To be utterly fed up of other people's stupid diets?

As the title says - I'm sick of people telling me how they've lost 2 stone eating cereal for breakfast and lunch. They may look fantastic, but surely all the weight will go back on once they start eating normally again. And the cereal in question has the nutritional value of cardboard.

I also get fed up of people talking about giving up 'naughty' foods, and how they're eating Muller Light yogurts instead to be healthy. It makes me really angry when I see all of the diet products which are sold as healthy alternatives, and so many people believe the advertising and think they're being healthy by eating them.

I'm overweight myself, and have done crash diet after crash diet. Now, I'm losing weight by eating sensible portions of food which is mostly unprocessed and low in saturated fat. Also by doing lots of exercise. I may only be losing a pound a week, but at least I can stick to this way of eating for years to come and I'm not filling my body with crappy artificial sweeteners. And don't get me started on people telling me 'I've been really good today' because they've eaten a Go Ahead bar instead of a Dairy Milk. And then there's all the crash bikini diets in magazines at the moment . Sorry if this is ranty, but every other woman I know seems to be doing silly diets at the moment, even a friend with a phD in biology is on Slimfast.

I am jealous of how good people look, but last time I did a crash diet I lost 1.5 stone, half of which went back on in 2 weeks when I started eating normally again. I'd much rather wait for a a year to be slim but keep it off for longer.

YABU - their body their choice. I don't understand why this is making you so angry.

coderrooo · 07/06/2010 10:46

dont eat so much and excercise although not earign works better

coderrooo · 07/06/2010 10:46

diet doestn meaneating crap does it?

compo · 07/06/2010 10:49

Sounds like your the one obsessing not them
just chill out and think about what you're doing not them

GetOrfMoiLand · 07/06/2010 11:02

I am one of those aspartame bores, so agree with you about how daft it is to eat crap with sweetener in.

Mind you, I should shut up as I am currently on a carb free diet in order to look acceptable in terrifying bikinis.

ImSoNotTelling · 07/06/2010 11:04

YANBU you are quite right of course that your approach is the sustainable one

When working in offices I have found teh constant conversation about diets and "oooh naughty shall we have a bit of cake giggle giggle" just really boring. Not to mention when it interferes with longstanding regular lunch plans (lunch being the high point of my day )

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/06/2010 11:14

YANBU to be annoyed by crash dieting touted as some sort of "healthy" eating plan. Diet foods, for the most part, are full of processed crap. And there's nothing more boring than people going on about their diets all the time.

Y would BU to say anything though.

EveWasFramed10 · 07/06/2010 11:44

I know what you mean, flib...it does get a bit old to hear about, but it's what people do, so there's nothing you can really say. I can't abide all that fake low fat stuff...I suppose it's good for the weight loss part, but I can't imagine for a minute that it's HEALTHIER in any way.

Like you, I've traded in 'dieting' for being a bit sensible with 'real' food and exercising as much as I can. I find it to be much more realisitic...there is a statistic that says that 98% of diets fail, but eating smaller portions of things you like and moving more has better overall results, and can be carried on for life.

Well done to you...I hope you feel great!

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 07/06/2010 11:48

YAB a bit U.

Healthy cereal for two meals a day is not wrong at all! It's an easy way (I find) of keeping my calories low enough to lose weight, and I don't keep picking at it, like I do a loaf of bread if I have sandwiches instead, for example.

Crash dieting is mad, but I've lost 1.5 stone since last summer by counting calories (ie. eating less for each meal....which sometimes meant eating cereal for lunch) and have kept it off. So in that instance, YABU.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 07/06/2010 11:49

And if you are counting calories, then you will substitute your normal snacks for low calorie ones, which makes sense. It's up to the person whether they go for an apple, or for a no-added sugar alternative of their usual thing so no need to be so angry about it.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 07/06/2010 11:57

Don't get angry, just feel quietly smug when you're still slim next summer and everyone else is still obsessing over calorie content, or eating nothing all day because they ate half a pound of chocolate the night before.

The tortoise wins the race.

< lost 11/2 stones over the last two years - 1/2 st to go! >

wannaBe · 07/06/2010 12:09

I think it's more the attitude by some that "oooh look at me, I've lost a stone this week and you've only lost two lb, clearly my soups and shakes diet is far superior to your way of healthy eating as I can lose so much more weight so much more quickly than you."

And the fact that people are clearly in denial about just how unhealthy so many of these diets really are, such as lighter life, atkins etc.

I looked briefly at the new boots one, Tony Ferguson, and when i looked at the soups and shakes etc I was when I discovered that you have to take supplements ie vitamins etc on top of that. No diet that means you have to take supplements can be good for you.

gingernutlover · 07/06/2010 12:33

the trouble with any diet is that it's exciting to lose wieght and most people feel proud of having done so, and therefore want to share this, which is interesting for about 30 seconds.

i am always tryign to lose wieght but it's bloody hard work and sometimes it helps to chat to someone about it.

So, yab abit u but can totally understand what you are saying

gingernutlover · 07/06/2010 12:34

but you are vvv right about all the crap diet food.

colditz · 07/06/2010 12:39

Actually I do see your point. I am sick of hearing someone telling me how fabulous Lighterlife was, how it cost her £70 a week and she lost 5 stone (and she has put 6 back on again this year)

But she won't eat "healthy crap" it's chips or nothing at all

colditz · 07/06/2010 12:40

I lost 2.5 stone in 7 months. I went to weightwatchers.

I put half of it back on, 2 years later, but to be honest the thought of losing it again doesn't scare me because weight watchers isn't a mad insane YOU WILL NOT CONSUME diet, it's really just fat dropping.

shimmerysilverglitter · 07/06/2010 12:42

This diet works and doesn't even feel like a diet. If you read the science behind it, it seems very sound.

Been on it for two weeks now, lost 3 pounds and I don't even feel like I am dieting.

The Alternate Day Diet

But YANBU, the idea of being on SlimFast makes me want to tear my hair out and all the chemical crap in diet foods as well.

MumInBeds · 07/06/2010 12:44

For what it's worth I did slimfast 3 1/2 years ago and lost 4st7lbs, I've gained back 7lbs and did so fairly quickly but I've kept the rest off, despite a pregnancy during that time.

Sometimes it can work using diet products.

wannaBe · 07/06/2010 12:53

my mum did lighter life. She lost 3.5 stone, came off it and piled it all back on and then some.

I can certainly see the appeal with these diets in the short term, if you have a lot of weight to lose then it does get demoralising losing it a lb at a time, and it's much easier to keep going when you can see results, but the truth is that they're a false reality, because they take the decisionmaking re what to put on your plate out of your hands, there is no learning about portion control. And while there is an element of maintanence afterward where you're supposed to learn about these things, you're not doing it at the time ie when you're losing the weight.

It shouldn't be about dieting, it should be about lifestyle. Weight loss plans such as weightwatchers are far better because they involve real food.

canella · 07/06/2010 12:54

different ways of losing weight work for different people - yes the sensible thing is to lose the weight slowly and to try to keep it off but sometimes people want to lose quickly for a special occasion - wedding/holiday etc.

i think YABU to be intolerant of people trying to make themselves slimmer. maybe they are fed up of you going on about how you are losing weight the sensible way?

cyb · 07/06/2010 13:05

I can sympathise with the Op

soo many folk on here say 'I'm starting lighter Life' or I'm starting slimfast

waste of time
