I have complained to my DD1's school as she sustained an injury after being disciplined at school. She is 9yo.

Admittedly, it is a minor injury but I don't think that any school punishment should physically hurt a child.

Anyway, after complaining to the Head who verbally agreed that it was unfortunate that DD was hurt, he has written a follow-up letter stating that the punishment was 'fair and appropriate'.

Although I don't agree with this, I don't know whether to leave it at that and accept that they will behave in a sensible way in the future or whether to escalate this to governors?

Since the incident my DD has been treated really nicely at school but the 'human rights' campaigner in me feels the school should be made accountable for continuing a punishment after DD complained she was hurt

I'm also not sure what the Governor's can do in this instance. It is a private school so I cannot ask OFSTED for advice.

Any thoughts??

Depends what exactly happened...

withorwithoutyou · 10/05/2010 13:54

What was the punishment and what was the injury?

Impossible to say without knowing what the punishment was. If it was something like making her sit in a corner and she fell of her chair then YABU, if they caned her or something then WTF kind of school is it?

tethersend · 10/05/2010 13:56

Can you give details?

There is legislation which covers whether or not physical intervention is appropriate.

What did your DD do?
What was the punishment?
How was she hurt?

scrap · 10/05/2010 13:57

Sorry - she was asked to do chores at school and managed to cut herself but instead of sending her to the nurse, the teacher told her to continue with the chores....

what happened? Any school should act in loco parentis so they have to care for your child as well as educate them.

Is this the pencil sharpening story or I am thinking of something else?

atworknotworking · 10/05/2010 14:01

Come on scrap lets av the full low down.

What did she do?

What exactly was the punishment?

How bad was the injury?

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 10/05/2010 14:02

depends if it was a cut cut and bleeding or just a tiny scrape and whether or not she was given something dangerous or something that it could reasonably be considered unsafe for a child of her age to use. I wouldn't think it unreasonable to get her to carry on if it was just a tiny thing.

annh · 10/05/2010 14:03

Why are we being drip fed information if you are asking for thoughts on the subject? If she managed to give herself a paper cut stacking books then YABU, if she has strained her back hauling around furniture then maybe you have a case!

Deja vu - this is the pencil sharpening one from a couple of months ago isn't it. Why a new thread?

Child asked to stay behind and sharpen pencils as punishment.

OrmRenewed · 10/05/2010 14:05

Bloody hell! This is like pulling teeth

Ooh they didn't do that did they?......

florence2511 · 10/05/2010 14:05

I remember this one...

The DD did something wrong so was asked to sharpen pencils as a punishment.

YABVVVVU

Most people thought you were last time aswell.

scrap · 10/05/2010 14:05

Give us a chance - got a crying baby on one hip

She was asked to cut pieces of felt and paper for art prep. Not that concerned about the punishment really, more concerned about 'bloody' finger and being told to carry on cutting things up!

Pass me some of those pencils - don't want you cutting yourself with the sharpener, or getting a blister, do we?

here This one?

BettySuarez · 10/05/2010 14:08

How bad was the cut?

Was your daughetr traumatised by the experience, or essentially OK?

DumpyOldWoman · 10/05/2010 14:08

If it was a really deep cut / needed stitches / made her cry a lot and was extremely painful, YANBU.
If it was a little cut, YABU.

scrap · 10/05/2010 14:09

Then it's not really an issue then, if she is normally allowed to use scissors at school. She has contributed to her injury by not using the scissors properly. Doesn't warrant any further investigation
