to turn over the Daily Star on supermarket shelves so the picture on the front can't be seen?

I'm so sick of seeing barely dressed girls in provocative poses. I'm not bothered that men want to look at it and it's really non of my business, and it was the girl's choice (however miguided I might think it is) to pose and be paid for the photos.

But I really am uncomfortable with them being around on general display for my young children to see. So, everytime I go past one now I have started to turn the top copy of the pile over so it can't be seen.

YANBU
Direct action! My dad does this

cupcakesandbunting · 13/05/2010 13:27

YANBU. It's tasteless if nothing else and it should be kept nearer the top with the other wank mags gentlemen's publications.

jellybeans · 13/05/2010 13:31

YANBU they should be sold in adult shops or wrapped up. Sick of kids seeing them when shopping. Page 3 should be scrapped too!

redhappy · 13/05/2010 19:53

Maybe it's the daily sport I mean?
Or are they pretty much interchangeable?

Anyway, todays pic of a girl in red lacy underwear with her legs open pushed it too far for me!!

Are there any campaigns or anything already happening? or do I need to start my own?

poppymouse · 13/05/2010 20:23

I noticed that same one today and had the exact same thoughts. YADNBU.

MoonFaceMama · 13/05/2010 21:01

Yanbu. I'd back campaign. Sick of pornification of society and objectification of girls. It's patronising to men too...most of them any way and who cares about those to whom it isn't patronising!?

parakeet · 13/05/2010 22:02

Let's all do it!

Mouseface · 13/05/2010 22:04

YADDDDDDDNBU

Can you imagine the uproar if we had semi naked, hot bodied men on the front of newspapers.

See, that's my other issue - NEWSPAPERS fgs.

Not shagpapers.

redhappy · 14/05/2010 08:13

Ok, well let's go grassroots for now? Everybody do this too, ask your friends and family to do the same.

Think the reduction in sales should send a clear message!

msVal · 14/05/2010 08:30

Totally totally reasonable! I posted about this a while ago - asked my newsagent to move the Sport to a higher shelf or cover it a bit (like the suggested guidelines for newsagents say) and he refused very nastily. Haven't been back in his shop since and encourage my friends not to go there either.

There was a motion in parliament about this before Christmas and there is a group called Object who have more suggestions about other kinds of legal direct action like putting the Sport inside a paper bag, or bringing all the papers up to the counter and asking to see the manager to make a complaint.

Turning them round is a great plan!

maria1665 · 14/05/2010 08:52

You are not being unreasonable. You are being fantastic.

When I was at work, if working late I used to remove copies of Loaded and Zoo and place them in the confidential waste. (I worked in a public office staffed by those supposedly protecting the public.) Since my maternity break, I am been left impotent.

But this is genius. I am going to start today. It breaks my heart that my eldest daughter on the verge of woman hood is faced with these images whenever she goes to the shops for some sweets.

redhappy · 14/05/2010 10:12

I'm so glad I'm not on my own on this one.

I kind of knew I would'nt be, but I suppose I expected a few people to say I was being uptight.

Inpires me to go further actually. I had an idea last year to create a magazine for young girls (7/8 - 12 I suppose, maybe there's a need for even younger too [] ) that DID'NT involve boys, makeup, fashion...spunds like there's probably a market out there for this, with the parents at least!

OP posts:
maria1665 · 14/05/2010 10:39

Yes! re the magazine for girls. I remember Bunty, and the Brownie and Guide magazines when I was growing up.

I tried my hand at setting up a website Cookingforgirls.co.uk which was cooking and stories about girls setting up a cafe in their garage. Just a hobby thing really, set up by my husband to get me writing.

But the response we got was great, from USA and Canada as well as from UK. We were top of the google rankings for a good six months or so. My daughters friends all liked it. Life's got in the way since Christmas and I haven't get it up. But there is definitely a gap in the market.

Earthymama · 14/05/2010 10:46

You are a superstar, I do this too!
Here's the Object campaign.

Violet5 · 14/05/2010 10:56

I am a mum to 3 girls and i always turn them over.
The Sun with its page 3, and a lot of its other 'articles', the Star, the Sport ALL tacky outdated tat.
My husband buys it at work and thats where i make him leave it. He actually has a job where a lot of intelligence is required too, and then sits and looks at the picture book of boobs and bums(the Sun) in his lunch break, just makes men look cheap and sad in my mind.

msVal · 14/05/2010 11:27

Maria your website is great! I can't help myself from pointing out a typo - in the first story 'But whose gonna come' should be 'But who's gonna come'. Sorry, can't help myself! It's like a disease Keep up the good work

redhappy · 14/05/2010 11:32

maria that website is great well done to you and your dp for being proactive! I have lots of ideas but it's been difficult to make them happen, but now I have 2 young children, rather than 2 babies, more seems possible now I loved Bunty, although it was oldfashioned then (80s) and my mum bought it for me for the same reasons we are talking about here. If you want to get in touch my email is [email protected]. Be interesting to swap ideas?

Thanks for the link earthymama , will have a proper look later and see if there's anything already happening in my area.

mangoandlime · 14/05/2010 12:10

Maria, I really wanted to have a look at your 'Cooking for Boys' site but unfortunately the link doesn't work.

Looks great.

Downdog · 14/05/2010 12:41

YANBU - you are being YAY!!!!!!!!!!
Good going.

fyimate · 14/05/2010 12:50

I think that's a good idea, redhappy.
I'm sick of all these make up mags for little girls. They even sell those lellykelly shoes with make up!
And no wonder young girls are obsessed with their weight, it's plastered all over EVERY womans mag out there! I'm sick to death with weight this and weight that, I'm glad my DP tells me he loves me as I am and if anything prefers me as I am than to be a stick insect!
In terms of the naked "women" on these mags, I hate it but luckily my DDs only small so doesnt see them YET...I think if I made a reaction she would notice so I ignore it and move on.
I get annoyed enough at my DP for the images he has on his PC...

cyb · 14/05/2010 12:51

I do this all the time In ASda. Turn over Zoo, nuts, loaded, anything revolting like that. I move them and hide them behind other magazines too

sethstarkaddersmum · 14/05/2010 12:52

There's the Front Page Campaign, as well as Object which EarthyMama linked to.

You know, as a feminist who is concerned about these issues it makes me very happy that people who are not necessarily into the theory/politics of feminism have arrived at the same conclusions. It is easy for feminists to talk amongst themselves a lot and end up a bit out of touch so it's nice to see more proof that this is a real issue for a lot of people.

If anyone wants to come over to the feminism threads where there is always lots of discussion about these things, you would be very welcome You don't have to be a feminist to post there (though I admit sometimes we are a bit rude to people when they keep being sexist).

Hurrah for RedHappy and Eric's dad.

SixtyFootDoll · 14/05/2010 12:53

OP
YANBU

I am going to start doing the same.

asdx2 · 14/05/2010 12:58

YANBU I do exactly the same Think there must be an army of mums out there doing similar.
