Have you tried it? Does it work?

OP posts:
mistressploppy · 29/06/2010 09:27

I tried it. It did work. Got bored. Stopped. Got fat again.

Same as all diets

Why is this in AIBU?!

If you follow it properly, then yes it will work.

It's essentially a low carb plan that starts off exluding a lot of carbs, but by the final phase you have re-incorporated these.

India Knight and Neris Thomas apparently both lost 5 stones when they were creating it.

The book is a very good read, and definitely worth getting, if you haven't already.

smugmumofboys · 29/06/2010 09:29

I did but only lasted a week.

I am a veggie though and it's not really compatible (wished I'd known this before buying the book tbh).

By about day 4 I was actually gagging on the amount of fat I was meant to be eating and a gal can only eat so many eggs. It just felt wrong to be missing out fruit and rice etc.

Have since joined Slimming World and lost just under a stone in 7 weeks without feeling deprived in any way.

McSteamy · 29/06/2010 09:29

No idea!!!!! Was NOT supposed to post in AIBU!!!!

I've just lost almost a stone over a few weeks, by putting out my food for the day the night before . I know roughly how many calories I need, and if I eat that food, and that food only, I'll lose weight. Every time I go to sneak extra food, I know I won't lose weight. Do I want to lose weight? Yes. Therefore, I stick to what I've put out. After 6 weeks, though, I'm losing a bit of motivation .

I guess I won't be getting rid of my old clothes then

otchayaniye · 29/06/2010 10:45

Yep, it's like any carb-reduced diet, fills you up so you eat less. Nothing magical about heating you up or speeding up your metabolism. Simply put you can only eat so much protein and fat. Whereas you can eat unlimited crisps/bread/cake/pasta/fruit.

I adopt a low carb diet when I need to lose weight. It's generally effective first off, then hard to maintain. But generally thinking about not eating lots and lots of white carbs and sugar while occassionally indulging in a smaller portion of carby veg or a sandwich means I don't pile it all back on. Little bouts of low-carbing here and there, and running home from work twice a week, and bf (although maybe not) has helped me lose 20 kg I put on when pregnant two years ago (and she only weighed 2.5kg )

Can't NOT drink a glass or two of wine of an evening (guess that makes me a bfeeding alcoholic) so never lose that quickly.

Nice rebranding of Atkins and the recipes are a bit more varied (the curried cauliflower is good)

StillSquiffy · 29/06/2010 11:05

I'm following it at the moment - have been for 6 weeks. Have lost a stone in a very short space of time but have now slowed right down. I think this diet has an advantage over the other ones because it has two USPs:-

  1. It is written by ex-fatties who write very authentically about the down days and the mistakes and how miserable it is to drink gallons of water every day and excercise when your thighs are rubbing together...
  2. It is a bit 'posher' than most diet books so the recipes are much more varied and not just a rehash of the usual 'eggs, eggs, eggs' approach of the usual Atkins books. Also a fair bit of advice on eating out.

I'm not sure it works well at effectively losing weight but I am convinced that it is effective at giving you the right boundaries to eat very healthily indeed. Whilst it feels downright 'odd' not to eat fruit every day, I have connected with the book enough to have estinguished cravings for bread, cakes, pizza, rice, pasta etc etc, and can even prepare this stuff quite happily for my kinds without any urge to eat it myself (so far).

I have tried proper Atkins before but used to despair of ever going 'dark' on the keto sticks and I was always negative in my views; this one is good at getting you focusing on the positive.

Have also gone through two periods whilst on this and my PMT/bloating has been much reduced, which was a very unexpected side-benefit

But I am still a newbie at this, so take that into account.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 29/06/2010 11:29

Looks interesting.

I don't think I've read a diet book for 20 years (LOL at myself reading diet books when I was a size 8 and under 8 stone!) but I'm officially fat these days. I like the idea of a book by boozy fat ladies.

McSteamy · 30/06/2010 12:08

Well I've started today - so far so good but I have an awful long way to go!

OP posts:
porcamiseria · 30/06/2010 12:42

its a rehash of the atkins diet

I'd rather eat less/move more TBH?

Tortington · 30/06/2010 12:52

it is low carbing and these things are not a one size fits all, different eating structures are helpful becuase we are all different.

i bought the book and then decided it was low carbing with cheating, so just to do it properly and get quicker results.

but it might work for you

McSteamy · 30/06/2010 13:07

It is low carbing with cheating. I tried Atkins and just found it a bit too low carb for me. This one seems a bit more gentle

OP posts:
otchayaniye · 30/06/2010 13:17

porcamiseria it IS about eating less. That's how it works, it's just the shift away from processed carbs takes you to a level where you are eating much, much smaller portions.

And you're supposed to exercise too.

You don't have to eat nothing but butter and eggs on a lower carb (no such thing as a no-carb diet) diet. You can eat really healthily and when the attack phase is over you can eat lentils, pulses, berries and the odd treat.

It can be hard to stick too, and I drink coffee and red wine on these diets and eating at others' bbqs and eating in restaurants can derail you but it's a nice way to lose a bit without feeling too hard done by, and I find it easier to kind of see the longer term with this way of eating.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/07/2010 09:37

I bought the book and I've started today. Good lord two eggs and four rashers of bacon though

It's quite an enjoyable read, and I agree with Squiffy that it's nicely posh.

Not weighed myself though as I don't have any scales - will have to use the Wii balance board tonight for that.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 05/07/2010 09:41

McSteamy how are you finding it?

Anniebee65 · 05/07/2010 12:21

I tried it once, lost shed loads, then it crept back on, then I did it again, lost weight but not as much this time. Then did it for the third time and lost nothing.

India talks about a 'golden shot', ie you only get shot at this diet. I agree with that.

Recently I lost a stone, and kept it off, by having my main meal at lunchtime and just a snack at night. It's worked and it's still working.

I also, carb free in the evenings. I find that works too.

iamamug · 05/07/2010 15:26

I have been doing this diet for a couple of months and have lost 10 pounds quite easily -I have about the same again to lose and have
been derailed a bit by Egyptian tummy which made me crave carbs! At least i didn't put weight back on due to bad tum but I am getting back to it now.
I have found it very easy and the food is lovely especially if you are used to cooking - bit difficult to do quick things and it really helps if you like omelettes!
Lovely book nicely written and i have the recipe book too which is great.
There is also a website for support and a forum - pigtotwig.com lots of help on there - Good Luck.
