Time off school for football

AIBU to be a tad annoyed that both my DD and DS's schools are closing early tomorrow so the children can go home and watch the football? Especially considering the hoops you have to jump through to take the kids out of school during term time.

Isn't it sexist where is the time off to watch the womens football team in the world cup?.

But life is very short, and this is a bit of fun.
Ought we be teaching our kids to whinge and moan about everything?
Even if your DC don't like footie, couldn't they join in the fun? or at least take advantage of a beautiful afternoon in the sunshine.

Seize the day...and all that.

My natural inclination would be to say, yes, Riven. LOL.
But I accept of course, that we can't all have days off whenever we feel like it.

But I have a very strong policy in life to always try to find the positive. If something is thrust on me - like a school closing early, I try to make the most of the situation.
I am a firm believer in looking for the silver lining.

Litchick · 23/06/2010 09:11

By the way - how is your DH's book deal coming along?

Ryoko · 23/06/2010 09:18

"is there a World Cup for women's football?"

Of course it starts in September not that you'd really hear anything about it, Germany won last year.

GypsyMoth · 23/06/2010 09:29

dd's 2.40pm interview has just been cancelled....she's 16,this would be her first job. just for the summer and to fit around 6th form.

reason it was cancelled??? because the restaurant will be too busy today!!!

really? kick off is 3pm,more like the interviewer wants to watch the game....why lie??

Brilliant.
I wouldn't worry too much. You get loads of notice and to be honest book signings are torture for evry little gain.

I find the best PR is radio interviews, a blog, writing articles etc - all can be done from home.

aristocat · 23/06/2010 09:38

ha...... my DCs school have OFSTED in today, no early finish for them

I'm betting lot of resturants will be quiet I'm counting on trains being just that but want to make sure at hotel before match is over

Litchick · 23/06/2010 09:47

defnitely.
Between me you and the gatepost - they are a complete waste of time unless you're JKR or Katy Price.

Build a plan of attack as to what DH can do from home. Blog. Twitter. Website. Interviews etc. Also if he's sci fi - there''s a huge community of on line geeks out there waiting to be tapped.
Send review copies to all the book websites etc

And radio can be done from home. The Beeb prefer you to go up to London - but when that hasn't been possible I do it all on the phone.

Think positively, girlfriend. This is the digital age - so many opportunities.

mosschops30 · 23/06/2010 09:50

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE ds to be home with me watching the footie but Im in Wales so no rules here for time off.
Am wondering whether to phone school and be honest and ask if I can have him out at 2.45pm, he'll miss 45 mins of school and he's only in reception, what do you think???

I could sky+ it but its not the same, I need to be watching it live

missseptember · 23/06/2010 09:52

Our schools not closing early. I finish at 2pm so won't affect me either way but like someone's already said, it's ridiculous at this stage. I could understand it if it was the final or even the semi-final

my kids school is putting up at big screen in the hall which kids can watch if they wish..it's being supervized by the teachers..anyone who doesnt want to watch it is being picked up at normal time..anyone who does had to send a note in saying so and can be picked up after the match..best of both worlds i think

rachel234 · 23/06/2010 12:52

YAnotBU - it is a football game. And not even a final!

Neither DD's nor DS's school have even mentioned it, so I assume I will be picking them up at the normal time.

It is definately more about the teachers!

Shodan · 23/06/2010 13:15

Ds1's school finishes at 2.50 anyway, but they're not letting anyone out early to allow for travel time.

They're putting it on the television in the hall- kids can watch there, or go home and miss some. Seems a perfect solution to me.

YANBU. It's agame, fgs. And not even a good example of 100% effort/talent/something to aspire to. I really don't see why the schools are allowed to give time off to view it.

Gah.

I hate football, especially on the television.
