Friend says DD looks like a guinea pig

ConDemsUsAll · 27/05/2010 14:19

My friend was looking after my DD last weekend and when I went to pick her up, friend said "oh, me and DH have realised that "Sarah" looks like CandyFloss!"

I was like "who? " so she said "our Guinea pig, CandyFoss, she's the spitting image of her"

I gave a half hearted giggle and went home, complained to DH (who found it funny) and forgot about it. Anyway she keeps bringing it up "What time are you bringing candyfloss around?" and this morning a text "glad the weather is warm again, I've put Sarah and Fudge on the grass" meaning her bloody guinea pigs.

Am I being too sensitive or should I tell her to pack it in?

Indeed you should.

Rude cow.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 27/05/2010 14:21

YANBU. Guinea pigs are hairy rodents. It is not a flattering comparison, IMO. Tell her you saw some roadkill en route to her house and it was so like her you nearly brought it with you.

secunda · 27/05/2010 14:22

It may not necessarily be an insult. Guinea pigs are cute! I can think of a couple of people I think look a little bit like guinea pigs (yes I have thought about this before!) but they are also pretty/handsome.

However, I think she is taking the joke a bit far so YANBU

Thediaryofanobody · 27/05/2010 14:22

She sounds like a bitch would certainly keep your DD from her sounds like she'd give her a complex.

mummag · 27/05/2010 14:23

how harsh!!!! hate things where people think something that is blatantly offensive funny.

Amapoleon · 27/05/2010 14:24

Tell her shove her guinea pigs up her bum! What a cow!

Songbird · 27/05/2010 14:25

YANBU, but I must confess I'm giggling a bit

YellowDaffodil · 27/05/2010 14:26

Have you considered mentioning this womans likeness to another friends bulldog?

I would - but i'm a bitch.

Seriously though is this something she is intending to do to DD as she grows up. Things like this can stick and really hurt girls as they get older and more sensitive about their looks.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2010 14:26

Saying it once is funny and a joke. To keep referring to it is plain rude.

OldMacEIEIO · 27/05/2010 14:39

these creatures eat their own poo. disgusting little rodents

BuzzingNoise · 27/05/2010 14:40

I don't think she means to upset you, but I would be annoyed at it now too. As SoupDragon says, once is funny, but it's going well beyond a joke. Just tell her to stop.
When my DS was a few months old he went through a rather chubby phase and the ILs kept calling him 'sumo'. After a few times I said 'please stop calling him that. He does have a name.' They rolled their eyes but it stopped.

Turniphead1 · 27/05/2010 14:40

She is out of order. YANBU.

Rejessta · 27/05/2010 14:41

It doesn't sound like she means to be mean. She obviously thinks she's being cute and funny and is probably unaware she's getting up your nose. You should find a nice way to let her know the 'joke' is getting a little stale but I wouldn't get upset about it. So, yeah, I understand it's annoying but YABU to take it personally.

chibi · 27/05/2010 14:43

Be honest, tell her that you are offended

if it was not meant hurtfully (hard to believe but some people are really that socially awkward) then she will stop

if it continues drop her

Dramamama · 27/05/2010 14:59

I agree with chibi...
but did just pmsl at chickens post! seriously though how rude! to say it once ok annoying but u wld move on, but to make it a running joke is just cruel!

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 27/05/2010 14:59

I once had a friend who resembled a red squirrel - both being red (headed), very pretty and cuteness incarnate.

I'm not sure if YABU or not tbh. I agree she should let it lie now though.

Chubby little babies do look like Sumo wrestlers, Buzzing. Adorable ones of course. Wouldn't have bothered me at all (as long as they dropped it once ds had started crawling and slimmed down a bit).

It sounds quite funny and cute. I wouldn't want it to become a long running joke but a few laughs are okay.
If your dd is old enough to understand it then I wouldn't like it though.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 27/05/2010 15:05

She's being insensitive. I know a person who looks a bit like Makka Pakka (around the eyes & generally in the proportions of the face ), but would never dream of mentioning it. That would go double if it was someone's child. Not worth hurting feelings just to make a dumb joke.

TartanKnickers · 27/05/2010 15:08

I don't think we can judge without a pic for comparison.

DetectivePotato · 27/05/2010 15:08

YANBU, she is being rude and should shut up now. I hate it when people come out with some 'hilarious' joke and then carry it on and on.

guinea pigs are rather sweet though

chesgirlNOTgriffins · 27/05/2010 15:24

I am a big fan of guinea pigs but I would be getting pretty fed up of the 'joke' by now.

She is being a twonk but clearly doesnt realise. In her mind she is Oscar Wilde.

If you object she will think you are being oversensitive. She sounds like the sort of person who will go on about that for ages too.

Ignore her and it will go away.

I once said 'oh she is such a funny little thing' about someone's granddaughter. I really truely meant it as a cute, nice thing. Granny was not impressed

Theochris · 27/05/2010 15:25

She must be a good friend that you let her mind your daughter, so it is prob meant in fun. She probably loves her guinea pigs and thinks they are really cute and prob doesn't see it as being mean.

I would lightheartedly tell her to "drop it we don't want to give DD a complex" and hopefully she'll take the hint.
