I have complained to my DD1's school as she sustained an injury after being disciplined at school. She is 9yo.

Admittedly, it is a minor injury but I don't think that any school punishment should physically hurt a child.

Anyway, after complaining to the Head who verbally agreed that it was unfortunate that DD was hurt, he has written a follow-up letter stating that the punishment was 'fair and appropriate'.

Although I don't agree with this, I don't know whether to leave it at that and accept that they will behave in a sensible way in the future or whether to escalate this to governors?

Since the incident my DD has been treated really nicely at school but the 'human rights' campaigner in me feels the school should be made accountable for continuing a punishment after DD complained she was hurt

I'm also not sure what the Governor's can do in this instance. It is a private school so I cannot ask OFSTED for advice.

Any thoughts??

DD thought punishment was quite fun really
Not sure how much of a deterrent it was but just think standing her in the corner's easier....!

What do you hope to achieve by taking this to the governers?

Your daughter was fairly punished for misbehaving in class and just happenned to sustain a minor cut whilst carrying out her task.

I think that you are over reacting BIG TIME!

seeker · 10/05/2010 14:13

So if she hadn't been being punished but was being allowed to help the teacher get the art supplies ready for a treat and she had cut herself would you still be complaining?

good point seeker - i wouldn't be complaining then.

This is why MN is good - I feel like a nonce now

Total overeaction IMO. As was said on the original thread, she was punished, it wasnt barbaric but she sustained a small cut as she could have done sharpening pencils at home. Cannot see any reason to take it any further, it wasnt the cane ffs.

oldernowiser · 10/05/2010 14:19

And we wonder why teachers get stressed! FFS, the kid did something wrong, told to do something useful to make ammends, nipped herself with scissors and needed a plaster, and you're moaning about human rights!

Let the head and governors get on with their jobs and stop undermining them and wasting their time.

BrokenBananaTantrum · 10/05/2010 14:24

don't feel like a nonce

MN is here to help us normalise our thinking

libelulle · 10/05/2010 16:28

Redredwine and others - this is not a thread about pencil sharpening. There may have been an overreaction in this case too (though to be honest it seems a bit off that the DD wasn't given a plaster straightaway to me...), but it doesn't seem very fair to this poor OP to assume she's ressurected an old thread when she's actually made it very clear in follow-up posts that this is a different situation.

scurryfunge · 10/05/2010 16:31

I think scrap has already let it go and not challenged any further remarks about pencils...people have drawn their own conclusions

Downdog · 10/05/2010 16:36

it's a non-issue - but it seems that has already been established.

But this thread was a bloody great laugh out loud read!

Cheers - you are in top form today oh wise ones

piscesmoon · 10/05/2010 16:37

I never understand why people continue to pay for something they don't like! Either the school has good points that completely override it or you move them. You are paying for it!

Downdog · 10/05/2010 16:37

"this is not a thread about pencil sharpening" ROTFLMAO

Lonnie · 10/05/2010 16:47

Ok I would write a letter bacck to the head and state that whilst you agree that the punishment was appropriate the behaviour displayed by the adults in charge when your child was injured were not and for this you expect acknowledgement.

then I would leave it and next time you post explain ALLLL of it in op heh
