to not like breakfast in bed

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 18/05/2010 10:06

I really, really don't even when ill I don't like eating in bed, you have to sit up properly and move all the pillows and then it's not comfy and if anything gets spilled the bed gets dirty and crumby and ick.

It's my birthday this weekend and DD1 is 4 so it's the firts borthday she has been able to get involved in.
She is insistent that I should have cereal and toast in bed in the morning whereas I want to be left TF alone until I wake up and then I will have breakfast on the sofa or the table.

I HATE breakfast in bed! PLease tell me I'm not alone!

You're not alone, I HATE it too.. BUT, aww, how sweet that your DD wants to do that for you..

Can't you convince her that it would be lovely to come down to a "surprise" breakfast waiting on the table?

Poledra · 18/05/2010 10:12

Nope, I hate it too. Love a cup of tea in bed, usually at night-time, but eating toast in bed - no thanks!!

Can't DH convince her that a special breakfast (croissants, fry-up, whatever floats you boat) ready for you when you get up is better? Flowers on the table, cards ready to open and so on??

BreevandercampLGJ · 18/05/2010 10:12

I am not mad about it, but you need to look at the bigger picture.

I have been with my DH forever, and every year on my birthday he gets up early and makes me brown bread from scratch(no bread maker) then when it is cooked he brings it up on a tray with smoked salmon and champagne. After so long it is actually starting to wear a bit thin, but when I said this to my sis she asked me if I was aware of what a fab role model he was being for our 9 year old son.

I hadn't thought about it like that, but she is right.

So I am sorry but I think you just have to roll with the punches on this one.

BallpointPen · 18/05/2010 10:14

YANBU or alone, I dislike eating in bed too, I don't like a hot drink in bed either. I want to get up, go for a pee and come downstairs before I consume anything.

My DD has the same idea as yours but for mothers day rather than birthdays. I humoured her. When you have children your own wishes, even on your own birthday, take second place to theirs.

TheCrackFox · 18/05/2010 10:15

I hate it too - the crumbs get everywhere which means I have to change the bloody bed. But, hey, if it keeps the DCs happy then it is worth the pain. You will just have o grin and bear it. In ten years time she won't be that excited about your birthday.

My kids are great at organising a wonderfully decorated table. What about asking your dd to put a pretty cloth on the table, some daisies in an eggcup, make you a picture menu etc etc? The glitter and sequins come out in our house but you might not want to go that far!

If you keep mentioning the table and tell her that mummy doesn't really like breakfast in bed, she'll get used to the idea.

How lovely that she wants to do something like this for you.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 18/05/2010 10:25

I know, it's so sweet and she is insistent that that is what I want (despite me insisting it isn't) so I will succumba nd let her bring me some cereal (i dont have toast anyway)

I just find it duuuuull, you can't read while eating breakfast in bed as you have to balance the food, and you can't watch telly (I don't have on in my room) so you have to sit there, in silence, while you eat your breakfast, and then I am awake.

I am going to lock the door anyway, DH is going to take thme out to tesco to get me a present (he is working until then so that's his first chance to take them) and then we have said she can make lunch for us all.

Yes, I'm a cow, but I really don't want it!

" After so long it is actually starting to wear a bit thin, "

Send him over here then, I could do with it

BreevandercampLGJ · 18/05/2010 10:39

I can't.

He loads the dishwasher, he does the laundry, and he does the weekly shop on a Saturday.

Oh and did I mention that he does all the cooking at weekends.

Fibilou · 18/05/2010 10:51

Mine just works. All the time

BreevandercampLGJ · 18/05/2010 11:02

Oh he does that as well, he does an 11 hour day including his commute. I do lots around the house as well, but he is of that rare breed that if he sees it needs doing he will do it.

I am a very lucky girl.

OrmRenewed · 18/05/2010 11:03

I agree. Would rather just have a cuppa and then go downstairs to eat in comfort.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 18/05/2010 11:09

Thanks those who agree, it's just not as nice as all the stupid adverts make out!

I just don't get it either! Why would you want to eat in bed? Seems so slovenly. I really, really don't get it.

flaime · 18/05/2010 11:18

We have breakfast in bed every sunday. The kids snuggle up with us and we all have our drinks and waffles with toffee sauce on.

So what if I go to bed on sunday night to find it full of crumbs? Kids aren't kids for that long and all too soon they will be too old to want to do it so I'm going to enjoy it whilst it lasts!

tots2ten · 18/05/2010 11:23

When dh is off on the weekend I have a lie in saturday morning, and I get breakfast in bed, we dont get crumbs in bed though as I strip all the bedding on saturdays anyway.

Not had a lie in for weeks though as my sister is staying with us

Shodan · 18/05/2010 11:32

I have to have breakfast in bed on my birthday.

Weak tea, toast with the butter and marmite or marmalade in a splodge in the middle, dry edges.

Bleugh Yum.

seeker · 18/05/2010 11:36

I hate it too! And I'm an early riser, so on my birthday and Mother's Day, I have to go back to bed to have breakfast brought to me.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 18/05/2010 13:00

tots, aren't you oragnised

I am NOT stripping beds and doing washing on my birthday.
Last time DH tried to change the bed he put the duvet cover on inside out and the wrong pillowcases (as in green stripy ones with a purple duvet, christ knows how he managed that) and then tried to pretend that that was okay

stealthsquiggle · 18/05/2010 13:06

You are not alone. I hate breakfast in bed. Can't you get DH to help convince her that they should make a lovely breakfast downstairs for Mummy and make the table all pretty? You are not going to get left until you wake, realistically, but at least you might get a bit of a lie-in and a nice breakfast downstairs?

5Foot5 · 18/05/2010 13:11

I don't hate it but I find it a bit lonely, I would rather have breakfast with DH and DD.

However, for DDs sake I would say either grin and bear it or compromise and say how you would love to be woken up with a cup of tea but will come down afterwards for breakfast.

My DD used to have plastic play food and would regularly bring pretend breakfasts to us or visitors until well after she started school.

mrspear · 18/05/2010 13:16

My DH won't even drink in bed let alone eat. It's a pity i would sit all snuggled with a cuppa and discuss the day ahead

GiraffeYoga · 18/05/2010 13:23

Its lovely go with it- its a one off!

Im shocked at those of you have time to strip beds for a few crumbs! Shake the duvet, brush them off with your hands and hoover if you must!

Life is tooooo short!

tots2ten · 18/05/2010 14:12

HA HA just re-read the op, and realised who you are

I'm very organised not

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 18/05/2010 14:26

Did you not click tots? That's so funny.

But breakfast in bed is still dull and messy.
