my dd1 had a birthday party today. was a lovley little party, dcs were all enjoying themselves until the mum whos dd party it was, said that her PLB - dd4 was upstairs asleep 'doped up on calpol' as her ear peircing had got infected. poor little mite is only 8 months. why do people feel the need to do this to such little babies? they are not a fashion acsessory

Why? I'm genuinely interested. Few people seem to object to any of these terms:

snobby
classy
naff
tacky
elegant
toffee-nosed
salt-of-the-earth
chinless wonder
hooray henry
yuppie
jolly hockey sticks
down-to-earth
chattering classes

They all describe, in a very discerning, sharply observant way, the good or bad qualities, or sterotypical behaviour associated with different social classes, or just good or bad qualities in a person's tastes or presentation, irrespective of social class. To me, no one of them is more or less offensive than another, but I can guarentee none of the above would illicit the same negative reaction on MN to the word 'chavvy'. They are all subjective - a matter of opinion, or observation.

Disagree under 16 - don't mind them on children if they are capable of looking after them themselves.

I made my 13 month old hold a jolly hocky stick, whilst I shovelled in home made houmous when she was getting the metal forced through her ears.

When she screeched(don't they all?), I soothed her with a Boden bottle full of lentils.

8 years on, she seems fine, even eats lentils, so long as they are not from Tesco.....

'guarantee' - just thought I'd amend that before some clever dick does it for me, and tries to use it against me.

Nice summary.

I don't like them dd will not be having hers done at any age because I had a reaction with mine I had them done as a baby and I still remember being unable to communicate they were really hurting .

My mum removed them when I was 4 after she realized she did it because of social pressure . They still hurt now even without earring and i am left with a ugly hole in my ear forever.

I would let dd have her belly pierced when she comes of age but that is her choice and mine never hurt. I don't judge peolpe who do have them done though.
