To Want a "Let Boys Be Boys" campaign too?

I totally agree with MN's campaign but think boys should have someone to back them up too. I'm fed up of slogans on t-shirts alluding to boys' bad behaviour ("Whatever" "I've Got a Bad Attitude") and boys' things generally - I'm a monster, I'm a monkey, I'm a little shit (ok, I made that last one up). My son is sweet, kind, sensitive, intelligent, articulate and generally lovely. Why can't I buy something for him that's a positive message (I can buy any number of "Little Princess" type, fluffy bunny, angel, sweet stuff for dd if I choose)? There's a niche in the market here...

straits.

biddysmama · 18/05/2010 15:07

ds has "i save water, i dont wash" " i cant help you now i'm stuck to the sofa" "mud is good" " i'm not deliberately being difficult, i'm just good at it"

dd "its all about me" " stuff the football, i'm going shopping" " i love my mummy"

i saw the "all daddy wanted was a blow job" ones and i think thats pretty low... but asdas "it started with a kiss was a bit sweet, would make me loaugh over a baby bump, when [pregnant with ds i had one that said "boys tell lies"

cupcakesandbunting · 18/05/2010 15:08

I think some Mumsnetty slogans would be;

"Breastfed and Brilliant"

"My Boden T-Shirt Is The Wash"

"I'm A Little Individual"

"I Led The Weaning"

biddysmama · 18/05/2010 15:11

" yes i'm 4 months old, no i dont need any solids"

cupcakesandbunting · 18/05/2010 15:20

"D1ddy's Little Man (but also mummy's because everything is equally shared)"

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 18/05/2010 15:20

Hmm, interesting thread. I don't think YABU and agree that the slogans encouraging negative stereotypes are vile. However I think that the Let girls be girls campaign is aimed at the more specific problem of sexualising little girls and making them grow up too quickly, which is more of a problem IMO.

I actually think there are loads of nice clothes around for little boys- ds is only 10 months and I keep seeing nice things for toddlers+ that they don't make in baby sizes.

I also agree with the posters who say that not all slogans are bad- ds was bought some slogan tshirts by his gps saying things like 'little but loud' (which is v accurate) and 'mummy's little charmer'. I wouldn't choose them myself but don't mind dressing him in them at all.

*daddys, fgs...

BouncingTurtle · 18/05/2010 15:21

I saw a 10/11 yo on Saturday wearing a t-shirt with the slogan "I've had your mum"

I agree it needs to be "Let kids be kids"!

biddysmama · 18/05/2010 15:23

" do i look like she's starving me?"

"jars arent real food"

(thats for my nana who kept asking when i was gunna give her real baby food... not just what we were eating)

ParanoidAtAllTimes · 18/05/2010 15:26

"mummy's mning again "

fruitstick · 18/05/2010 15:26

"Take me to Gregg's"

"Not contented but happy"

"Control Cry this!"

fruitstick · 18/05/2010 15:26

or maybe just

DS1
DS2
DD1
DD2

Why should boys be indoctrinated towards football (yaaaaawn) and being 'bad'?

My son (3.5) loves what he calls racing cars (though this covers everything from Formula 1 to a 19 yo in a Corsa). However, his favourite item of clothing is his Gruffalo T shirt.

Oh, and his Mr Men pants. DW and I were much amused to discover that there is a pair for each day of the week. Monday is Mr Grumpy - perfect!

What I really don't like is boys & guns. Yes, I had a fine armoury in the 70s, and yes I turned out fine - but there's something just a bit Redneck about teaching kids to run around shooting each other, donchafink?

fruitstick · 18/05/2010 15:32

Adman it's true and I think guns have been discussed before on here.

The fact of the matter is that boys, if so inclined, will make guns out of sticks, lego, coathangers, anything going. Obviously that's not an argument to buy them an accurate replica or hope they turn into Ross Kemp but is a fact of life.

My son is ridiculously violentand blood thirsty with his knight's outfit but it's OK because the sword has English Heritage written on it

But he does have a Gruffalo T shirt too so that's OK.

of the gruffalo T-Shirts - are they nice (and where do they come from)? I might get one for DD...

A (male) colleague and I were discussing the other day whether a gruffalo trunki would be a viable option for business travel

oldandgreynow · 18/05/2010 16:28

I find it very hard to belieie you can't find a T shirt etc for any interest/sport/hobby that exists!

Completely agree - with the boys clothing it's just a matter of peoples taste. And each to their own.

Rollmops · 18/05/2010 18:54

Where do I sign up? The most sensible thing on these revered pages since, well, beginning!

Takver · 18/05/2010 19:08

OtterinaSkoda, I'm sorry, but I have to ask this. WHERE do you get the 'Weapon of Mess & Destruction' T-shirt from??? I have googled & failed to find (it would be for a girl - is that ok )

OtterInaSkoda · 19/05/2010 12:37

I think my friend bought it from a shop in Bath - I'll have to Google.

it did suit her

OtterInaSkoda · 19/05/2010 12:40

There ya go Takver

mummyinthevalley · 19/05/2010 12:56

completely agree, did contact MN about this as whilst I agree boys aren't being targeted with padded bikinis, so much of boys fashion aims at making them look like mini gang members or rappers Don't want my DS to look like either!

All so dull etc etc etc tho have recently come across www.guycollection.co.uk, colourful range, like their ethos and when I ordered everything arrived quickly plus they do free returns worth a look...
