I have a migraine which is getting worse fast

naratryptan hasn't helped

migraleve hasn't helped

does anyone know ANYTHING that might help?

does anyone know if I can take another naratryptan?

apologies for spuriously posting this in AIBU in a cynical attempt to get more hits

Coke - full fat
Lie down in a darkened room

No idea about the drugs as I use maxalt wafers for mine

twolittlemonkeys · 25/06/2010 19:33

My mum gets severe migraines and the only thing that works for them is Maxalt tabs which contain rizatriptan benzoate. Can you get any of those?

LittleSilver · 25/06/2010 19:34

My dr prescribe me z-something-tan (a triptan) after my other triptan was about as much use as a green smartie. But what really works for me is getting pregnant; migraines GONE (for 9 months plus however many months you bf for!!)

Umm, that may not be appropriate for you of course.

LittleSilver · 25/06/2010 19:35

Greensleeves' DH: Greensleeves may not of course want to consider this.

PersonalEnglandCoach · 25/06/2010 19:38

I have nothing but sympathy. I was shopping in this heat with a massive migraine as DP has gone fishing and I had to get food in.

I'm on sumatriptin and Pizotifin as a preventer every night.

Has cut down the amount and regularity I get them. Thank god for small graces I guess.

PrimroseCrabapple · 25/06/2010 19:40

yay - I knew this would be you. i love a graphic thread title.

cool cloth/eye mask? ibuprofen for muscles

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/06/2010 19:42

YABU, you would have more luck with a none serrated edge knife.

All my sympathies, I used to suffer from migraines until one day i realised I didnt get them anymore, very strange. But good obviously..

sweetkitty · 25/06/2010 19:48

get off the pc woman

strong painkillers and sleep in cold dark room

lou031205 · 25/06/2010 19:49

Sorry, no. I have been getting them every other day for over a month

I am now on 160mg Propanolol Slow release as a preventer & sumatriptan 50mg when I get a migraine.

I find that it is only the meds & lying down in a dark room and sleeping that has any effect.

I did hear about ice cube sucking being helpful...

lazarusb · 25/06/2010 19:50

I find throwing up helps me although I realise that is grim and may not be of much use

pantaloons · 25/06/2010 19:56

I am also always much better after a good vomit!

bentneckwine1 · 25/06/2010 20:40

dry cornflakes...no milk or sugar...don't know why it works but it does very quickly

(somebody suggested the dry cornflakes soak up the bile on the stomach)

EccentricaGallumbits · 25/06/2010 20:41

sumatriptan and retiring to a darkened room for 4 days.

NorbertDentressangle · 25/06/2010 20:46

DP suffers from cluster headaches and the only thing he's found that works is Sumatriptan (nasal spray application as its instantly effective).

SwansEatQuince · 25/06/2010 20:49

A good orgasm then two Paramol sees off a bad migraine.

MitchyInge · 25/06/2010 20:50

Have had out of hours gp out before for an injection, forget what it was, but it worked well. Bit drastic but was the worst and longest migraine in the world ever.

EccentricaGallumbits · 25/06/2010 20:51

the injectable triptan is bloody good. i'd forgotten that. can't remember which it was (becaue i felt so bad i thought i was going to die).

werewolf · 25/06/2010 20:53

Could your blood sugar be low?
If your stomach's still ok, try eating something.
Or drink some orange juice - supposed to be absorbed in 3-4 minutes.

Sympathies.

Tomatefarcie · 25/06/2010 20:59

Yes, sympathies from me too.

I haven't had one since getting pregnant with DD3, so the pregnancy tip definitely works!

(and now, watch it, I'll have the biggest motherfucker of a migraine tomorrow).

(will have to get DD4 on the way then).

totalmadness · 25/06/2010 21:06

Sleep, or atleast lying down with your eyes shut not doing anything is the only thing that ever touches mine

mrstimlovejoy · 25/06/2010 21:53

sympathies from a fellow sufferer last one i had made me cut my weekend away to london with dd and dh short.it was horrendous i felt like i wanted to put a hole in my head and let the pain out iykwim.lasted for 2 days just couldn't shift it.eventually the max dose of migraleve and gallons of water did the trick but felt out of sorts for days
hope you feel better soon

mrspir8 · 25/06/2010 21:59

My hubby suffered for years, speech problems, throwing up, massive head pain and vision loss the lot, then on a regular visit to the dentist the dentist asked him if he got headaches. He was diagnosed with something called TMJ, his jaw was misaligned and he ground his teeth in his sleep. He wore a mouth guard at night for about 2 years. The first few weeks he had a lot more regular migraines and then they stopped all together. He doesn't even need the mouth guard anymoreand hasn't had one since.

PommePoire · 25/06/2010 22:45

Nothing for now Greensleeves, I'm afraid, but when you feel better, go to your GP and ask to try a different drug from the triptan family of drugs. There are lots of different kinds and most migraine sufferers who try triptans have to endure an experimental phase before they find the one that works best for them. For example, rizatriptan, sumitriptan, naratriptan (which works really well for me; it's brand name is 'Naramig')

If I feel a migraine coming on and can catch it early enough the best way to head it off is soluble aspirin. Aspirin seems to be so unfashionable but it is a very good pain killer for the over 16s. It must be soluble though, as when you have a migraine your digestion slows right down, hence, nausea or vomiting that many people suffer.

Although, I disagree with Swans about the paracetamol (seriously? Good for you if this really works for you but I've never met a migraine sufferer for whom paracetamol works) However, she is right that an orgasm really can help! Ditto coca cola, though personally I find it usually only helps when I've already taken a Naramig and am starting to feel a bit better.

Good advice I was given is to try to go to bed and wake up (not necessarily get up, just wake up then go back to sleep) at the same time every day. I find I am more likely to get one at the weekend or on holiday and over the years have found that setting the alarm as if it was a work day seems to fool my head!

I've had hormone related or menstrual migraines for twenty years. It was tkaing over my life and utter misery. About two years ago I started having acupuncture every week at first then fortnightly. I was a total acupuncture sceptic but desperate and allowed my friend to persuade me. It took six months before I saw any real improvement and another six months more until the frequency and intensity of my attacks really dropped. I really cannot think of any other variable that would have brought on this change for the better. I have kept up the treatments (I am now on a 'maintenance' programme and only see my acupuncturist every 8 weeks or so.) I would now recommend it to anyone who has struggled with migraine.

Really hope you sleep it off and feel better for the weekend.
