Time off school for football

AIBU to be a tad annoyed that both my DD and DS's schools are closing early tomorrow so the children can go home and watch the football? Especially considering the hoops you have to jump through to take the kids out of school during term time.

DD's school is showing the first half of the match to those who want to watch it and those children can be collected later (3.45). They all have a choice. Seems eminently sensible to me - it matters a great deal to some of the children and education is surely about allowing them to share cultural events.
I remember during the 2002 world cup opening school at 6.30am so that the kids could watch the match at school rather than being late...

InvaderZim · 22/06/2010 21:17

Ours has given the option of an early pick up.

And who says that only the male teachers are interested in the match?

shockers · 22/06/2010 21:29

Ds's primary are staying late, with food and drink, to watch the match together in the hall!

kslatts · 22/06/2010 22:19

The school my dd's go to have given us the option to collect at 2.30pm.

I don't think it's just men that watch the football, so don't think the amount of male teachers makes a difference.

I will be watching it at work, we have beers in the fridge ready.

GoEngland · 22/06/2010 23:03

I want to know why my DDs school (all girls) is the only local secondary not finishing early. Is this sexual discrimination?

wombella · 22/06/2010 23:22

tv in the hall at my daughters school a good idea I think

SanctiMoanyArse · 22/06/2010 23:23

As we're in Wales not here, but I can foresee lots of debating between DH and I as to who gets to do school run (we're English)

However later this eyar we have the Ryder Cup and all cardiff schools are closing. No decision opn ours though even though we are the absolute closest. huh? Won't even be able to leave village and may well have to pull ds3 from his SNU as journey will tkae so long- DH and I have set a maximum 1 hour each way limit with traffic to do that.

That will be a nightmare!

hoppershopper · 22/06/2010 23:25

Both my DCs school have to option to collect early tomorrow, but can still finish at normal time. Naturally they want to finish early and watch the footie with grandma!

I'm not in any way interested in the football, but think its really nice for the kids to get behind their country and support England

gagamama · 22/06/2010 23:41

My DCs aren't at school yet (except DSD but tomorrow isn't our day with her) but I'd be honestly horrified if their school closed early for the football. Not only is it simply a group match for a team who haven't even won a game yet, but I find most of the England so abhorrent that I resent this blind idolisation of them and what message that sends out to our DCs.

My office is letting people leave at 3pm tomorrow for those who want to watch the match and make up the time the rest of the week. TBH I'd have much preferred to have had time off to watch the Budget this afternoon.

If it was the final or even the semi-final, I could perhaps understand it as it would be a historic sporting and cultural event. But not a poxy group match.

gagamama · 22/06/2010 23:45

That should say "most of the England team".

roundthebend4 · 23/06/2010 06:27

dd is of tomorrow anyway but im planning on travelling on train at same time as match is on so me ds3 and dd should have a nice quiet trip so no fighting for seats , except for ds3 who always guranteded one that lazy so and so brings it everwhere

Divatheshopaholic · 23/06/2010 07:19

School open at 3 as usual here. I assume some parents suggested early pick up, even watching at school but no from headmaster.Great

RustyBear · 23/06/2010 07:52

Well, at our school we have had complaints from parents who are being allowed out of work early because we are not closing early.

Schools really can't win, can they?

YANBU - I personally hate football. The obsession some people have with the game is depressing. I don't see the appeal of watching what is essentially an incredibly dull game played by a bunch of vain spit-roasting eejits.

What about families that are supporting another team? Are they allowed to take their kids of schools early when the team is playing?

StealthPolarBear · 23/06/2010 08:21

this is football!
the country has gone mad
this is just feeding the footballer / WAG hysteria

shinybootsofleather · 23/06/2010 08:28

Riven It appears that there is a special kind of hysteria reserved for football. Get everyone watching curling instead, that's what I say .

StealthPolarBear · 23/06/2010 08:32

dominos and tiddlywinks

weegiemum · 23/06/2010 08:33

So very, very glad that we are Scottish living in Scotland .....

ooh yes, but could you go somewhere else - somewhere that will be deserted & you'll have to yourself? I've been wanting to do that with each england match but they've not been at the right times so far

YABU
i think it is a good idea, let the kids have some fun, school is so serious these days,
I know that in his day ds(footie hater) would have loved the skive.
