to think that there is a witch hunt against Andrew Wakefield?

I just can't believe that they're still gunning for this guy!?

Whatever you make of his research, it WAS his research and he found what he found and he should be allowed to "suggest a link"

I have a child on the spectrum who had the MMR and I do not think the MMR had anything to do with it, but I do believe Dr Wakefield that a tiny percentage of people do react very badly to this vaccine.

Leave the guy alone ffs!!

I am no fan of Andrew Wakefield but I DO feel a bit sorry for him. Had the Press not picked up his dodgy reaearch and publicized it without questioning the ethics then it would have died a death and nobody would be any the wiser. The world is full of dodgy research - just read badscience.net for details.

Andrew Wakefield got it wrong but the Press are the real villains in this.

Oh and making jokes about "blood taking" iis not necessarily evidence of a sense of humour (although evidently Andrew Wakefield has a good SOH) but in his case and in this context makes him appear something of a maverick. A shame as he is a very clever man and some of his research when not done in the shoddy manner this one was is excellent.

Interestingly, when DD had an appointment yesterday to investigate her regression (possibly autistic) the respected neurologist was very keen to find out if she had been constipated at the time, leading me to believe that he doesn't think the gut connection is a load of old tripe!!

No the gut connection is most definitely NOT tripe (very good btw). So many parents know this, but they have no collective voice, no collective organisation whose size alone would lend credibility to their claim. Instead they all sit in complete isolation knowing there's a connection but unable to say anything without being labelled stupid, hysterical, a conspiracy theorist or most patronising of all, some body who just can't accept their child's diagnosis.

Leonie I've just watched the video clip of Brian Deer talking to the parent of the child with bowel disease. What an odious little man he is!

And the email response when he completely denied ever saying it when it was said several times on camera, his utterly offensive language calling them malicious and deluded and lacking in integrity and honesty Sickening.

smallones · 26/05/2010 10:30

Could someone explain why some people still suspect a link between MMR and autism?
As far as I am aware, numbers of cases of autism are rising, yet uptake on vaccinations have not risen at the same level? Surely if there was a correlation, the figures would add up?

he patented a single vaccine 10 months before he published that research and THEN he recommended single vaccines??? Unethical conflict of interest

cyberseraphim · 26/05/2010 10:48

Is he the same Michael Gershon who who gave such strong testimony against Wakefield and all forms of vaccine causition at the US Omnibus Cedillo hearing ? I thought that all those expert witnesses could not be relied on as they disagree with Andy?

Well I am puzzled now. If his work on the gut and the brain leads him to denounce Wakefield's work in such strong terms, why are you citing him as your authority ?

Leone, there was a really good article on this in Autism File magazine at the time. I have island my copy temporarily (moved house recently) but I could scan and send when I find if you want? Lots of detail on the case, and an interview with wakefield iirc.

Beachcomber · 26/05/2010 14:02

I know - when you look at all the stuff that has been made up and bandied about as 'proof' that Dr Wakefield is a Very Bad Doctor it is all bullshit and perfectly known to be so by those who propagate these rumours.

The COI is bullshit, the 'rival vaccine' is bullshit, the 'nothing wrong with these children's bowels' is bullshit, the experimenting on children is bullshit.

They just really really do not want people to hear what this man has got to say. They know they cannot find fault with the science so they have gone after the man. By trashing his reputation and censoring his work they are hoping to keep this from the public.

Real shame that a large number of the public are only too happy to help them on their way. I get not a little sick of reading people bay for this man's blood on the basis of utter nonsense.

He won't give up though and neither will the parents. This will come out.

silverfrog · 26/05/2010 14:19

One can only hope so, Beachcomber.

And when it does, I hope he gets an apology. (although ibwont hold my breath!)

Beachcomber · 26/05/2010 14:37

I'm sure it will, in fact I think it is out really already. The fact that scientists are now talking openly about the link between gut disease/autism and vaccines/gut disease in the US speaks volumes.

The UK has still to get with the picture but those who have done wrong and made the mistake of thinking that it could treat children as dispensable are just digging themselves into a bigger and bigger hole now.

They have taken this too far, especially by striking off Professor Walker Smith who is a well known and hugely respected figure in British science. Scientists know this is a warning - if they will do this to Walker Smith they will do it to anybody (and we already know that they care little for the 'collateral damage' of the damaged children). These are ruthless people who have a lot at stake. They don't have as much at stake though as the parents of these very ill children and the doctors who have seen the destruction of their lives. These people have moral right, honour and outrage on their side - much more powerful and enduring than ass covering and greed.

elportodelgato · 26/05/2010 14:38

at anyone offering Wakefield an apology - poor little darling, picked on by the media, shuuned by the GMC, forced to go and make (significant amounts) of money peddling his twaddle to the Americans.

So I sit waiting for the 'truth' to come out. Not holding my breath though.
