at my neighbours, for using my fence post?

Neighbours moved in recently and I noticed that they had put up a washing line by wrapping the wire/cord around our fence post.

Now AIBU as I've asked DH to have a word and ask them to remove it as he always bumps into neighbour at station of a morning. DH says he will but never does. I think he thinks I'm BU...So am I?

My worry is that over the years the post will come loose by having had heavy soggy wet clothes hanging on the washing line.

We paid over £3K to have the fences put in (We own fences on both sides of our garden and its 100ft long). Which means we will have to pay for repairs.

Am I justified in telling neighbours to get their own pole for their washing line?

I have my washing line attached to a nail in one of our fence posts. It's certainly not a £3k fence but it's doing the job fine. I would imagaine that, as long as the post is cemented in, it would be fine.

Tell them you are painting the fence in varnish today so sorry, could they move the temporary washing line.

Easy.

I would ask them to stop sharing the same air as you too. Bloody cheek!

Have you thought about maybe cutting half way through the line then when a heavy load went on it would just collapse. If it happened regularly they might get a rotary airer. tee hee
Alternatively, as they are new neighbours, why not buy a rotary airer as a house-warming pressie.

Blu · 29/06/2010 18:23

If you think it will, over time, damage the fence just say 'sorry to seem really petty, but we just paid loads to have the new fence put in and they did specifically say that to make it last we shouldn't attach things that pull it sideways, like a washing line. That's why we have a post / rotary. Would you mind getting a post when you have settled in a bit?'

Decorhate · 29/06/2010 18:24

I am puzzled at this - surely the fence posts are not really high enough for a proper washing line (won't they be 6ft tall max??) won't sheets etc drag on the ground? The posts for my washing line are around 9ft tall...

Decorhate, my washing line is attached at one end to a fence post (I am not advocating what the OP's neighbour has done, btw!!), at a height of about 6 foot. When I have washing out I use a pole which extends the centre of the line to about 10 foot.

Just read this article and also have the same problem. Our fence cost 5k and the neighbours have been hammering all sorts of supports for their plants on it The points of the nails protruding through my side of the fence, which is unacceptable as we have children in the garden and dont want any accidents, not to mention damage to our fence.

I have been nice and spoken to the lady of the house and she said she would get her husband to remove them and added 'we dont want any bad feeling, its good to communicate.

I think she thinks I am stupid, because they are not screwing into the fence and threading brackets through to our side, causing pressure on the slatted panels.
I am so angry and have removed the brackets and unscrewed the screws I can get to.

Neighbourlyness has to be two sided and I strikes me they are the ones who are being un-neighbourley. Sorry my spelling of the neighbour word is incorrect but so incensed I cant be bothered to look it up.
Any advice on this one.

My fence is years old and not in the best nick. My new neighbours did the same causing a whole section to come loose . If its a concrete post id leave it , but id say something if its not.

lorrilou · 04/10/2010 13:58

Interested to know how you got on Newteacher with your fence problems and the neighbours. Did you speak to them or sabatage the washing!!
We spoke to our neighbours about banging nails, etc., into our fence but heyho as predicted they have just ignored the situation. I think I will get the weedkiller out!! No seriously, they are all for their property to look good at the expense of everyone elses so I think my hubby is going to write a letter to them recording the damage so that we can sue in future......As I it is a two way street and they are not caring about being neighbourly to us.

iliketosleep · 04/10/2010 15:10

YANBU!

When we moved into our house, I went next door and asked if it was ok if we put a birdbox on the side of their garage. They would never see it or even know it was there as the side of their garage is in my garden and the rest is fenced in but its still their garage!!

I wouldn't be pleased, be upfront tell them you paid alot of money for new fencing and don't really want it broken.

Old thread alert

I send a letter to my new neighbours asking them not to grow their plants up it because otherwise it comes down in the wind every year.
The bloke was fine about it and is generally very friendly but the woman (I don't know their relationship) blanks me.
Suits me fine Grin

conkie · 04/10/2010 15:44

My neighbour does this as well. It used to really annoy me but realised it wasn't worth the hassle of saying something as it would make me look petty.

I do make sure the excess string that hangs down is always on their side though. Makes me feel a bit better about it

overweightnoverdrawn · 04/10/2010 15:53

seriously if this is all you have to worry about you must lead a really charmed life .

BubbleBobble · 04/10/2010 15:53

Ah see, where you went wrong is paying 3K for a fence that wasn't electrified. That would have prevented the problem. Wink

Seriously, just go round and have a word if it bothers you that much.
