In thinking if people ignored the stupid troll posts the troll in question would piss off ??

And people on ere would save hours of their lives in the process not getting involved in pointless, non arguments

Exactly! We'd have to do some work!

The troll posts and resulting threads have quite amused me today, maybe I'm just shallow.

pagwatch · 28/05/2010 18:39

lines up behind Claire in 'shallow' Line

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/05/2010 18:39

How can you tell what's a troll post and what's not?

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 28/05/2010 18:40

I like troll posts

ApocalypseCheese · 28/05/2010 18:44

Think that's the problem tbh, some of them (like the leaving baby in a pooey nappy one ) go a bit too far, and people were quite rightly getting upset.

Just ignore em imo, then the troll shan't inherit the net

ApocalypseCheese · 28/05/2010 18:46

And there's a difference between a funny troll post and some of the darker ones, it was the upsetting ones I was referring to.

OP posts:
Pingpong · 28/05/2010 18:46

I only saw the start of the pooey nappey one and then went to stalk advanced search the OP and she has posted a lot about sleep deprivation and feeding every two hours. I don't think she is a troll I think her question was genuine.

RunawayWife · 28/05/2010 18:51

Love a good troll post when there is nothing on TV. What have I missed today then??

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/05/2010 18:57

I always miss them, so I'm simply not bovvered

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/05/2010 18:57

I think the problem is that sometimes people call troll when the person simply holds a view that other people disagree with. A lot.

I believe X, Y is wrong. Nobody can possibly believe Y. Only X is allowed. You claim you believe Y. You must be lying. Therefore you are a troll. If you were real, you would believe what I believe. Or you would be swayed by the strength of my argument if you didn't initially believe what i believe because I am right and my argument is right and any right thinking person can see it.

It is an extreme arrogance on the part of the troll hunter, in some cases. Not all. But some. Because it begins with the troll hunter's total belief that a real person and a real post must be a view that makes sense to them and that they view as valid.

Some cases are clear trolly shit stirring of course.

But where there is any doubt and a person is simply 'guilty' of seeing things in a different way, I for one would rather err on the side of caution and take posts at face value.

BitOfFun · 28/05/2010 19:00

That OP was trolling though, as shown by their reaction to the replies. Then did the classic claiming-it's-all-a-social-experiment to prove we are self-righteous bitches.

slushy06 · 28/05/2010 19:02

I missed the end but I hope it was troll even though she was a regular.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/05/2010 19:03

ah, a social experiment troll I love those

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 28/05/2010 19:05

Which one was that?! What did I miss?!

ApocalypseCheese · 28/05/2010 19:08

Really don't think there is anything funny about starting troll threads regarding child neglect/abuse.

'Social experiment' or not.

2blessed2bstressed · 28/05/2010 22:00

Am still newbie, please tell me, what's a troll?

slushy06 · 28/05/2010 22:09

Someone (hairy arsed trucker for example) who is bored and posts on a non existent emotive topic (breastfeeding for example) for a laugh and attention, usually getting more and more absurd (when pulled up more story will come up usually more emotive topics).

Jamieandhismagictorch · 28/05/2010 22:27

Hecate - I agree up to a point. I think it can be harmful to call someone a troll. Much better to ignore the thread if you are in any doubt

I got sucked into a troll thread the other day. I used to think they didn't really exist - it was just someone who held views that "we" don't agree with. But this person was trying to elicit stories and emotional reactions from people - and not responding in a normal way at all - very short responses, not answering questions, then getting angry and martyrish. I asked for the thread to be pulled as it was obv a troll and people were baring their souls, but it died eventually of its own accord.

I won't do that again. Will just steer clear

Tidey · 28/05/2010 22:32

What happened to the thread from earlier that descended into a load of nonsense about people being rude with fruit? Did it somehow kick off into nastiness?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 28/05/2010 22:36

YANBU

scottishmummy · 28/05/2010 22:56

people can respond to what they wish.troll or not

troll patrol are worse than trolls.all that history checking,or you newbie, probing around. squawking Troll!journalist! suspecting ill and sniffing about

BeenBeta · 28/05/2010 23:19

I never spot trolls ever. [gullible]

However, I was on the receiving end of being loudly and repeatedly called a troll when I made my first ever post. It was a very odd and disconcerting feeling to have dozens of people shout at you on the internet when you are trying to express a reasonable point of view.

I still dont like to see people shouting troll at a newbie poster.
