Pay at Pump... Why don't people use these?

DuelingFanjo · 08/06/2010 10:22

I can understand that some people want to pay with cash and some people want to buy something from inside the shop but why oh why are there some people who just hold everything up by going in to pay with a card when they could do it all at the pump?

Am I being unreasonable to think these people are weird?

Don't tell everyone how fabt hey are, i might hvae to start queueing

BuzzingNoise · 08/06/2010 11:20

They never accept the type of card I have.

DuelingFanjo · 08/06/2010 11:27

LoveBeing34 the problem I find is when you're behind someone who's joined a long queue of people in the kiosk trying to pay and can't get out even though you've filled up and paid at the pump already! Drives me mad!

Also, surely paying at pumps gets rid of that 'will my car explode with the kids in the back' worry

The one i use has a seperate line that is only pay at pump, but i know the ones you mean and is the reason i don't use it

UniS · 08/06/2010 11:30

because last time I did pay at pump my card was charged 3 times. I object to that level of over charging.

SPBHatesFootball · 08/06/2010 12:01

ooh yes those vouchers
but yes, you swipe your club card

emptyshell · 08/06/2010 12:18

5p off petrol vouchers... plus if I've got some plonker in a flash car tutting and pointedly watching his watch behind me I'll go in and pay just to wind them up if they're aggravating me (those guys who expect you to get filled up and warp out in 10 seconds flat).

ClaireDeLoon · 08/06/2010 12:22

I don't use them for the same reason as a few posters have mentioned, have a 70 litre tank and want to be able to completely fill it up, it cost £80+ today and that is above the pay at pump limit.

islandofsodor · 08/06/2010 12:23

My company Allstar fuel card doesn't work at them.

And ds's car takes more than the £60 limit plus he needs a VAT receipt.

And I almost always buy some chocolate.

diamondsandtiaras · 08/06/2010 12:30

we don't have any pay at the pump garages near us (birmingam) If we did, I'd use it!

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 08/06/2010 13:24

I refuse to use them on principle, as I do the self service options in banks etc. The more people who use pay at the pump means the fewer peple will be needed to work @ the pertol station - so you're contributing to higher iunemployment ultimately.

Same for the customer service managers/floor walkers in banks, who encourage me to use self service options "Well I can noddy no brains, but if I do and all your other customers do, what are you going to be doing in a few months time?" The concept they are encouraging people to do their job thus making themself surplus to requirements seems to occur to them.

Rant over - sorry

Glitterandglue · 08/06/2010 13:25

My reason is pretty much always that I want to pay with cash [can't stand using my card] but on the three occasions I ever tried it [because I had to - it was night and the kiosk was shut] the pump refused to scan my Tesco clubcard. It wasn't the same one each time, either. I want those points, dammit! So on another occasion when I had to pay by card [no cash on me] I still went inside so I could actually get my clubcard scanned.

diamondsandtiaras, I'm from Birmingham. Tesco garages have Pay At Pump, or at least the ones I've been to.

Crazycatlady · 08/06/2010 13:44

Tesco fuel ruins your engine, but that's another thread...

AhLaVache · 08/06/2010 13:55

Because I dont want to live in an automated world.
I want the petrol station cashiers to keep their jobs.
Our world is populated by perfectly capable human beings, I dont want employees to have to compete for their jobs with machines cos they dont require a lunch break or annual leave etc.
Big companies make plenty of money out of us - I want that money to provide employment, not more automation that lines their pockets even more.

ActuallyMyNamesMarina · 08/06/2010 14:27

ALaVache - much better put than I did - I agree, it's nice to interact with real people (yes there is some real irony in posting that on an internet forum)

AhLaVache · 08/06/2010 14:31

No you put it very well Marina.
I always think that in the bank too, I want to say "stop agreeing to do this you muppet - your bosses telling you to encourage customers to use self service dont give a stuff about you and your job, tell them to shove it!"

I dont though, obviously

thumbwitch · 08/06/2010 14:36

I love pay at the pump - used it whenever possible. They are great! Have to remember to keep your hand over the keypad when putting in the PIN number though...

Kathyjelly · 08/06/2010 14:37

I've tried the pay @ pumpe twice. On each occasion it has taken two assistants and twenty minutes to get the transaction completed. So no thanks, I'll stick with the kiosk if it's all the same to you.

But I'll have card in hand, not buy groceries and get off the forecourt ASAP so won't delay you any.

darcymum · 08/06/2010 14:39

They are all doing it deliberately just to annoy you.

diddl · 08/06/2010 14:42

"i wonder why the UK does not adopt the same service that is used in the rest of Europe, where every petrol station has a pump attendant?

they fill the car, you pay them with card or cash and drive off. simple! "

Where in Europe are you talking about, Elenio?

emptyshell · 08/06/2010 14:58

I also go on a periodic rebellion against having to deal with machines rather than people - when I refuse to pay at pump, refuse to use the self-service tills of supreme irritation (unexpected item in bagging area my bottom... that's a BAG in there) and the robot librarian substitute machines in the local library.

You use them = more excuse for them to cut jobs and employ less humans.

DuelingFanjo · 08/06/2010 19:47

"They are all doing it deliberately just to annoy you."

thougt so, the bastards.

OP posts:
NanBullen · 08/06/2010 20:01

AhLaVache and ActuallyMyNamesMarina maybe the people working in banks you encounter would rather you use the machines because then they don't have to deal with harridans such as yourself who think of them as "muppets" and "noddy no brains" and want you out of the bank as quickly as possible, non?

bigstripeytiger · 08/06/2010 20:04

I have a combined Tesco credit card and clubcard, and cannot make it work in the pay at pump thing, so have to go into the kiosk.

tassisssss · 08/06/2010 20:07

reasons i don't always pay at the pump:

because i'm not convinced i'm getting tesco points
because i have a money off voucher
because i'm picking up some chocolate/newspaper/milk at the same time
