My DS went to ILs yesterday with DH.

When they came home DS was saying something about a butterfly and DH said his mum has a bowl of glass beads with some glass animals in that she lets DS play with. I asked him if he was watching him and he said no as his mum and step dad were.

IMO, even if he is being watched, I don't think it is an appropriate thing to play with. My nan agreed but am I over reacting seeing as they were watching him?

i think it is fine with supervision
what are you worried could happen?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/06/2010 18:47

As long as he was being watched I think it's fine. Good for teaching him to be gentle!

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2010 18:48

i wouldn't have a problem with it as long as he was supervised tbh

poppy34 · 14/06/2010 18:48

With supervision I would be fine with this

TrinityTrinityTrinity · 14/06/2010 18:49

no prob if someone was with him

Hassled · 14/06/2010 18:49

I assume you're thinking choking hazard? Or that he's get cut on the glass? As long as he was being watched, I'd say that was fine. You can't always remove every risk.

LynetteScavo · 14/06/2010 18:49

Sounds OK, as long as someone was with him.

Pozzled · 14/06/2010 18:50

I also agree that I'd be ok with it if supervised.

nagoo · 14/06/2010 18:51

You are indeed over-reacting

It is fine as long as he is being supervised. I thought you were going to say a dildo or something!

SaliMali1 · 14/06/2010 18:51

Children also need to handle breakable thiongs within reason so that they can learn to be careful,
learn how to handle things etc.

DetectivePotato · 14/06/2010 18:52

I was thinking of a choking hazard or if any of the glass broke. I'm very surprised at the amount of people that think glass is ok to play with. Toys are not made of glass, therefore I didn't really think it was appropriate.

Yes, fine with supervision.

toccatanfudge · 14/06/2010 18:52

agree with the rest

DetectivePotato · 14/06/2010 18:52

"I thought you were going to say a dildo or something"

PMSL, I wouldn't have even asked the question!

but toys are designed so that children can be 100% safe playing with them by themselves.

if he is being carefully supervised then glass isn't going to hurt him is it?
in fact, it teaches him that some things must be treated very carefully, which is a good thing

toccatanfudge · 14/06/2010 18:57

DS3 (just turned 3) has been drinking juice out of a proper glass tumbler for ages now, under supervision.

And I let him out to play in the garden (all gravelled over) as well and he now knows not to try and eat the stones.

pointydog · 14/06/2010 19:08

fine with supervision

chipmonkey · 14/06/2010 19:09

I am going to be the voice of dissent here and say that YANBU. A child could get a glass bead down his/her throat in a matter of seconds even when being watched and could choke very quickly.

DetectivePotato · 14/06/2010 19:10

chipmonkey That was my thoughts exactly. It takes a second. Plus FIL has parkinsons and doesn't have the fastest reactions.

but chip - a child playing in a garden/park being closely supervised could get a small stone stuck down their throat in a matter of seconds too.......

DetectivePotato · 14/06/2010 19:10

Glass slides a lot easier.
