AIBU to think weeing in the garden is revolting?

My next-door neighbour's four-year-old boy stands and wees in a corner of their patio - he was doing it all last summer and now that the weather's improved it's clear that he hasn't forgotten about it. I think it's a dreadful and unnecessary habit, especially given that they have a downstairs loo (although we don't, and DS just asks for his potty whenever he needs it). Almost as bad as weeing on the kitchen floor.

i don't think it's as bad as weeing in the house
but it certainly isn't something i encourage my boys to do

tiredlady · 22/05/2010 22:24

Weeing on the patio is indeed revolting.

However I wouldn't mind so much if my DSs did a wee in the flowerbeds. I'd probably shout at them to go inside, but I wouldn't get overly worked up about it.

TheFatOwlOfTheRemove · 22/05/2010 22:25

I let my two do it

I don't see why it is anything like weeing on the kitchen floor

although I do encourage my boys towards the compost heap, it really does help speed up the process

MumInBeds · 22/05/2010 22:25

It's meant to be very good for the compost ... but I'd not let my DCs do it.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 22/05/2010 22:29

I doubt he'll be doing it in a few years time, and is it really causing you any harm?

wonderingwondering · 22/05/2010 22:33

Do you live next door to me....?

I have trained DS to go in the bushes now, though.

Little boys love weeing outside, give yours a year: once he's past the potty and learned to wee standing up....

Notquitegrownup · 22/05/2010 22:36

It's a phase. My ds2, aged 4, would walk past the downstairs loo, through the kitchen and dodge me to go outside on sunny days. I always discouraged it but when he saw the opportunity, he would always take it. He's 6 now and wouldn't dream of weeing outside.

It's unnecessary, yes, but dreadful - well, there are far worse things in life. (And it is highly recommended for clematis, which thrive on the acidic content.)

tiredlady · 22/05/2010 22:44

Our clematis is beauuutiful!

Do I have my boys' wee to thank for that then?

FrameyMcFrame · 22/05/2010 22:47

yabu, all little boys do this, and some girls too, what's the problem?

violethill · 22/05/2010 22:48

Flowerbeds are ok, patio is ugh!

MoneyNoPockets · 22/05/2010 22:49

Unless it is flowing into your garden, let it be.

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 22/05/2010 22:51

I don't actively encourage it, but both DSs and DD seem to revel in a spot of al fresco weeing - although DD prefers the privacy of a large tree. I suspect DH would happily join in if I gave the go-ahead. I despair of my family sometimes - it's like living in a farmyard.

muggglewump · 22/05/2010 22:51

I think it's minging, but then I have a girl, so maybe that colours my judgement?

You go to the toilet, not piss anywhere other than one unless essential, and that should be taught as soon as can be.

Pattertwig · 22/05/2010 22:54

ds never did that - it's gross unless in absolute dire emergency (much like going in the bathroom sink when mummy is on the loo puking and very, very poorly!)

biddysmama · 22/05/2010 22:55

i remember being jealous when i was little cos i couldnt 'wash the cars wheels' for my dad like my little brother could

Lotkinsgonecurly · 22/05/2010 22:56

I have ds who loves alfresco weeing. Helped with potty training, but now 6 we have to insist he goes indoors !

dd (3) refuses point blank to wee outside.

All different, plus think its different when just your family alone in the garden and also the size of garden.

Waltons · 22/05/2010 22:57

Years ago we had a whole load of mums and kids round in the garden on a fabulously hot summer's day. No pool here (not rich enough) but sprinklers going so swim stuff or stark naked if mum forgot the cossie. Kids were all pre-school/reception and I caught DS and a friend, both starkers, having a mutual wee at the edge of a border. The sheepish looks on their faces were the funniest thing ever.

Boys will be be boys.

In France, grown men do it in full view at the side of the road. Now that IS something I have a problem with!

Pancakeflipper · 22/05/2010 23:00

I found a small crowd of small boys weeing on my compost heap earlier today. One was my ES.

I live at a similiar farm to MaiseTMCat.

bamboo · 22/05/2010 23:10

I gave ds1 (4) a right rollicking yesterday as he was about pee in the herbaceous border! I feel a bit guilty now, didn't realise it was a bit of a boy thing! Still wouldn't let him do it regularly though, so YANBU.

bran · 22/05/2010 23:12

It could be worse. Here

Willabywallaby · 22/05/2010 23:19

Men just love to wee outside, and it starts young.

My DH's Mum and Auntie let DS wee outside, it's a habit I try to discourage.

But did let him do one in the corner of the playground (bushes) the other day, the walk to the toilets would take far too long with toddler in tow and no pushchair. He was doing the 'bladder about to pop' dance.

BloomingFlowers · 22/05/2010 23:23

I try to get my DH to wee in my compost.

Once or twice would be nice.

No amount of encouragement, tickling, coaxing has made it happen.

ttalloo · 22/05/2010 23:27

bran, I nearly wee-ed myself laughing at your DS's antics; yes, it could be so much worse!

Last year next door's boy was weeing against our fence, and we'd find little patches of wee on our patio, which I didn't appreciate, especially as my two were always rushing over to see what he was doing; it was, according to his proud parents, his favourite place to wee. As long as he doesn't wee against our fence I don't much care what he does in his own garden, but it simply isn't something that I would allow my DCs to do.

I was just wondering if it is something that comes with boys, or is just one of those things like sitting on public loo seats, or never doing a number two anywhere other than at home, that some people think is fine, and others don't.
