to think that the amounymt of junk food in the supermarkets is f*cking RIDICULOUS

whole AISLES dedicated to sweets, chocolate, crisps, cakes, biscuits etc!!! is sthere something wrong here or is it just me?

no wonder half the country's fat if every time we go shopping we're bombarded with all this. packaging is often designed to be most appealing to children, too.

there's an argument that supermarkets promote this food as unlike say, a potato, these foods do not go off quickly. so it is more profitable for them.

i am not a food nazi, i like chocolate etc as much as anyone else, i just think the choice on display is ridiculous and we all as a country probably eat too much of it.

there's a very good argument that says that if you want cake or something, you should make it yourself. that way you can see what goes into it (and no additives or preservatives) but because of the hassle involved it really will be a treat. i might try it.

oh, and nefore anyone flames me over using the word "junk" food, yes i do believe that the kind of preservative filled crisps etc you find at the supermarket are junk food, almost no nutritional value, unlikely to fill even the smallest
child up, abd the packaging will be thrown away and fester away in the earth, certainly not biodegradable.

i do feed my child crisps btw, but the
slightly healthier "baked" ones, and i am certainly not
judging anyone, feed your child anything you damn well please i just dont think we should have such a surfeit of crap in the supermarket!

ps i bought some light mayonnaise yesterday, it had a little sticker on it saying it was a good source of omega 3 and 6. MAYONNAISE!!! you have to be f*cking kidding me. these food companies are all damn immoral liars.

Goodness me! I was in Tesco tonight and they have adverts saying that their ready-meals only contain the stuff that you would find in your own kitchen. No more di-tri-glyceride of mono-sodium-whatsit. I checked out a couple of packets and it appears to be true.

I presume that there is other stuff going on that they are not telling us (like it contains too much fat or salt) but getting rid of icky preservatives etc is a start.

moondog · 17/06/2010 00:01

Tis true.
WTF is the point of making a big song and dance about reducing use of plastic bags, only to present you with stuff that is smothered in plastic.

Que????

LynetteScavo · 17/06/2010 00:04

Don't eggs have Omega 3 in them? Or is that only certain eggs from chickens who have been fed on fish?

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:05

hmmm you know what moondog - I like that idea.......I think may have to do it myself.....epsecially given I missed the bin collection today and so am going to end up with 2 weeks worth of rubbish bagged up out the front of my house............

moondog · 17/06/2010 00:13

Toccata..are you who I think you are?
Three ds's, church going ..where you have a job?
Has been bugging me.

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:16

I want to meet moondog. She walks the walk.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:16

yes I am

moondog · 17/06/2010 00:19

Hehe Expat.I do my best.
Toc, wondering where you were!
Have you guys split up again?
Last I heard you gto together again then he became ill.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:23

yes we split before Christmas, I moved out beginning of march.

I was prepared to stand by him despite what happened with him being ill (you do know what happened in September don't you?) But as he started to get better it became apparent that he didn't actually want to be back together - it was him being ill that made him think that.

So it's over, for good, this time. Which reminds me I must fill in the bits on the divorce petition whatsit and get it sent back. We've agreed all the details, I'm not contesting anything in it (don't ask why he's divorcing me and not the other way round ) so it should be pretty straight froward and quick.

On to pastures new

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:23

toc's another one i want to meet because she walks the walk, too.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:25

haha expat - >

same here - not long until I'm up in Auld Reekie

moondog · 17/06/2010 00:26

Isn't she just?
I am sorry.
I know your family has been through some really tough times.Hmm, not sure what he did, was it attacking you or something (was that to do with his illness or was it something else.

How are your boys?
Are you still pressing on with OU stuff.
Made up with family?Still smoking rollies?

God, I sound like weirdy stalker.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:32

don't be sorry, we tried again (under false beliefs it transpires but hey ho) it didn't work. Can't say I never tried.

Yes - that's right about the attacking me- I was under a different name at the time so wasn't sure if you clocked it was me. Psychotic episode and nearly killed me. He's an arse for getting himself into the position where he ended up ill enough to do that, but we all do stupid things at one time or another, I doubt he had any idea that things would turn out like that. And he's an arse about other stuff too, but on the whole he's not actually a bad guy. "we" just didn't work any more.

Boys are fab thanks, getting so big

Had to take a break from my OU this year. started a course in Feb, but then the dreaded depression hit me again, and I'm suffering from (thankfully mild) panic attacks linked back to september, and the course I was doing was just too close to home (was "Working with Families and Children") in the content for me to do it. Going to pick it up again next year. Just taking some time out from the studying to get my head sorted properly.

Made up with family - nah. Arses the lot of them - they started calling regularly when we got back together, since I moved out hardly a word from them again.

Still smoking the rollies.

and no you don't sound like a stalker, you're often a bit blunt but you've been on a lot of my threads over the years supporting and advising

moondog · 17/06/2010 00:35

I am v nice in RL.
My more aggressive alter ego unleashed on MN.
Yopu sound bouncy and resilient so that is good.
I'll keep an eye out for you know I 'konw' who you really are.
God woman, you are hard to keep up with! I can recall at least 4 different names.

Off to bed now.
Good night.

Tough Times R Us.

Toc, well, she's lived in Zim. Expat lived in assorted Latin American holes, and, not having learned her lesson, spent early adulthood patronising intestinal diseases .

I take a leaf out of Kingfisher's 'The Poisonwood Bible's Rachael, elbows in and feet up, let's ride this wave, try not to drown, and see where we end up.

It might be some place that is shite, in which case, let's move on. But in any case, it may be, that entertaining the unexpected is the same an enlightenment.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:39

lol @ your aggresive alter ego unleashed on here

yeah - the "happy pills" (ads) have brought back some of the bounce. It comes and goes, but thankfully here more often than not.

Just the darned panic attack things and replaying stuff that needs sorting now.

only 4 names - blimey you've missed a lot then

night

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:39

I believe that 100%, moony.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:42

you couldn't make our lives up could you expat

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:48

I honestly don't think it would even occur to the writers of books to do so, toc.

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:49

'So, how did you end up here?'

'How says this is the end?'

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 00:51

just think of the money we could make if we sold our stories LOL

expatinscotland · 17/06/2010 00:52

I can back up every single one of those stories, with names changes to protect the innocent.

toccatanfudge · 17/06/2010 01:03

yup - me too - mad isn't it

Rollmops · 17/06/2010 08:54

YANBU, obviously. However, junk food is highly addictive hence highly saleable.
Iz all about money....
We all are mere pound signs to junk conglomerates, we are...

I grew up abroad. I remember queuing at the dairy 'depot' place with my mum for milk and yoghurt. It certainly wasn;t overpackaged - it was unpackaged. Everyone brought their own 5l glass jars. Everyone swapping tips about which grocery shop was due a delivery of fresh vegetables. The relentless picking, drying and preserving over summer to tide you over winter.

I understand where the OP is coming from, but I do appreciate the way that supermarkets make my life as a home-maker much easier. I know how to do my local shop (only go down about 1/5 of the aisles - generally get it delivered anyway) - and I still love the choice and the reliability.
