to turn over the Daily Star on supermarket shelves so the picture on the front can't be seen?

I'm so sick of seeing barely dressed girls in provocative poses. I'm not bothered that men want to look at it and it's really non of my business, and it was the girl's choice (however miguided I might think it is) to pose and be paid for the photos.

But I really am uncomfortable with them being around on general display for my young children to see. So, everytime I go past one now I have started to turn the top copy of the pile over so it can't be seen.

YANBU in any way. I regularly turn over the wankmag lad mags (Front, Zoo, Nuts etc.) in any shop I enter that sells them. I should start turning over the tabloids as well.

In fact, I also think I should start turning over the vile Pick Me Up-type rags and the godawful sleb mags, since these are just as guilty of peddling dangerous myths and messages to people. The sleb mags are constantly on about weight, as someone said, and also frequently have covers that scream about MARRIAGES IN TROUBLE!!! with pictures and sublines that make it out to be entirely the woman's responsibility to sort it out by getting thinner/fatter/more busy/less busy/more popular/less popular. And Pick Me Up etc. are just dreadful, voyeuristic shite. I don't want to be confronted by headlines like 'My baby was beheaded! Raped and murdered at only 13...' every time I nip out for a pint of milk.

The media culture in this country is sick.

Hooray for me.

Have just come back from the newsagents, having successfully turned over the Daily Star (front page featuring usual photograph of knickers and crotch of girl getting out of car.) I am feeling very empowered.

Not being a natural protester, I had to buy a copy of The Independent and a packet of tissues to cover my tracks. So newsagent is up on the deal financially.

But the important thing is - this is my first ever actual of civil disobedience and it feels GOOD.

Redhappy - thanks for your post re ideas for mag. That sounds great. Will be in touch. (Sadly Monday is the day I am supposed to clean my house .)
