To think baby fashion is stupid

Was in Asda the other day got my 6 week old a pack of 3 sleeveless sleepsuits for £2, didn't have any normal ones in his size, wondered where DF was, found him looking at over priced little T-shirt and jeans sets and baby hoodies, he said he would like to get DS a pair of jeans.

He has also looked at pairs of converse all stars for babies before.

Now there must be a market out there for this stuff or it wouldn't be there but why the hell would a baby need mini versions of adult stuff, I mean mini all stars for babies that can't even walk, 5 pocket jeans what the hell is he going to put in the pockets.

It's madness I tell you, am I alone in thinking a baby can stay in sleepsuits/vests + hats and socks until they are walking.

Personally I'm a sucker for cute little baby clothes. Don't get me wrong I think they look lovely and sweet in sleepsuits but i couldn't resist buying lovely little outfits with matching shoes (not big hard things - but booties or pram shoes).

Fair enough to keep your 6 week old in sleep suits but I think you'll be a bit sick of them by the time he's walking. An older baby (after about 5 months) does look like they are wearing pyjamas in a sleepsuit and they often aren't tough enough to deal with crawling. My 1 year old wears jeans and I think they look appropriate. Never never would have occurred to me to get fussed about pockets.

Oh and now DS has left babyhood way behind him, I love, love, love shopping for little outfits for friends' babies

stressheaderic · 18/06/2010 12:52

My 4 month old DD mainly wears leggings and t-shirts - still baby-cute but a little more appropriate for her age than babygros, which she wears for bed (only in plain white, but that's another thread!).
Hate hate hate trainers on babies.

Saw a fb friend's pics recently of her very tiny son in jeans, trainers, a shirt and a leather flying jacket, wtf?

Firawla · 18/06/2010 12:56

whoever said its wasteful cos they grow out of it in 0-3 months, that can be said for anything whether jeans or a babysleeping suit, unless you just put them in the same couple of suits the whole time (would you not get bored though?) when they grow out of it pass it on, use it for your next baby, give to charity.. its only a waste if you throw it in the bin/landfill (which obviously is out of order wasteful and ruining environment)

a baby can stay in sleepsuits/vests + hats and socks until they are walking.

Walking, in our case, was 15 months. By which time she was a sturdy tallish toddler-looking person with a vocabulary. She'd have looked very odd out and about in a sleepsuit.

I do agree about shoes. Mine never wore a pair, ever, until she was walking strongly. And even then it took me a couple of weeks to get her used to the idea, so she was 16 months before she wore shoes.

But I think that, while I agree entirely for a newborn, by the time yours is 6 months or so you'll feel like tops and pants are appropriate. In our case we graduated to soft cotton pants/leggings and t-shirts at 4 months, jeans (not pocketed, but what difference does it make?) at 6-7 months, and once she was walking I put her in dresses and skirts occasionally - when she was crawling I felt it hampered her.

So yes, generally, I agree, but I think you're underestimating how big and personlike they are by the time they walk.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 18/06/2010 13:06

Sorry, that first line was supposed to be in quotes.

twolittlemonkeys · 18/06/2010 13:09

YANBU - jeans etc look ridiculous and uncomfortable on babies. My 2 looked so much happier in soft clothes like sleepsuits etc.

sweetkitty · 18/06/2010 13:11

DS is 6 weeks and is in rompers during the day, shortsleeved and legged sleepsuits and a vest at night as it is so hot just now.

I do see sleepsuits more as PJs but I like soft dungaree type outfits for the daytime, I hate tops that are always riding up round their backs and necks.

DS has been given 7 pairs of shoes as presents though, 7 pairs!!??? for a baby

Ryoko · 18/06/2010 13:22

The difference the pockets make is that they are not needed, they are trying to make them look like adult jeans and I'm sure it makes them more money.

It's a strange thing that boys get adult jeans and hoodies when baby girls dresses are not ment to look like ladies dresses if you see what I mean.

Ryoko - they can charge more possibly because it's more embellished, same with embroidery or other kinds of detailing. It's not a conspiracy though, you don't have to buy them! The plainer the item the less it costs to make.

And I think that boys get minature adult clothes and girls get traditional baby clothes, because up until comparitively recently little boys wore dresses for the first little while, which is not the norm anymore, so there isn't a traditional outfit for baby boys to wear IYSWIM. Also, many women's dresses are designed to be sexy, with short skirts, low necklines, figure huging etc etc (or all three) which is inappropriate for a baby while jeans don't hae those connotations.

YADNBU!!

ChangingItUp · 11/01/2015 18:09

YANBU. I was looking after my DN's last week, toddler age. Both been in skinny jeans from the day dot. Both have chronic eczema behind their knees, go figure.

slightlyglitterstained · 11/01/2015 18:16

What really annoyed me was shopping for clothes for me and my baby boy and discovering that he got better pockets on his clothes than I do! TBH up until 2 they really don't need and can't use pockets, and they tend to get rucked up into annoying uncomfortable lumps.

DS wore sleepsuits in the daytime (some outfits too) till 9 months or so, because I didn't realise there was a rule Grin

paxtecum · 11/01/2015 18:57

I went to a Christening where the 3 month old baby boy wore a beige linen suit ( styled like a man's), a shirt and tie. The baby looked like a miniature Charlie Drake.

wheresthelight · 11/01/2015 19:03

yabu each time their own

dd left hospital in jeggings and a t shirt, she has sleepsuits for bed and clothes for day. that is my choice to make. personally I wouldn't leave tge house in my pj's so I don't see why it's ok for my baby.

weaselsquirrel · 11/01/2015 19:03

I've dressed all 4 of my children very traditional. The three boys all had smocked romper suits and hand knitted cardigans with bonnets, or fine knit romper suits or sailor suits. (sarah louise/pretty originals/pex/couche tot etc) my daughter wore smocked dresses with knitted cardigans and bonnets. The boys only ever wore white or pale blue. So they looked like babies from the 50s Grin I also used coach built prams.
I'm not a fan of jeans or trainers but I don't care how others dress their children.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 11/01/2015 19:12

All of mine have been in either baby grows or rompers with or without jumpers or cardi's up until about 18 months and none of them have ever looked odd

Murphy29 · 11/01/2015 19:12

Yabu. DS was a tiny preemie so was in sleepsuits during the day for longer than I'd have liked and I was bored by them. It didn't help that preemie clothes were only white or pale blue, we were in desperate need of colour!

From 8 weeks or so (as soon as they would fit) he's worn outfits during the day and looks very cute. Really not a fan of the overly baby items especially now he's bigger.

CorporateRockWhore · 11/01/2015 19:14

Say what you like, but the pockets on baby jeans are the perfect size for ten fags and a lighter.

Annunziata · 11/01/2015 19:17

I think baby clothes are adorable!
