Friend says DD looks like a guinea pig

My friend was looking after my DD last weekend and when I went to pick her up, friend said "oh, me and DH have realised that "Sarah" looks like CandyFloss!"

I was like "who? " so she said "our Guinea pig, CandyFoss, she's the spitting image of her"

I gave a half hearted giggle and went home, complained to DH (who found it funny) and forgot about it. Anyway she keeps bringing it up "What time are you bringing candyfloss around?" and this morning a text "glad the weather is warm again, I've put Sarah and Fudge on the grass" meaning her bloody guinea pigs.

Am I being too sensitive or should I tell her to pack it in?

I think she will stop of her own accord if she doesn't get a reaction out of you.

I once called a friend's DD 'Cookie Monster' because she kept asking for biscuits. Her mum got annoyed and said it would give her daughter a bad self image as monsters were horrible things!

Her Mum's nickname for her DD was 'Fatty'

We used to have a guinea pig who was the spitting image of James May

Rollmops · 27/05/2010 17:14

Why not mention to that weird person that pets usually do look like their owners, pity this is not the case with your rodent. Don't you ever get envious of Candy's good looks!

UndomesticHousewife · 27/05/2010 17:20

Unless you're telling someone their child is the most beautiful thing on the planet it's always best to keep your mouth shut with regards to appearance.

I would actually be quite offended, even if your dd does look like candyfloss (which I'm sure she doesn't)your friend should not be saying it!!

Then again who knows, maybe she loves her guinea pig so much that sh ethinks she's complimenting your dd. But most people have the sense to know that not everyone will see it the same way as she does.

Tell her to stop.

I'd be furious. She is being rude and offensive. I would be hard pressed to not really lay into her myself.

cocolepew · 27/05/2010 17:36

is this her?

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 27/05/2010 17:48

No coco, that's her brother.

cocolepew · 27/05/2010 17:49

sorry I couldn't resist.

Put her straight she is being very rude to keep harping on about it.

MmeLindt · 27/05/2010 17:52

Is she the kind of person who talks about the guinea pigs as if they were her DC?

She probably loves her guinea pigs and thinks that they are soooo cute and means it as a compliment.

What was perhaps a little bit funny the first time is no longer amusing and you should tell her that it upsets you. That you realise she means it in a sweet way, but you would prefer that she finds another nickname for your DD.

GeekOfTheWeek · 27/05/2010 18:13

I would be honest and tell her you find it offensive. Which it is imo.

I would further be inclined to compare her arse with the most adorable shire horse you saw at the country fair. Then start calling her dobbin.

AliGrylls · 27/05/2010 18:17

Maybe she thinks it is a compliment. I mean really one would never say to a good friend something that they considered offensive would they? Some people just give strange compliments.

mamadoc · 27/05/2010 20:16

My DD told my dsis that her baby looked like a little guinea pig but she is only 3 and it is her ultimate compliment because they are her favourite creatures. Still Dsis was not overly amused and I didn't perpetuate it.

Riddo · 27/05/2010 20:41

My friends baby looked exactly like our guinea pig but I didn't say that to her as I think it would have been unecessary and unkind.

I'd tell her that I find it offensive.

DoNotFeedMeBiscuits · 27/05/2010 20:49

My next door neighbour held her cat up over the the fence to see my DD when she was newborn. She then addressed the cat, saying "look, it's nearly as pretty as you puss". . She's a nice lady really, just treats her cats as her children. I was miffed though.

YANBU.

Saying it once is mildly amusing. Saying it again and again because it was mildly amusing the first time is infantile and annoying.
