To think that an arm broken on Saturday should be seen in the fracture clinic before Thursday?

YANBU

rachaelsara · 31/05/2010 22:57

Actually, it was Sunday, confused because of the bank hol (and lack of sleep tending a sore dd!)

She's got a broken arm, right near her wrist, at one point they were talking about surgery, next thing, it's off you go until thursday! The temporary cast is really curved and she's in a lot of pain...

YANBU oh my god! by thursday it would have started to heal but brokenly and will have to be re-broken - very painful. I know there have to be cuts in services including NHS but setting a broken arm has to happen within 24 hours surely!

UniS · 31/05/2010 23:00

Assuming no clinic on bank hol monday, its only 2 days later than earliest possible which presumably was full with kids who broke their bones on thursday ,friday or saturday before yours did.

Normally a few days gap anyway to let inflammation die down a bit.

rachaelsara · 31/05/2010 23:01

Good. I'll kick up a big fuss in the morning. We've got insurance (through D.H's work) so I'll threaten to use it. Will I need a G.P. referal to get that started?

ah, cross post. Now if shes in a lot of pain and it looks like the temp cast has got twisted/ bent then go back to A&E.

I love mumsnet. I've been trying to google it and get all manner of strange sites, but no opinions, which is what I'm after!

Oh Unis! It's curved like her arm was, should it be straight?

Most hospitals only run a skeleton service over a bank holiday, it shouldn't start to heal between now and Thursday though to be honest. They do often send patients home, review them in the clinic a few days to a week later then decide to operate. Take her back if she's in pain though.

I hope she's on the mend soon.

rachaelsara · 31/05/2010 23:07

She was swinging on a rope hanging from a tree and the stick she was using broke and she fell at the hieght of the swing and landed on her front with her arm under her. She's bruised all over. The good thing was, she was being supervised by 5 adults, normally she'd be playing out with her friends. She's 9.

The plaster shouldn't be straight, it's there to support the bone to stop it from bending any further.

juneybean · 31/05/2010 23:10

When I broke my arm I went in on Friday and was out and back to school by Monday lol

So it won't matter if it starts to heal bent? Or will it take longer than 4 days to set on it's own? Or could it be the shape of the bandage? Her fingers hurt if she wiggles them, is that because it's all swollen up under there?

My ds broke his wrist in a Saturday. It was X rayed and put in a temporary cast that night, and he was then given an appointment for he fracture clinic on, I think the following Thursday. I queried the delay, but was told that it wasn't any use going sooner because the swelling had to go down a bit before it could be x rayed again and a permanent cast put on. We were told to go back to A and E at once if he was in a lot of pain, or if his fingers swelled up.

Maybe your dd is the same?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 31/05/2010 23:12

You can give her ibuprofen (unless she's allergic or is asthmatic), this will help with the swelling aswell.

rachaelsara · 31/05/2010 23:14

They didn't give us any pain relief to bring home! They gave her oromorph (sp?) and entonox while they sorted her out, and sent us away with a smile! I've given her nurofen and co-codamol, which, tbh, takes the edge off as long as she sits still.

He was at school in the temporary cast on the Monday.

We found that a bean bag on the bed next to him was the most comfortable way for him to sleep.

We were also told to get him to keep it elevated as much as possible - the bean bag helped with this as well.
