And people on ere would save hours of their lives in the process not getting involved in pointless, non arguments

I never spot trolls, am completely gullible. I'm quite happy that way and would rather people didn't ever call troll tbh. Now I'll just sit here waiting for that nice man to come back with my £20.

ThatVikRinA22 · 28/05/2010 23:34

cant see the point in troll spotting. someone, somewhere, will benefit from whats said because you can bet your bottom dollar that someone, somewhere is in the same situation. why dissect a post to the nth degree?

dont get this troll thing at all.

and some people will scoff and call troll at anything theyve not experience of. doesnt make it not true. just makes the op feel like shit.

CoinOperatedGirl · 29/05/2010 00:19

How can you NOT spot a bloody troll, obviously the most absurd/funny ones come to light quite quickly.Even the long term/build up a story ones are bloody obvious. Anyone who fell for the last major one (the twin woman, can't remember her name) was very naive.

People will always get involved in arguments about minutae though, it's fun and passes the time .

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 00:26

lots of so called oldies talk shite.so do trolls.

people can respond to whomever/whenever.

however

the annoying braying of
newbie
journalist
just checked yer history
....is really inane and lame

dont care actually.up to folk whom they respond to.and a bit of savvy may be needed too

dont need edicts about whom and who to respond to

CoinOperatedGirl · 29/05/2010 00:31

People should call troll when they smell something fishy! I admit I'm not that brave, I can't take the flaming. Honest well meaning lovely people are often taken in by trolls, especially on MN. I have seen the troll word spoken about people who hold minority views on other forums, those who hold to their opinion regardless of popular opinion.

It's not the same on mn, trolls are those that elicit money/emotion falsely. Obviously regulars trolling for laughs are different than than those who tell a convincing sob story, but I believe that there ultimate objective is a "collection".

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 00:40

we are adults, people need to be discerning and remember its word on a screen and retain some savvy. without troll patrol popping up and squawking troll all damn time

no they shouldnt call troll. they should use their heads and report suspect posts to HQ and then use their judgement on whether to post or not to post. simple as that. shouting troll just gets everyone piling in for a pop at the op. some people live lovely little sheltered lives where abuse doesnt happen, incest doesnt happen, domestic violence doesnt happen, etc so they see something out of "their" ordinary and shout troll - it just attracts an angry mob and does fuck all else.

if you seriously suspect a poster is lying then report it. and use your own judgement.

CoinOperatedGirl · 29/05/2010 00:45

I do agree Scottishmummy people are responsible for themselves, but would you not warn a friend you thought was being taken advantage of?

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 00:48

yes,but if they have capacity and proceed nonetheless well up to them

CoinOperatedGirl · 29/05/2010 00:57

But Vicar, it's not the genuine posters who usually elicit the troll call. Most genuine posters will go back to the op and respond. I think you would be naive to think that sick people don't use MN for there own nefarious purposes.

Do you really want people telling accounts of child abuse or incest etc for gross people to basically get off on it? If you think that would never happen you are naive. People should be very very way of putting deep emotional details on the internet. This world is sick.

scottishmummy · 29/05/2010 01:01

an is element of appropriate self disclosure is needed

some times people have shared harrowing, raw things and perhaps should be more circumspect and cautious

the need to protect oneself should be greater than need to share to strangers

ApocalypseCheese · 29/05/2010 16:20

Vicarinatutu That's my point, if people think a post dosent ring true they could just click report or ignore them.

That way the 'troll' dosent get the reaction they crave and genuine posters don't get accusations and abuse hurled at them when they may already be distressed .

Rollmops · 29/05/2010 17:51

No no noooo... why report a good troll? Fun for all for few hours. The problem, though, is with the quality of the trolls recently. Most are low-brow and dull yet still get people pouring out genuine emotions on their threads, cringey affair.

thegirlwiththemouseyhair · 29/05/2010 18:33

On some other forums you can see how many people read a thread and then see how many have responded.
Generally this is about 10% who reply against those who have read.

So clearly the majority of people don't respond to trolls.

ApocalypseCheese · 30/05/2010 23:29

Farkin trolls

BeenBeta I too got called a troll on my first post followed by things such as "funny first post" blah blah blah, it's quite horrible and makes you feel a little shit. BBBBBBBBut I got over it! I can though now understand why people call troll after wasting my time posting gullibly on some troll's threads, its a complete pita.
