

holy crap. who knew that body was under his t-shirt!

YABU because the guy is performing well and winning so is entitled to roar if he likes.
Lots of sports men/women do a stupid dance if they score a goal or win a tournament so it's not unusual.

What about Bannockburn?

expatinscotland · 30/06/2010 14:41

I couldn't abide that boring horse-mouthed Tim Henman.

But then, never had to much since he never made it to a final.

Unlike Murray.

Haahaaahaa.

yama · 30/06/2010 14:49

Well said HippyGalore.

I love Andy Murray.

If the roaring helps him win - let him ROAR!

So much better than that Bruce Forsythesque rolled fist thing that Henman did.

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 14:51

wow talking of tennis Federed is 2 sets to 1 down at the moment!

OrmRenewed · 30/06/2010 14:51

Especially when he says anything,

5DollarShake · 30/06/2010 14:53

YANBU - the roar/gurn is quite off-putting. Seriously - can he get his mouth open any wider??

And then you see him being interviewed a bit later, and it's like his jaw is wired shut, so little does he open it.

I am not English, British or Scottish, so this is just an observation, but I love how Scots defend their right to support 'anyone but England', and then take against English people who have no desire whatsoever to support Andy Murray / respect his skill.

toccatanfudge · 30/06/2010 14:55

some of you obviously don't watch much tennis - Murray's roar is NOTHING compared to some of the players on the tour at the moment

Whelk · 30/06/2010 14:58

He is a sportsman. And a bloody brilliant one! Who cares what he looks/sounds like? Why is everyone expected to be bloody media friendly these days?

Too many 'bloodys' in that grumpy post obviously but I'm feeling grizzly!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 30/06/2010 15:01

toccata that first picture is very, er, interesting!

Rockbird how can you debate his prowess?? He is world number 4, there is nothing to debate.
