to think that models in ads for mascara should not wear eyelash extensions?

Every single ad for mascara in every single magazine I look at seems to sport a model who clearly has eyelash extensions or enhancements. Some of them you can easily see the place where they are bonded, or start.

Is it just me that feels if you are advertising a product that is supposed to define and enhance your eyelashes, then you should show what that product can do by using it in the ad?

To put eyelash extensions on (which you can't use waterproof mascara with anyway) is just a form of false advertising dont you reckon?

AIBU?

Disclaimer: I realise this is not going to have a major impact on society as a whole, and no, its not the ONLY thing I have to worry about, before anyone says it

Jamie - I know, that's the quick makeup!?

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/06/2010 11:37

Was buying some make up from Lancome the other day (their foundation is brilliant, I have tried 'em all) and the woman tried to sell me some anti ageing serum called Genifique. Apparently it has the power to enter your skin cells and alter the DNA to remove those pesky wrinkle causing properties. I asked if Lancome had won the Nobel prize for this ground breaking and headline causing scientific breakthrough (I didn't really say that, but I did in my head)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 11:37

I feel like a complete makeup novice - if I go out with lipstick on I feel like a little girl dressing up (I am 40)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 11:38

GetOrf - 'gwan, say it next time

potplant · 11/06/2010 11:42

YANBU - this annoys me a lot more than it should do - its mascara ffs!

I too hate those ads that say 85% of women think we're fab - er don't you mean 85% of the 20 women you paid to take the trial?

grrrr.....

(love the link to the Madonna thing!)

TrillianAstra · 11/06/2010 11:47

85% of women who you gave free makeup think you're fab!

Kaloki · 11/06/2010 11:50

There's an anti-wrinkle cream that whenever my brother sees the advert he calls it polyfilla.

Those adverts are a load of bullshit. I think they should say which brand of false eyelashes they use, we could buy those instead.

Kariba29 · 11/06/2010 11:52

YADNBU it really annoys me too even though i know i shouldnt really care, but whats the point of advertising something that is obviously not good on its own but has to be enhanced to make it more appealing

same with the advert for L'Oreal with an over 65 actress banging on about how the face cream makes her look so much younger than her years when its a well known secret that she has had every nip and tuck going on her face ahh it really sends up a totally warped message

ItalyLovingMummy · 11/06/2010 12:04

So glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed with all the bllcks re beauty ads! Like someone else said, what is the point advertising a volumising shampoo or whatever when said model has hair extensions. The women in the ads don't exactly need false eyelashes etc so why bother? With regards to models and airbrushing, why can't mags show models that are a variety of shapes and sizes because thats just how women are in reality. Some women are naturally very thin, some are slender, some are hourglass, some athletic - why not a mix like that?

thumbwitch · 11/06/2010 12:44

the ones that really annoy me more are the shampoos that claim to contain amino acids, to "mend" your damaged hair. SHITE! Hair is dead, there is NO WAY amino acids can be re-incorporated into the keratin protein. All that hair shaft smoothing in the pics - that's just some kind of glue. I tried that Fructis stuff for glossy hair when I was young and naive and my god it made my hair sticky! Luckily a friend said she liked the stuff and took it off my hands (I hate throwing full bottles away but wasn't ever going to use it again).

YANBU. Puts me off buying the product TBH.

tethersend · 11/06/2010 13:13

Sometimes they go too far...

tethersend · 11/06/2010 13:13

Arf

potplant · 11/06/2010 13:50

Meglet - sadly it doesn't put me off buying the products. I know its all a load of crap but I still can't help myself when I get into Boots. I'm an ad man's dream!

Stretch · 11/06/2010 13:51

Ok, maybe I'm being dumb, but what is wrong with the first link tethersend??

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 13:58

^thether6 - is that shadow one real ? - that's amazing. Itf it is real, then I'm actually shocked how much they've altered it. We should blardy well not stand for it.

Stretch - presumably, models limbs are not that freakishly long?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 13:58

sorry - my typing has gone all to cock

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 13:59

... and legs have been slimmed down considerably, I'd say

tethersend · 11/06/2010 14:04

Look at it for a while stretch, and try and imagine her proportions if she stood up

Jamie, it's real in that the photo editor fucked up and forgot to slim the shadow down too!

potplant · 11/06/2010 14:05

Stretch - the leg she is leaning on is freakishly long, the other one looks half the length.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 11/06/2010 14:06

I think I might have nightmares - now I've looked long and hard at Mummy Long Legs lady

tethersend · 11/06/2010 14:34

Brace yourself, jamie

olderandwider · 11/06/2010 14:49

The amount of Photoshopping is preposterous these days. It not only means products over-promise, it is giving all our teenagers inferiority complexes too. They don't see how fake it all is - perfect skin, tiny waists, huge tits, long slender legs. It's a massive con to make women feel ugly and imperfect and shell out silly money for stuff that won't work .

ImSoNotTelling · 11/06/2010 14:49

trillian thanks for that link, I find it fascinating watching other women do their makeup!
