I could be wrong but to me whatever race, nationality you are if you Live in England then should you should support your country simple as that really. All this sily talk about taxi companies advertising "100% English" is racist what a load of crap.

When in Rome and all that!

By the way I am not racist just pointing out that if you want to live in England then support your country

Are you saying that someone who is living and working here should support England? Even if they are American, French or Brazilian, for example.

If so...why?

Does that mean an English person living and working in say France or Italy should support those countries?

SacharissaCripslock · 21/06/2010 00:20

I keep deleting everything I write so I'll just stick with

justsue · 21/06/2010 00:22

No I am not sayying that at all, dont twist my words.. I am saying that if you are living and working here long term not on a visa etc and paying into the tax system (or not), living perm in England then stop assuming that when a English flag is flown it is racist thats it ..............

If for some godawful reason I had to leave here and move to England, I would not become English and therefore would not support england.

YABVU.

Angelcat666 · 21/06/2010 00:30

I wasn't twisting, I was asking because I was genuinely unsure. I also hadn't seen the other thread which made things a bit clearer.

I think, with a few exceptions, you'll find people of other nationalities/races/religions are not the slightest bit bothered about the English flying the flag (or celebrating our own religious festivals etc). It usually tends to be someone, in some position of authority, who thinks we shouldn't do this stuff just in case some one is offended when the reality is no one could care less iyswim

justsue · 21/06/2010 00:32

and that is where i was saying that yes we are a multi cultral society and we all have to accept different views etc.

Not expecting you to become ENGLISH for gods sake but if you moved to SPAIN, ITALY, INDIA, you would have to adjust to thier culture and not become Spanish, Italian, Indian but you live in thier country

Why is it so threatening and upsetting to you if people living or staying here don't support England in some sports games?! I think that says a lot more about your weak sense of identity, rather than anything bad about these other people you're on about. How does it affect you if people don't support England? What will happen if they don't? I'm British (English) and have no interest in patriotism because I don't feel the need to be better than anyone else and don't feel the need to have everyone else feel the same way as me. And I certainly don't want, much less need, everyone to be the same as me.

My brother lives in The Netherlands and supports England in the World Cup. By your logic, should he only be supporting Holland? Except it's not logic at all. Not supporting England in the World Cup doesn't mean people not born here but who live here now aren't adjusting to this culture. They are expressing their free will and their own minds. I bet you'd go mad if you lived abroad and were told you could no longer support England/Britain and had to give up every single aspect of your original national identity, wouldn't you? Well, that's what you're expecting of other people here in the UK. That level of thinking should have been left at primary school.

McSnail · 21/06/2010 06:56

What a daft OP. I'm supporting England in the World Cup, but only because Scotland didn't make it through.

HOWEVER - if Scotland HAD qualified, I would be supporting them, whether I lived in England, Venezuela or Yemen.

Again - daft OP.

haven't seen the other thread but imho your op is badly worded.

Am I right in assuming that what you actually mean is that if you live in England then you need to accept that the english will be supporting their national team and that English flags flying are not intended to cause offence to the non-english?

FranSanDisco · 21/06/2010 09:44

I don't think they should have to support England just because they live here. My parents are Irish and my DH is Scottish so I know it ain't gonna happen. However, I don't think being the smug larfing at English's atrocious performance is acceptable in my household at the moment. DH is having a marvellous time and are all his Scottish mates - oh how we larf . I hate football btw especially shit football like wot we play

RudeEnglishLady · 21/06/2010 09:52

I'm flying my host nation flags on my car, not England flags, because my neighbours think its touching and also I'm still annoyed with Ashley Cole about cheating on the lovely Cheryl! Probably pretty dumb reasons but there you go...

People should support who they feel like for whatever reason. Its a shame sport has to get so politicised.

WillowM2B · 21/06/2010 09:53

Aaargh. What with this and the other thread, and all the other weird ones over the weekend that I briefly read, I really want to swear.

But I won't

People are fucking weird.

weetabixwhiner · 21/06/2010 10:09

DSM not very complementary about our lush green land, stay there where ever you are, your'e not wanted. We support our football team 'til they get knocked out. C'mon England!

QualityTime · 21/06/2010 10:30

I live in Wales.
I work in Wales.
So does DH.
Our children are Welsh.
I pay Welsh taxes to the WA and the Welsh council.
But It'll be a cold day in hell before I support Wales over England

DSM · 21/06/2010 10:32

Not wanted?

I'm going to assume you meant that in the same lighthearted manner my post was in, rather than the potentially offensive way it could have been taken.

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/06/2010 10:36

Why should people automatically support the country they live in, if they ethincally do not have strong ties to that country.

Look at all the millions of expats living on the Spanish costas. they would no more support Spain that you would. And that is not a problem. The spanish don't care. So why should people not support who they want to in this country?

My DP lived in Germany for years - he supported england in football matches. Nobody ever cared. Nobody was jingoistic or stupid enough to suggest that he started to support Germany.

Rockbird · 21/06/2010 10:38

Wtf? I work with a chap from New Zealand who has covered his desk in NZ flags. He's not against England but his loyalty is with NZ. And that is a problem why?

Downdog · 21/06/2010 10:38

I do support England, as I live here & I (mostly) love it. But now I'm getting right behind my country of original NZ! Come on Kiwis! AS the English are playing so dreadfully, it's a double blessing having the kiwis being so exciting.

However, I am not allowed to fly an England flag at home or on car (though I would) as OH who is black English finds it offensive. He knows intellectually it's not offensive per say, but his experiences growing in in London have ingrained other feelings into his psyche & he feels otherwise. I think he is slowing coming around re the flag, but it still a matter of overcoming his life experiences.

So I just pull my head in about it. I love all the flags flying - I go down one street each day which is almost totally lined with them.

I did have German friends (in the 90's) ask about NZ'ers flying flags in their yards. Are the facists they would ask? Back then it was still very uncool to fly German flags as it was so associated with nationalism. But I think that is changing there too.

Reclaiming stuff that has been linked with oppressive behaviour takes time, so give the slow pokes a break.

flowerybeanbag · 21/06/2010 10:40

Am I missing something? Who is "assuming that when a English flag is flown it is racist"?

And why should people from other countries support England just because they happen to be living here and paying taxes here for whatever reason?

Downdog · 21/06/2010 10:41

But I would NEVER support England against the ALL BLACKS & to expect me to do so just because I live here would be VVV unreasonable.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 21/06/2010 10:55

It's a sport. It's supposed to be fun. It's rather creepy to suggest that anyone here long-term MUST support a particular sporting team; it takes it out of the spirit of fun and into the spirit of a Political Statement, which I find icky and distasteful.

Do you have strong opinions on which team people should support at lower levels -- for example that all the people who have chosen to live and work permanently in London should support their local London team rather than Manchester United?

Personally I find football incredibly dull and to the extent I think about it at all would quite like England to be knocked out early on as that reduces the extent to which people and media go on and on and on and on about the bloody football.

Morloth · 21/06/2010 10:55

We pay taxes and DS is still running about in his green and gold, sorry OP - I can't change sides now.

School drop off this morning looked like a meeting of the UN.
