I just watched the top 40 on viva tv and was absolutely shocked at the sexual content of a large majority of the videos. I am by no means a prude but the Rhianna video tia amo was really truly inappropriate for day time viewing. The girls in it are really hot but my 9 year old who sings this song would be really embarassed to watch this video. Another one was by Kesha singing " send me a dirty picture " THe Kylie video had a mountain of people in a sort of orgy. I feel like crying what the hell has happened !

I don't want other kids to watch taht shit either though.

It is corrupting. It is grooming young people to accept a vision of sexual relationships which is mysogynist, sexist and pretty damned vile. And if everyone in my DC's generation accepts that vision and sees it as normal, that's going to affect my DC's adversely.

It's not just a question of turning it off yourself - we need to get it out of the mainstream.

But surely these music channels run on advertising money? So if no one watched the channels then they would have no advertising, and therefore no need to have videos, I am showing my disgust by changing channels!

Ah well, we're nto the target audience...

Yes, totally agree re misogynistic - and yet it's in the guise of being "liberated" enough to writh semi-naked... Not sure how we came to this. It seems like this "culture" is at one extreme, and the burkha is at the other. What happened to middle ground?

YANBU
I have been really shocked by these videos and would back it being added to the mumsnet campaign

KorkiiEffenkrakers · 11/06/2010 21:04

YANBU - happy to add my voice to a campaign too.

auntpolly · 11/06/2010 21:07

YANBU and I completely agree. I really worry about this now I have an impressionable DD. It also concerns me that the media elevate some celebs to second coming status purely because they have a pretty face.

Since we're on the subject of the hit parade though... I love music videos and there are some really good ones out there these days that aren't soft porn. Check out these and keep the faith (Diane Birch, LCD soundsystem...) www.bugvideos.co.uk/blog/bug-19-all-the-videos.go

And let us all pray for children who are into 'alternative' music!
