AIBU to think that BC has a better layout that MN?

Hi,

I've been posting her for a little while now and I have used a number of baby forums in the past, but most recently Babycentre. A lot of stuff happened there lately so I decided to start using MN more and so far enjoy the people and how the rules are more relaxed here.

I love the layout ogf BC though, and find it more personal and easier to navigate.

I just wondered what you though about this, do you prefer MN over the other forums? Do you struggle with this one or others?

The general IQ level on MN is much higher than on Babycentre, but I dislike the fussiness of the layout here, the fact that you can't just re-join a thread where you last left it, and not being able to edit or delete posts. I prefer a very basic text-based format with minimal advertising and find MN a bit frilly.

Agree that babycentre's tickers and sigs are irritating. I don't need to be constantly reminded of your engagement date, wedding date, husband's name, miscarriages, DCs full names, dates of birth, colour of knickers, etc. every time you say something, thank you.

MoChan · 29/05/2010 09:51

Actually, that's it, MamaLazarou: the one thing that vexes me here that is/was much better at BabyCentre, the fact that the threads remembered where you were up to. Or did? On the old site, not the new site.

blueshoes · 29/05/2010 10:09

Stewie/Mochan/Snicker, that stalking is probably a byproduct of the ridiculous personal signatures.

Gin4495 · 29/05/2010 11:27

LemonMelon i sai i liked a lot about MN, I'm not slagging MN off, just wondering if anyone ekse had trouble navigating it.

I find the talk section massively easier to use on MN than elsewhere. On some of the other sites, it's not even that easy to find in the first place!

MamaLazarou - am quite surprised that you find MN "frilly" - it doesn't strike me as anywhere near as frilly as numerous other baby-centred sites.

I do agree that it would be nice if we had some option to self-edit though - that would be very useful.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 29/05/2010 15:49

I much prefer this. I HATE tickers and pics and all that shit. I like the simplicity of this. It seems less childish, iyswim.

Not that people who use other forums are childish themselves but the payout gives the impression of yoof. if that makes any sense.

I feel mn (layout not posters ) much more mature.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 29/05/2010 15:50

payout layout!

Ronaldinhio · 29/05/2010 15:52

I still use the old view...no changes for me please

paisleyleaf · 29/05/2010 15:56

"A lot of stuff happened there lately"
oooo sounds intriguing.
Are there a lot of you here now?

I love MN layout. I have it on muted (I think) and all on one page reading down.

fartblossom · 29/05/2010 15:56

I like MN for the main reason being there is no text speak. One thing I cant stand is trying to read a post where every word is either shortened or spealt wrong (ie lyk dis ).

I think when it comes to tickers, people like them for themselves, but I too dont care how old someone's child is, how long they have been married etc.

However, when I first came on here I didnt have a clue how to get to the talk bit and found it very confusing. In fact I registered on here a long time before actually talking, but ONCE I found my way it became very easy.

I do agree with a previous poster about the layout here being quite old looking I think the words were something along the line of windows 95 vs windows 7. But perhaps its the simplicity of the layout that makes it easy to follow (once you've figured out what to click to get you where you wanna be)

BTW Ive never heard of BC. I started off with the BBC parenting boards (nice small community, get to know people well, but got too moderated) and now have come on here and also use NM's local bits. (ie to have ideas where to go, what to do, nearly new bit)

Although its not often I read threads anymore let alone post on them.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 29/05/2010 15:57

Can't believe I missed that bit, Paisley - what stuff, OP? Tell all

Pikelit · 29/05/2010 15:59

Dear God, that's a nauseous looking site. I can see how it'd attract the hunnies, huggers, aficionados of user-names composed of symbols - oh, and anyone who failed to concentrate during Literacy Hour so needs lots of pink and flashing stuff but it isn't, in anyway superior, to the clarity of MN.

It also has pop-ups.

MonkeyFunk · 29/05/2010 15:59

It is hard to navigate MN but if you use one more than the other then of course you wil prefer that one - you are used to it.

Having said that BC and NM make my eyes bleed with all that shiny shit after the posts.

Mn is customisable though ....

WoTmania · 29/05/2010 16:21

I find MN lots easier to read than most other forums.

Gin4495 · 29/05/2010 17:35

Just loads of cliques and private groups slagging people off. Like the other PP said as well they have a moderators board where they slag everyone off. It isn't nice!

I've just customised my page and it's made it a bit easier....I need to get used to it round here.

I like how its more anonymous in some ways because you get honest opiniosn.

I used to go to BC when pregnant and found some lovely people there who supported me through a rough time. I hung around for some time after, but things got so cliquey that it was suffocating at times. And you could never shake off you posting history - I made a numpty of myself on one thread and it followed me forever!

Then I found MN and I never looked back

Admittedly when I first came here, the layout looked very strange. But it is much easier to load on my ancient computer due to lack of tickers and cutesy photos. Also loads easier to lurk on in the office - it was murder trying to hide all the sparkly stuff from my eagle-eyed boss!

I love MN, though you do have to be a little thick-skinned. I have learnt not to get too involved in threads and walk away when things get too much. I also very very rarely re-visit "Threads I'm On" to avoid the possibility that someone has reacted badly to my post and is calling me names (not that I write anything contentious ever!)

NanBullen · 29/05/2010 18:36

how is mn hard to navigate though? you just click on talk at the top of the page and then either choose a topic or click on last 15 minutes, active convos etc. Or am i missing something?
