I know, I know, I am used to the continental warmer weather but I still find it really sweet when my parents go, "Oooooh, it is going to be 19°C on Thursday, that is really hot".

We will still be wearing cardigans until it is well over 20°C, while the Brits are in their strappy tops and bikinis.

is pissing down here. Anything other than pissing down would be good.

SloanyPony · 16/05/2010 20:07

The UK weather presenters only have one word for hot day and that is "scorching". This basically encompasses anything from 21 degrees to 40 degrees.

seb1 · 16/05/2010 20:13

Look compared to 9degC last week it is positively soaring.

MmeLindt · 16/05/2010 20:15

True, Jamie. Has been raining a lot here too. Mum has only got summer clothes with her cause she is on her summer holiday.

She was freezing yesterday.

Saw a Brit today in Morzine with flip flops on. It was only about 5°C. Brrr

We had frosts last week. Got my beans and potatoes. 23C will be tropical.

Ripeberry · 16/05/2010 20:21

Scorchio! lol!

AnyFucker · 16/05/2010 20:23

I cannot wait for 23 deg

I don't think we will get 23 here though...am just hoping for about 18 deg, tbh

CatIsSleepy · 16/05/2010 20:25

i am so ready for some nice weather
I've painted my toenails and everything in readiness

PussinJimmyChoos · 16/05/2010 20:27

I came back from Syria last week...was 26 on one day and I was telling them oh this is a heatwave in England, beach weather etc and they said but its just spring temperatures for us!

AnyFucker · 16/05/2010 20:29

I just wanna wear my flip-flops !!....waaaahhhhh

TheCrackFox · 16/05/2010 20:29

I live in Scotland and dream of the temperature reaching the dizzying heights of 23c.

MmeLindt · 16/05/2010 20:40

Hot is for me 28 - 30°C.

Really hot is over 30°C.

Scorching is 35°C+

19°C is pleasant. Don't start wearing cropped trousers until over 22°C

Where are you from MmeLindt - I'm guessing France?

What I want to know is why UK gets such crappy weather...I mean France actually gets proper summers....but not UK!!

ljgibbs · 16/05/2010 20:50

Woah! 23 degrees. Must get hair removal stuff out from back of wardrobe, where it got shoved last year and paint my toenails ready for the flip flops

Alouiseg · 16/05/2010 20:52

The white linen trousers will be out in force then

echt · 16/05/2010 21:15

I hate it when smug Continentals/Aussies/anywhere warm carry on like the OP, tittering at the Brits for getting a bit excited about the warm. It IS really hot when it's all you're used to.

It's probably why I loved the Kiwis when there briefly; like the Brits they followed the sun round, and any more lengthy shows meant the whole town decamped to the beach.

As you can probably tell, I'm a little wearied by Aussies who rehearse these interesting perspectives whenever they hear of this.

MmeLindt · 16/05/2010 21:22

echt
It is a light hearted thread. I am not meaning to cause offence but when you have been away from UK for as long as I have you notice the little idiosyncrasies of the Brits more. It is one of the things I love about UK, along with our obsession with queues and saying sorry when someone stands on our toes.

Point taken, though when I get it in the ear over here, it's always a joke too; though as you're plainly one of us, you're allowed.

letsblowthistacostand · 16/05/2010 22:05

LOL. I grew up in southern california. We call 18deg COLD. My dad wore his coat in the house the entire time he visited. IN JULY.

I kind of like the weather here, though. It's never really too hot or too cold to go out, but it gets warm enough to wear sandals. What's not to like?

AnyFucker · 16/05/2010 22:08

sandals ?

about 3 times a year...

Ozziegirly · 17/05/2010 00:23

DH and I were wondering just yesterday if we came back to the UK how long it would take us to re-acclimatise to feeling that 23 is hot, as after only living in Oz for 3 years, I am basically in a cardigan and tights until it reaches about 28.

It's weird because I know that I don't feel warm when it's in the early 20s here, even though when I lived in the UK, I would also have been in a vest top as soon as it hit 20.

MmeLindt · 17/05/2010 00:35

Absolutely, Ozzie. I can remember after just a few years in Germany going home to visit my parents, and sitting in the garden wearing jeans and a woolly jumper while my cousins wore strappy tops and shorts.

I wonder if we would get used to it if we moved back home.

OP posts:
ClaudiaSchiffer · 17/05/2010 00:53

Yesterday it was 21 degrees here.

We had the fire on.

I have totally acclimatised. I used to think that 24 was a really really hot day and get all hot and bothered. Now 24 is pleasantly mild.

ben5 · 17/05/2010 02:15

have jumper and jeans on today and boys have long trousers and jumpers on. they say it'll be 24 today! yeap in oz to and have been here for less than a year but after a summer of not seeing rain and temp not going below 30, 24 is cold!
