in thinking that the Government cannot possibly ensure people are better off working than on benefits unless they increase wages massively?

TBH I cannot see how the Govt are going th achieve their aim to make sure "nobody is better off financially on benefits than in work".

I work part-time as I have a son with a disability. I take home £849 and get Tax credit of £190 plus Child benefit of course - Working Tax credit adds another £50 - all in all just over £1100. I am just over the limit for housing benefit and all other help although if DLA is approved for my son that may change a bit.

One of my families gets housing benefit of £700 a month plus tax credit, plus income support, plus child benefit. On paper at least they out-strip me and unless wages drastically improve (oh - was that a recession I just saw over there) then nothing much CAN change. The Govt are talking big but cannot deliver no matter what they say.

I will stay worse off financially than the family I work with who will remain unemployed because wages are NEVER going to amount to enough for them to get work and maintain their home. Not their fault and I am more fortunate in other ways but financially - nah - they are doing a bit better than me (but probably only just).

I am watching the Govt but not holding my breath on this one.

Or do you know different?

If so - explain because I am being a bit thick about it.

exceltelemedia is the company I worked for. You just log on and off when you want and the phone calls come through to you. Its easy work and good pay. It isnt that bad its just a difficult job to hide from people you know!

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 20:58

ha ha ha, easy work??

Doesn't sound that easy to me tbh.

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:00

What exactly is the pay like Sunshine2010?

sungirltan · 29/05/2010 21:07

and hey theres always prostitution

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:12

Prostitution sounds better paid than adult chatline.

Sorry, don't mean to disrespect adult chat line workers, but come on, it can hardly be called easy work, or good pay, can it??

Much as prostitution could be called easy money or good pay (for what you're expected to do?)

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:16

Do you do this too Herbie?

Am now wondering how many adult chat workers are on MN.

No way would I work on webcam for £15 an hour. That's exploitation fgs!!

Not really?? Do you sort of work for an adult chat thing then?

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:20

Up to £10 per hour doesn't sound promising to me.

How do you earn the whole £10 an hour?

sungirltan · 29/05/2010 21:23

i certainly don't consider enabling a stranger to masturbate easy work either.

I cant believe the thread has moved on to this.

My personal feelings are it is completely degrading to women, and not least of all to the person doing it. You may as well get out there and walk the streets.

For anyone in a relationship, I would also put it on par with cheating.

Absolutely vile.... and for less than £10 per hour?! But of course that is just my opinion.

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:29

Glad I'm not the only one sungirltan.

I'm not convinced it's 'easy' to earn £10 an hour anyway, and even if it is, that's rather poor pay for being treated like some sort of masturbation aid over the phone.

A job like that would make me feel dirty personally.

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:33

HerbieTea I would have thought the opposite tbh. Surely the objective is to keep the guy on the phone for as long as possible, therefore listening to him for as long as you can. I can't imagine you would make anywhere near £10 per hour if they hang up asap???

sparklefrog · 29/05/2010 21:35

Come back Sunshine2010 and tell us the truth about adult chat lines.

Are you seriously considering this Herbie?

I can't imagine not feeling degraded chatting about the weird and definitely not wonderful things you might have to chat about to keep the guy hanging on. Ewwwww.

sungirltan · 29/05/2010 21:47

thanks sparklefrog - glad i'm not the only one that finds it quite alarming. whilst i realise its sunshine's personal (and i sincerely hope free) choice to do this i'd hate to move toward a society which condones the idea that we expect the poor to support themselves by any means possible, however demeaning/objectifying. thats a horrid though imo
