.....call sneezes 'blessyous'???

It's just that it's the last 'baby word' he says, and he's my youngest!

I don't encourage it exactly, and the rest of the family says 'sneeze', I just don't correct him when he says it. My heart sort of melts everytime!!

My mum is of the opinion that I should correct him, that it's a Bad Thing. He'll be made fun of at school etc.

What does the mumsnet jury think?

I think it is up to you, not anyone else.
DD2 5 calls Frazzles Flabbles. Now we all do as it is funny and cute!

Bonsoir · 25/06/2010 21:41

My DD is 5 and a half and she still thinks that breasts are called "snacks". Spot the child who was still breastfeeding when she learned to talk!

We were in the park today, and it was hot, and there were various men jogging with their torsoes exposed. DD said to me in a stage whisper "Ooh, I can see that man's snacks."

Bonsoir · 25/06/2010 21:42

Oh, and DD still says "cuggle".

PrettyCandles · 25/06/2010 21:42

Aww let him speak comfortably. He'll learn the 'proper' word soon enough, and will not be traumatised by it.

Many children (my ds1 included) begin school still using their own words or pronunciations - normal, normal, normal.

PrettyCandles · 25/06/2010 21:48

BTW my mum also had a thing about ds1 using the 'right' word for willy by the time he went to school. I stood my ground, and ds discovering that nobody else used his word was not traumatic at all, he wasn't teased, and it led to very interesting discussions between him and me and between him and dh about proper use of words, suitability of different words, offensive words, foreign languages. I think ds gained a lot by using his own word at school!

Galena · 25/06/2010 21:48

Even in Y3 they are surprisingly common - particularly if a child hurts themselves... They often say either 'I've got a baddy on my finger.' or 'I've got an owie.' From children who are usually quite articulate, it always sounds quite sweet!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 25/06/2010 21:50

we have bless you's in this house. I have no interest in changing it

sweetkitty · 25/06/2010 21:51

aww that is cute

We still call dressing gowns unicorns as that's what DD1 first called them so now in this house we wear unicorns, she knows they are dressing gowns and a unicorn is a horse with a horn but it is sweet.

julybutterfly · 25/06/2010 21:51

We have 'cuggles' too

After doing the whole blowing your eye lashes to make a wish DD now calls eyelashes 'eye wishes' which I think is cute!

I don't want to correct her!

LOL that's just reminded me she also calls Shreddies 'Freddies' and the Multigrain Shapes are called 'peoples and trees'

CheekyGirl · 25/06/2010 21:56

Phew! I really thought I probably had the oldest 'baby talker' but clearly not! I will continue to enjoy ds's blessyous (frequent recently with onset of hayfever - 'wow, that was a big blessyou, it sprayed across the room!')

It's got me remeniscing (sp?) about 'zebbials' (vegetables), 'migitz' (music), 'spebba' (zebra) and 'squeals' (squirrels).....

Dropdeadfred · 25/06/2010 22:02

My dd used to say crocagargle instead of crocodile..my dh loved it and decided to get her o say it on video.....the very day that she learnt to say it properly.. broke his heart!!
my dd2 aged 16 used to come out with corkers...'a tiger wave instead of tidal'
'guard dog for blind people'
'white as a sheep' when ill
and dixo when she couldn't say disco...now we all say it and always will..

misdee · 25/06/2010 22:05

my dd's cant say gymnastics. they gymmatchsticks

lazylula · 25/06/2010 22:06

Ds1 is 4.7 and calls still calls orange juice lela juice, no idea why. He has only recently started calling a nose a nose, before that it was a ning ning! He still refers to ambulances, police cars ect as nee naw cars, he struggled with his speech as a little one so I am just glad he now speaks!

Pingpong · 25/06/2010 22:06

YANBU
My DD is only 2 but says 'bless you' to herself when she sneezes and the other day had hiccups and kept saying 'padon me' after every one. It's just so cute and they don't stay like that for long.

DontCallMeBaby · 25/06/2010 22:07

Only this evening 6yo DD was shocked and surprised to realise that her eyebrowns are actually blonde. Actually at first she didn't think she had any - obviously spends a lot less time looking in the mirror than I do.

sungirltan · 25/06/2010 22:08

thats utterly adorable! you could explain that they are actually called sneezes, but that he can call them blessyous for as long as he likes

JaynieB · 25/06/2010 22:09

DD says 'conflection' instead of reflection and I don't correct her. It sounds sweet.

CheekyGirl · 25/06/2010 22:17

[whispers] and my dh called a chimney a 'chimbley' until he was 21 and had met me to correct him!!!!! Oh how I took the p**s!!

OP posts:
BubsMaw · 25/06/2010 22:18

Awww... this has got me reminiscing about DD learning to talk. She called water 'wuh' for such a long time, we all still do now, though she was thirsty for a couple of days at first before we had worked out what she wanted!

Dogs were 'Doddoos', bellybutton was 'bawboo', it's sweet!

piscesmoon · 25/06/2010 22:23

DH and I still use some of the toddler words. I remember just having to check with DS2 before he went to school and gently saying 'you do know that it is really........don't you?'

Boys2mam · 25/06/2010 22:24

Grandad is " Granga"

Bruises are "Boozes"

He's 6 but will be 16 in a heartbeat so these are my indulgences.

Rockbird · 25/06/2010 22:24

My 7.5yo niece still says gunction (hard g) instead of junction on the motorway. No one corrects her, it's her last baby word.

CheekyGirl · 25/06/2010 22:32

Indulgences is a lovely way to put it! You're right, they do grow up so fast. Ds is getting quite 'grown up' in a lot of other ways since starting school full time last Sept.
