Is there anyone out there who'd look forward to doing the weekly shop on their own with a 2 1/2 year old and a 12 month old?

DrivenToDistraction · 24/06/2010 14:15

I do the weekly hop on my own with said DC each week and I really don't look forward to / enjoy it. Apparently this is unreasonable

Am I, in fact, BU?

Am a SAHM if that is relevant. Off to do the shopping now, will check back later.

Shop online ?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/06/2010 14:16

No that is why I do it online.

porcamiseria · 24/06/2010 14:17

erm, buy online????? christ be kind to yourself Mrs!!!!

mumblechum · 24/06/2010 14:18

Wouldn't dream of it. That's what online shopping was invented for.

Total waste of at least two hours, driving there, parking, trailing round, hanging around at checkout, packing car, driving, unpacking - makes me exhausted to think about it even without little ones.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 24/06/2010 14:18

no, would not consider it unless desperate and no other option. |That's why I love it when Mr. Tesco knocks on my door..

MrsC2010 · 24/06/2010 14:18

Online! Even with children (first due shortly) I would never do a full shop in store anymore!

Bonsoir · 24/06/2010 14:18

I think most people with two small children would do the bulk of their shopping online.

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 24/06/2010 14:19

and if you pick your time right delivery is not much as well.

Bramshott · 24/06/2010 14:19

Who says that you're unreasonable?!

trilliAnasTra · 24/06/2010 14:19

Do it online you silly woman.

Who said you were unreasonable and in what context? Were you unreasonable to dislike it, or unreasonable to complain about it?

spookycharlotte121 · 24/06/2010 14:22

I do it with a now 2 and 3 year old in tow but have done it with them since they were born. I quite like it the dcs havae their moments but if Im quick and I take a shopping list then it usually not too bad.
IDTYBU though. If I could do it without them and browse it would be lovely!

PotPourri · 24/06/2010 14:22

Doesnt bther me much. Sometimes I am just glad to have a reason to get out. But I am a master at being quick!!!

Who says you are being unreasonable. Whoever it is, give them a big long shopping list and 2 dcs and tell them to give it a whirl - it's really fab, blah blah

CappuccinoCarrie · 24/06/2010 14:24

YUMBU, but there are ways to make it less hideous. I have kids of a similar age, I only go to the supermarket in the morning when they are in a better mood and a little more compliant. I always take food coz it pains my ds to see all the yummy stuff on the shelves and not be allowed it, so he'll have a box of raisins or grapes to munch his way through. I always show the kids the rides outside on our way in and say if they've been good (no shoving/hitting/whinging/running away) then they can have a go afterwards (one day they'll learn that those things take money and then I'll be stuffed ) so if there's any sign of misery I remind them of their 'treat' at the end. There have been times they've not been good enough for the rides which shows them I mean business. Also get the older one to help you and take the stuff off the shelves and put in the trolley for you, it'll take longer but they love being involved. Also my dd likes to trolley surf by standing on the rails at the side. Whatever works...!

Niecie · 24/06/2010 14:24

YANBU not to enjoy it or to not look forward to it. I used to do it (although my DC have a bigger gap so maybe that makes a difference) and it was a bit of a chore.

On the other hand I don't like food shopping online so I had to put up with it. Could you go less often and do bigger shops with a quick top up somewhere convenient, as and when required?

ElusiveMoose · 24/06/2010 14:25

I don't think you're BU, but personally I really enjoy my trips to the supermarket with DS (2.9). We go twice a week so it's not a massive shop. He loves putting things in the trolley and weighing the fruit and veg etc, and it's taught him SO much about food (I doubt there are many 2YOs who could correctly distinguish between coriander and flat leaf parsley ). Ok, he's not a saint, and he does run around a bit and have to be Spoken To sometimes, but generally he's very good. I've got another baby on the way in August, so we'll see if my attitude changes then, but I fully intend to keep taking them ATM.

Not trying to be sanctimonious about this - if you don't enjoy it, don't sweat it, just shop online - but if you do want to/have to keep taking them, my advice would be to try and think of it as an outing rather than something that has to be got through. I've developed various tricks to engage DS if he's getting fractious. For example, he loves letters and numbers, so I get him to read some of the words on the packets or look at the prices on the shelf edge.

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2010 14:26

I was terrified of it until DD turned 6mo
now they can both be bribed with snacks I don't mind it too much - can be quite entertaining at times (mine are 3 and 9mo)

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2010 14:28

I do a full shop but not loads of bulky things - washing powder etc, there just isn't room in the trolley
I do sometimes get to the checkout and think have to keep them entertained while I unpack and pack

runnybottom · 24/06/2010 14:31

I've got 3 small children, and while I wouldn't say I actively looked forward to it, I don't mind it at all.
I've never done an online shop and I never will.

Dlamis · 24/06/2010 14:32

I USED to look forward to it when they were younger. Ds2 would fall asleep in the baby seat and ds1 was amazingly well behaved in the toddler seat and really enjoyed it. It was almost like shopping alone.

NOW otoh is another story. Ds1 too big to go in trolley and tries to buy random miscellaneous stuff that i don't discover until we get to the checkout and ds2 will not stay in the trolley with letting the whole store know how unhappy he is about it.

So no YANBU

inmysparetime · 24/06/2010 14:34

It can be done, but it's like a military operation.
Have a list, allow younger child to hold the list while older child finds items from the list and you fill the trolley.

Pick your time, for us it was around 10am on a weekday, when nobody needs a sleep and the work crowds are gone (you can have fun playing dodgems with old people's trolleys too).

If the kids play up, leave the trolley in the middle of the shop and take kids out to calm down, then resume shopping, the trolley will still be there even if it's half an hour! if the frozen stuff is melted, stick it back in the freezer and get another

At teh checkout, reward good behaviour with fruit of choice, then present checkout operator with the peel/core to dispose of as you pay.

Do not release children from trolley until safely at the car or at the point of attaching to a buggy.

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2010 14:34

oh yes i am just getting to the pester power stage
so far buzz lightyear is the weakness

milkmoustache · 24/06/2010 14:36

DH and I take it in turns to do a HUGE shop every 6 weeks or so, first thing on Sun morning, child-free. It's not exactly enjoyable, but would never do it with the DCs in tow... Perhaps your DH could do it next time WITH the kids, and see just how much fun it is??

101damnations · 24/06/2010 14:59

I used to enjoy taking my two when they were little. There is 21 months between them, and they were never any trouble in supermarkets.I'd rather take them than dh,who buys all manner of unsuitable stuff. As they got older the only problem we had was one of them needing a wee half way around, then the other one needing one while in a checkout queue, despite being asked f they needed to go on the earlier trip.

minxofmancunia · 24/06/2010 15:13

Do it online.

I have been doing this since before dcs were born.

Supermarket shopping is drudgery.

I do go in but only to pick up bits. More than a trolley full and the laptop goes on. Do 2 big online shops a month.

The only annoying thing about is is they don't supply an unpacker.

runnybottam why don't you like the idea of shopping online? Just curious.

MumNWLondon · 24/06/2010 15:46

Why would anyone do this? Either go in evening when DC are in bed or shop online.
