to expect a refund for my ID card?

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 18:35

DH and I both have ID cards, we spent £60 on them and have only had them for 2 months!!

I am absolutely furious at Teresa May's comment that we can at least keep our ID cards as a souvenir! No doubt, as the majority of the 15,000 people who paid for one in good faith and had it taken away from them and not receiving a refund for the pleasure is in the North West, she doesn't give a shit.

Ok so they don't want to spend any more money on it. But everyone who had one was voluntarily on that database so why scrap it altogether and make them completely invalid, wasting our money and what they've spent so far?

And they're keeping quiet about all the people who they employed who will now be losing their jobs. I really want to do something about this but don't know where to start.

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. I think you have every right to expect your money back.

I'd recommend making yourself a right, royal pain the arse to your MP until you get your money back. Especially if he/she is Con/Lib!

purepurple · 27/05/2010 18:38

YANBU
Can I have the cost of my HIPS refunded too?

Lifeinagoldfishbowl · 27/05/2010 18:40

Why did you get one?

thisisyesterday · 27/05/2010 18:41

yes you ought to get a refund

i presume you'll also be paying back any CTF money you got? and any other money given to you under the last government?:

MadameCastafiore · 27/05/2010 18:41

Why did you have one? Was it necessary for something? Did you HAVE to get one or was it personal choice?

If it was personal choice and you were not made to buy one then I think it is a mistake on your part!

Drusilla · 27/05/2010 18:49

Why did you get one? If it was personal choice, then deinitely YABU

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 18:50

I got one as I used to have an ID card in Spain and preferred to use it as ID than carry my passport around. It WAS a personal choice, which I accept, but it was supposed to be an informed choice based on certain factors such as it being a valid ID document and valid for 10 years.

My local MP is Con. Unfortunately I've now moved south so will be in the minority down here. I expect our old local MP in the north will be getting a lot of letters!

CantSupinate · 27/05/2010 18:51

Why would anyone have bought one voluntarily?

thisisyesterday · 27/05/2010 18:54

but you must have known that there was a possibility that the govt would change, and as such they could be scrapped?

sorry, but i think you;ll just have to suck it up

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 18:55

Ok? So because we bought one voluntarily, it's okay to have it taken away and not be refunded?

If you bought something on the basis that you could use it for 10 years, and the company was bought out and the new company said you couldn't use it anymore, you would report them to Trading Standards.

OP posts:
chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 19:05

Also, when we asked what would happen if the new Government axed the scheme, we were told that the cards would still be valid but no new ones would be issued. So we should get a refund on the basis of having been misinformed.

OP posts:
Firawla · 27/05/2010 19:12

have you had to hand it in or something cant you just still keep it and try to use it?

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 19:14

Apparently we can keep it 'as a souvenir'.

Sainsburys won't even accept it as proof of age!

OP posts:
worldgonemad72 · 27/05/2010 19:15

Weve just paid for a hips pack, over £300, all searches etc have been done so we wont get any money back at all. We had to get one when we wanted to sell our house, you didn't have to buy a id card. Where will they get the money from to refund you?

strawberrycake · 27/05/2010 19:26

We got a letter today informing us that although HIPs are cancelled and we won't need it under our agreement we will still be charged for it. I think they should still bloody make it, even if it isn't used as we're paying for it!

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 19:26

So people are interested in where the Government is going to find £500k? If only all their spending could be so micro-analysed eh?

I'm sure people who paid for a hips pack and haven't sold their house yet will be justly annoyed too. And they can start a thread saying AIBU to expect a refund on my hips? and then everyone can say YANBU. And then maybe someone will pipe up, well didn't you know the Government was going to change and they were going to abolish hips and why didn't you wait until then to put your house on the market?

We can't all see into the future and we make decisions based on what we know and have been told at the time. The fact is that the Tories have stuck two fingers up to the people who have chosen to get the ID cards and have acknowledged that they've completed wasted their money. And presumably those people are supposed to just go 'oh okay then'?

worldgonemad72 · 27/05/2010 19:33

tbh i hope the government dont refund you, the country is in deep shit financially, people are obviously going to lose their jobs by the id card being scrapped. Take it on the chin as there will be very little you can do about it.

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 19:33

There will be a lot of people out of work for abolishing the hips too. Not that I support them, but I remember when they came out loads of people left their jobs to become surveyors. What a fiasco!

Mind you, it's nothing compared to other countries. Imagine living in Zimbabwe!!

YABU - the Tories didn't exactly make a secret of the fact that they would scrap them. Most papers/polls/general population/the majority of the civil service were making no secret of the fact that it was unlikely that Labour would win the election.

When you made your choice to buy it, did you really think Labour would be the government in power for 10 years?

Sorry, you need to suck up the loss. But then I don't get anyone choosing to spend £60 on something to prove your ID, when you didn't have to and already had a passport that would work just as well. Perhaps I have less spare cash than you, but I could always find better things to spend £60 on...

frakkit · 27/05/2010 19:44

I wanted one. I am very annoyed they've withdrawn it before I could get one!

It could have been handled a lot better - either saying 'ok we aren't issuing any more but they're still valid', or by keeping it on as a voluntary scheme, or by agreeing to offer refunds.

mamatomany · 27/05/2010 19:46

What on earth possessed you to get one, am genuinely interested, I was going to jail before I would have had one under duress.

chicaguapa · 27/05/2010 19:47

Point taken re the imminent election. We knew that too when DH decided to quit his job and train as a teacher. But it was never 100% on the cards who would have got in and we can't put off choices and decisions until after an election. As it turns out DH did the right thing as under the Tories, he wouldn't have even got on a PGCE as he only has a 2:2 and not a First. Which would have been a shame for the teaching profession as he has been getting 'outstanding' grades in his placement and is going to be a great teacher. But that's another thread.

Of course we are very much looking forward to the country being sorted out financially.

BUt people who paid for HIPS needed them.
NO-one needed an ID card. It was voluntary, so sorry, YABU.

TheCrackFox · 27/05/2010 19:55

I really don't understand why someone would voluntarily pay for an ID card.
