Today, at my local hospital (I was there to see consultant) after being passed around from room to room, because of much confusion about why I had been referred there - a midwife and I (who was the MW who looked after me in my 1st pg) were discussing my nephew, who last summer was born with a very rare condition.

She was asking about how he was getting on with treatments, how he was progressing developmentally and what his physical problems were, when I heard a fellow patient (who was hugely pregnant) sitting opposite me turn to her friend/mother and say "huh, would have been better for everyone if that'd ended in miscarriage"

I turned, growled, and said "If you haven't got any thing nice to say, shut your face"

luckily my name was then called and I scuttled away to my appointment...

Well, was i? My DP seems to think I should have ignored her, and her ignorance.

YABVU you should have bitch slapped her instead! Well, no not really, it sounded like you were very restrained under the circumstances.... I'm a bit naive I think, I can't believe people still think that way.

YellowDaffodil · 28/05/2010 09:29

YANBU - Infact you sound like you were very restrained.

I'd have told her to fuck off and then some.

Your DN clearly has a loving family and I'm sure is a wonderful child. Her poor offspring will be stuck with that evil, narrow minded bitch.

sunnydelight · 28/05/2010 09:34

YANBU. The level of ignorance of some people is astounding!

JaneS · 28/05/2010 11:19

You were incredibly restrained. The correct response is 'You're referring to yourself, I take it?'

Lexilicious · 28/05/2010 11:38

Once the comment had been made I agree that you were right to pull the woman up on her awful comment.

However, you were discussing a minor's medical condition in public earshot with a medical professional. The midwife should have know not to discuss details with you, and you're not his parent, because surely it is confidential? If it sounded to the other woman like you were discussing rare developmental conditions in general, she would have thought she was just butting in to say that that was beyond the threshold she thought anyone could deal with. In which case she was ignorant and rude for interrupting but not personally insulting...

[Just re-read the OP] She was actually commenting that a member of your family should not have been born.

I do think that the midwife shouldn't have engaged in discussion openly about your nephew's condition though.

bluecardi · 28/05/2010 11:40

Shocking - you were very restrained in your response

OnlyWantsOne · 28/05/2010 13:52

lexilicious I was discussing my nephew, in a maternity waiting room that included myself, the other woman and her friend and perhaps 2 other couples. At no time was my voice louder than a quiet chat, and we were discussing it very privately. In actual fact we were discussing how he will have to have his skull broken to save his life.

Im getting cross at you.

OnlyWantsOne · 28/05/2010 13:52

was it you in the waiting room?

Jesus I can't believe she said that. She would have deserved a proper slap.

hmc · 28/05/2010 14:06

I'm glad you gave her what for!

OnlyWantsOne · 28/05/2010 14:10

So am I wrong here, its ok to say what you like about some one else, and to ordain that a child should have died, within their ear shot - simple if they have been discussing some thing in your presence?

yanbu, good for you! Your dn and his family would be so proud of you!

minouminou · 29/05/2010 00:25

Let's hope that when this total cow goes into labour, it really bloody hurts and that she has piles for the rest of her life.
Twat.
I'll say it again: twat.

MadameCheese · 29/05/2010 00:53

Lol mino. Let's hope this women's child turns out to be perfect, otherwise it's going to be miserable its whole life. How can she possibly make a judgement on his quality of life and the love his parents have for him?

giraffesCANdriveAcar · 29/05/2010 00:55

yanbu what a cow
