Today, at my local hospital (I was there to see consultant) after being passed around from room to room, because of much confusion about why I had been referred there - a midwife and I (who was the MW who looked after me in my 1st pg) were discussing my nephew, who last summer was born with a very rare condition.

She was asking about how he was getting on with treatments, how he was progressing developmentally and what his physical problems were, when I heard a fellow patient (who was hugely pregnant) sitting opposite me turn to her friend/mother and say "huh, would have been better for everyone if that'd ended in miscarriage"

I turned, growled, and said "If you haven't got any thing nice to say, shut your face"

luckily my name was then called and I scuttled away to my appointment...

Well, was i? My DP seems to think I should have ignored her, and her ignorance.

Good grief. I'm speechless.

ouryve · 27/05/2010 20:28

YANBU!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 27/05/2010 20:31

I clicked on this thread all ready to say YABU and didn't need to be rude to someone but I change my mind after seeing what she said first. She deserved been told to "shut your face" and then some!

Thediaryofanobody · 27/05/2010 20:36

YANBU what an appalling attitude. on your poor nephews behalf.

blossomx · 27/05/2010 20:51

good heavens... what a wicked thing to say. good for you, I would of probably been so shocked I wouldn't of known what to say!

I wonder how she would of felt if it was the other way around. Sour faced cow... sounds like she is going to be a lovely mum

BigFatSepticToe · 27/05/2010 20:56

she was totally out of order and your response was totally understandable , justified and restrained

PMSL at the expression "pop out of your flaps" that must become a MN catchphrase! LOL

ilovesprouts · 27/05/2010 20:59

i would of smacked her in the gob the cheeky cow

ClaireDeLoon · 27/05/2010 21:03

I can't believe anyone would say something so vile, YANBU at all.

whatname · 27/05/2010 21:03

I'd have smacked her.

zippy79 · 27/05/2010 21:04

What a bitch!- What an evil thing to say about a child. The fact that she is soon to give birth herself makes it even all the more disturbing

outnumbered2to1 · 27/05/2010 21:08

i think my response would have been along the lines of "it would have been better for everyone if YOUR mother had kept her legs shut and her knickers on then sensible people wouldn't have to deal with such an ignorant evil little cow like you in this world...."

then i most likely would have slapped her AND her mother...

god people like that make me wanna hurt something (usually them) Petty small minded ignorant arseholes who most likely think the world owes them a living...... aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ok rant over - hope your DN is doing well

OnlyWantsOne · 27/05/2010 21:12

the really shitty thing is, people will one day say things like this, when my darling little nephew will hear, and understand

OP posts:
rewardgirl · 27/05/2010 21:16

I'm glad you DID say something to that evil, ignorant cow. I'd have been so gobsmacked I'd have just done the goldfish impression, then been annoyed with myself all week for not saying something back....

Disgusting...

KickArseQueen · 27/05/2010 21:19

YATotallyNBU Just lately there have been several pregnant women / new mums who have said some really shocking things in my hearing.

Its as tho they think they can get away with saying whatever they like and be let off because they are "hormonal" or make it about them being upset.

A recent one was a comment on the playground that a new baby may have special needs/ a syndrome and one of the very pregnant ladies who disliked the mum said "lets hope so",

I don't understand this its disgusting.

OnlyWantsOne · 27/05/2010 21:20

oh my god kickarsequeen thats fucking terrible!

OP posts:
mumbar · 27/05/2010 21:28

YA sssssssssssssooooooooooooo NBU.

I work in a school for pupils with severe, profound and multiple difficulties. Some have very rare and complicated syndromes - some so rare no-one knows what they are.

All these children are happy, loved and fantastic personalities. They all deserve the right to a happy life with oppotunities.

Glad you said something and hope you nephew is doing well.

Best of luck with your pregnancy too.

KickArseQueen · 27/05/2010 22:14

only Don't, I had to force myself to just walk away. If i'd said 1 word I would have ripped her head off. Horrible.

2shoes · 27/05/2010 22:17

ya so nbu
what an awful thing to say

ilovemydogandMrObama · 27/05/2010 22:24

Don't think I've ever heard anything so shocking.

Isolated instance. I really hope your nephew never hears such ignorance....

TiggyR · 27/05/2010 22:30

What an absolute cow. Let's hope (for poor her baby's sake) it's born perfect.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 27/05/2010 22:31

YANBU. You were extremely restrained.

lazarusb · 27/05/2010 22:46

Ignorance is bliss and she's probably very happy. Hope the ground swallowed her up and she's feeling crap tonight. When i was told at 5 months pg that dc3 might have Down's you wouldn't believe what people said to me, even family and friends. Fuckwits. Well done!

mumof2teenboys · 28/05/2010 08:27

YANBU, my niece was born 17 weeks early and was discharged from hospital still reliant on extra oxygen.

We were in town shopping and an old lady peered into the pram and said to her friend 'oh look, poor thing shouldn't be allowed out, it looks horrible'

My sister just stood there looking like she was going to cry, I turned around and told the nastybitch old lady to f**k off and keep her stupid, thoughtless opinions to herself.
