Hi,

I've been posting her for a little while now and I have used a number of baby forums in the past, but most recently Babycentre. A lot of stuff happened there lately so I decided to start using MN more and so far enjoy the people and how the rules are more relaxed here.

I love the layout ogf BC though, and find it more personal and easier to navigate.

I just wondered what you though about this, do you prefer MN over the other forums? Do you struggle with this one or others?

Hell no! I just went and had a look and it's so cluttered. I like the neat, no frills look of MN. Can't be doing with tickers and photos and all that nonsense.

LackaDAISYcal · 29/05/2010 01:07

Prefer MN over all others, alhtough must admit to never having used babycentre. The lack of high tech-ness (but lots of high tetchiness ) here is what makes it what it is.

Thediaryofanobody · 29/05/2010 01:08

Eek there's world outside of MN!!!
Actually I really miss the old style MN layout... still after about year.

Come on you have to admit MN is far superior all that 'personal' design is just to make it easier to spot friends/clique this way posters are more focused on what is being written rather than who is doing the writing, which means you get a more honest response.

If it's a bit overwhelming you can customise what topics/posts you can see.

BertieBotts · 29/05/2010 01:08

No, I don't like the layout of babycentre - I find it very confusing, I can't find anything on there. And I have used a lot of forums! I guess it's just what you're used to though.

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 01:11

never been any other sites.i am mn monogamous

alpenguin · 29/05/2010 01:16

I find it quite hard to work my way round MN but I'm used to stacking forums. Like a PP said, it's just what you're used to. I've heard about the babycentre trouble and also about it's strict censorship. Can't be arsed with that.

Is it true anyone can become an admin over there and that they have a private admins forum where they bitch about members? That's not nice. At least from what I've seen on mn they call it to your face and are generally allowed to do so. Saying that if anyone can be an admin it seems silly to bitch in private about members.

MrsRhettButler · 29/05/2010 01:20

so whats the goss on bc then? come on, spill

LetThereBeRock · 29/05/2010 01:50

Babycentre has tickers. Tickers are symbols of the Antichrist and his minions.

Thediaryofanobody · 29/05/2010 01:51

Oooh it sounds like BC even has Moldies too only they have a secret forum with the forum now thats just sneaky!

LemonMelon · 29/05/2010 01:58

So you're on Mumsnet but complaining the layout isnt as good as another parenting style site?

I post on Mumsnet cause I like Mumsnet. Why would I come on here if I preferred a different site? Makes no sense to me.

Tortington · 29/05/2010 02:10

you can choose different styles of mumsnet - this can be seen when people say 'up' the thread or 'down' the thread and when some posters refer to pages.

i have mine on mn classic - cos i am an old bird and i like it how it has always been. perhaps op, it might be worth a tinkering?

Peridot30 · 29/05/2010 02:15

NEver been on that site. I do use a few other parenting sites which i like.

differentnameforthis · 29/05/2010 03:42

Oh good God....the tickers are the size of small houses! Gah!

Monkeytoo · 29/05/2010 03:42

I prefer the layout of BC too - more friendly and easier to navigate. This is a bit like using a Windows 95 PC vs. Windows 7!

thumbwitch · 29/05/2010 04:38

YABU - I infinitely prefer MN to any other chat site I have been on, baby-based or otherwise. It is clean, clear, easy to read and without all those ghastly little pictures and comments/tags/tickers that clutter up the chat thread.

I have looked at your babycentre site and still prefer MN. Too many people here will think the same so it's not going to change (I hope!)

MoChan · 29/05/2010 06:11

I used to post on BabyCentre and initially found it easier to navigate/search when I was looking for pregnancy info/help, etc. I got fed up of tickers/politics/censorship though. Oh, and ((((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))))))).

And just ended up feeling more at home here once I did get used to navigating it. Not that I have much time to post here either, tbh.

Ihatepink · 29/05/2010 06:34

OK - as a new convert to MN I like it here - the people actually say what they mean and its funny. But I would like to agree with the OP that there are other sites that are easier to navigate. I like the way you can just post on here at the end of the thread - some make that bit a little more difficult. I like that you can flip the thread - but I don't like the layout. It can be a little confusing to newbies like me. I like the tickers of some of the other sites as it makes the post and the person more 'real'. I like that this site isn't so censored, but at the same time it does have a reputation of being nasty at times. But then thats why I like it - people are being real instead of some of the sugar sweet comments of other sites. I would like to see a little of all (but then I would like the world to be perfect). OH and you should be able to undo while posting and also edit your post (not sure if you can do it as I am new).

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/05/2010 08:33

I like to actually be able to read the words on the screen without ploughing through aload of sparkly tickers and not so witty quotes etc.

Like em simple me. But dont tell dh I said that!

Bumperlicious · 29/05/2010 08:46

Nope, don't like babycentre layout at all. I like mumsnet, I like the no frills. If they introduced tickers I'd have to leave.

blueshoes · 29/05/2010 09:11

Had a quick look at babycentre's community area

Don't like having to put up a photo, the twee personal crap members can put up at the bottom of each post. Each page can only take a few posts because of this. Lots of scrolling to read fairly droll posts.

Too much advertising. Posts are restricted to a relatively thin column in the middle. Again, adds to the scrolling and irritation.

I suppose it attracts huggers and huns. Different strokes.

Prefer mn which cuts the personal guff and dishes the opinions straight up.

There certainly used to be a moderators' forum, which was private. And yes, pretty much anyone who volunteers can be a moderator.

I used bc a lot before and after dd was born and valued the support I got from the birth board I joined. Very little in the way of glitter and text speak. But when ds was born I had nothing in common with the other posters on his board - am sure they were all perfectly nice but we were quite different so I came here. And haven't been back in ages.

It did seem to be the case that when people fell out it was very personal. But also highly censored which i think encourages behind the scenes bitching. Here at least everyone just piles in, has a huge fight then moves on.

I do prefer the lo tech nature of MN. More about the content and less about the layout. And I bloody hate tickers.
