Pay at Pump... Why don't people use these?

I can understand that some people want to pay with cash and some people want to buy something from inside the shop but why oh why are there some people who just hold everything up by going in to pay with a card when they could do it all at the pump?

Am I being unreasonable to think these people are weird?

Some people can't cope with the technology. It is exactly like the thread on self-service tills in Tesco. Nice idea, but if you have certain disabilities, you really appreciate interacting with a person, not a load of numbers and details.

I find them hard to use. But I do hate being held up at pumps - I think once you have paid, you get straight back in the car and if you want to re-set the radio or do your hair, you drive to the parking space out of the way of the pumps. And if you don't I will honk you cos you're being a twat.

I hate being stuck at the pump after paying in the kiosk because someone in front of me is still in the shop.

The best method of paying for fuel I've seen is at an Asda filling station in Dundee where you fill up your car then drive to one of several kiosks (a bit like toll booths or drive through McDonalds) to pay the cashier. You can't get out until you've paid. No hold ups and everyone keeps moving.

I don't know why all petrol stations aren't like this.

"i wonder why the UK does not adopt the same service that is used in the rest of Europe, where every petrol station has a pump attendant?

they fill the car, you pay them with card or cash and drive off. simple! "

Where in Europe are you talking about, Elenio?

I thought this was standard practice throughout Europe? am i wrong??
i am sure i remember it in France,Italy, Switzerland and Greece!
apologies if i am wrong though!
still seems a better system though. No job loss and no-one needs to get out of their cars!

GOD KNOWS IT FECKS ME OFF

AhLaVache · 08/06/2010 20:53

Possibly Nanbullen, possibly.

I'd still rather not see them manipulated out of their jobs though. Not exactly my definition of harridan but hey ho...

AhLaVache · 08/06/2010 20:58

....but no, they do it because they are told to. Because it is cheaper for the banks if their customers use a machine rather than a member of staff.

Is it my general point re automation that irked you or just my use of muppet? If it was the latter I can assure you it was tongue-in-cheek. My point is I WANT to deal with a real life person, hardly villainous is it?

I've started using the pay at pump only pumps at tesco, as they are always empty when all the other pumps have long queues.
Find them much better, can fill up to £99 worth (not that it helps me, i never have the £40 to fill my tank right up) and you don't have to worry about dragging the DC's across the forecourt to go and pay

leavingonajetplane · 08/06/2010 21:20

YABU - it would deprive everyone of the but-what-about-petrol-stations facet of the riveting "kids left in car" threads.

I've found pay at pump at Shell is always out of order - you only find this out after having inserted your card and fiddled around thus wasting even more time. Pay at pump Asda always seems to work, probably because it's the only option for those pumps that have it on.

lozster · 08/06/2010 21:32

... if you'd like some personal service go to Oregon - it's illegal to pump your own gas there!

allbie · 08/06/2010 22:17

Couldn't get my card out of pump once, put me right off them.Had to go to the kiosk and get help. It took ages...much faster going in to pay after that experience!
