to find my lo had another baby's dummy in at nursery?

Hmm, picked up my 11 month old at nursery and she had another baby's dummy in her mouth.

I'm assuming she picked it up and put it in her mouth herself, but shouldn't the staff be on the floor watching the babies and saying 'that's not your dummy' etc....

I find it gross!

PS This is on top of her bottle being mixed up with another baby's a couple of weeks ago.......

Do you expect them to guard every single piece of equipment then in case of cross contamination? Because babies put everything in their mouths, not just dummies

SacharissaCripslock · 09/06/2010 18:20

At 11 months she's probably licking the wheels of her buggy (or was that just mine?!) so I wouldn't worry about the germs from another child's dummy. I would think it's hard to keep track of who owns which dummy tbh.

littlestarschildminding · 09/06/2010 18:20

Not ideal....but Im sure no long term damage was done. When they crawl they put alsorts in their mouth mine certainly got hold of far worse than another childs dummy. Helps build up a healthy immune system and that!!!

SloanyPony · 09/06/2010 18:20

Its a little lax but to be honest it must happen. The bottle thing is worse than the dummy though as she could well have picked it up herself, turn your back for one second, etc.

The bottle thing is potentially a worry if you provide filled bottles - I'm thinking someone with a milk allergy etc...unlikely but didn't a baby die at a day nursery due to that?

SloanyPony · 09/06/2010 18:22

If you are talking about water beaker though, I'd chill.

prozacfairy · 09/06/2010 18:23

If baby was 4 months old I could sort of see your point but at 11 months they are into everything my DD has been known to lick the floor at that age nah I wouldnt get worked up about the dummy thing myself.

IMoveTheStars · 09/06/2010 18:23

YABU to worry about it, haven't you had friends children round that have a drink from another child's cup/bottle, or accidentally put in a dummy that isn't theirs?

It's really not a big deal

MrsRhettButler · 09/06/2010 18:23

ummm, get her one of those things that clips the dummy to her clothing...

withorwithoutyou · 09/06/2010 18:25

That's just one of the hazards of having a dummy imo.

diamondsandtiaras · 09/06/2010 18:36

agree that bottle could turn into a serious issue if it was full of milk or whatever..........that would definitely be lax on the nursery's part. Dummies on the other hand........so many LOs have them that I can't see how the staff could possibly police it all the time. Does the dummy even have your child's name on it? If not, how would they possibly remember which one belonged to which child?

lazylula · 09/06/2010 18:42

Ds2 took a dummy off of a little girl at a tots group yesterday and put it straight in his own mouth. This happened with him sat next to me and the little girl was sat on her child minders knee, even more confusing is the fact that ds doesn't even have a dummy! I think that you are being unreasonable about the dummy, but I would be cross about the bottle!

Morloth · 09/06/2010 18:45

Happens.

MumNWLondon · 09/06/2010 18:46

Sorry its just one of the hazards of having a dummy. Would be worried at 3-4 months when you sterilise everything but at 11 months when they are crawling and putting things in their mouths off the floor would not be worried.

With bottled they'd be more careful as each baby probably has different brands of formula etc. That being said once DS's bottle was given by mistake to another baby with the same name... it was aptamil and the other mum was very laid back about it.

waitingforbedtime · 09/06/2010 18:47

My ds licked and chewed everything at that stage. Dummmies are relatively unhygenic anyways.

IMoveTheStars · 09/06/2010 19:43

Just wait til he drops it in a muddy puddle, picks it up and shoves it back in his mouth before you can even bend down

onepieceoflollipop · 09/06/2010 19:46

Are the bottles/dummies labelled? If not then what hope do the nursery staff have.

Tbh, even if labelled I wouldn't worry too much re a dummy.

Ime if you complain about fairly minor things (I don't know if you said anything to the staff regarding this) then less notice is taken when you really need to complain about something more serious.

I had this at the hospital when DD was born.

They had took her off me for the night and in the morning she came back with someone elses dummy. Knew the dummy was someone elses because it had a nametag attached to it.

Unfortunately DD didn't have a nametag on her, must have fell off somewhere, so the Midwife looked all worried and said 'are you confident this is your child?'

Luckily I was confident.

TubbyDuffs · 09/06/2010 20:05

At 11 months, they have had plenty of their necessary jabs and a few germs aren't that bad!

TBH if the dummy was clearly labelled I would be a bit peed off, but can you really expect the staff to remember each and every child's dummy? Really????

Hulababy · 09/06/2010 20:08

I wouldn't worry about it. At 11m they are putting pretty much everything in their mouth anyway - and most of it is stuff that is less hygenic that another little one's dummy.

BalloonSlayer · 09/06/2010 20:13

Well OP, as the mum of a DS anaphylactic to milk who would have been in hospital if he'd started drinking anyone else's milk (or possibly sucking on their dummy although he never had one himself) I will say YANBU.

I often got looked at as if I was very precious when I said I couldn't put him in nursery/creche when very young in case something like that happened...

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 09/06/2010 20:15

YABU - my 10mos puts anything in his mouth he can get his hands on - including his brother's feet [boak] - not sterilised as far as I know.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 09/06/2010 20:16

At 11 months old mine had already sampled cat litter (clean!) cat food, slugs and snails, so I can safely say they can cope with more than someone else's dummy.

The little buggers are fast! grab to gob in 0.00000000003 seconds!

TubbyDuffs · 09/06/2010 20:27

OMG BalloonSlayer, I honestly never even thought about allergies.... puts a whole new perspective on this thread!

Obviously, if your child had known allergies, you would have every right to be really seriously peed off!
