Isn't it?

OP posts:
violethill · 10/05/2010 12:17

Why?

RooBear · 10/05/2010 12:17

I would say so but I'm against fizzy drinks anyway!

In a bedtime bottle, definitely wrong. At a birthday party, no problem.

toccatanfudge · 10/05/2010 12:18

depends in what context really.

DS1 and 2 at 5 and 2 drank nothing but fizzy drinks and tea for 3 weeks..........but we were on holiday in Zimbabwe

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 12:20

An occasional (small) glass would be ok, not on a regular occurance.

PlumBumMum · 10/05/2010 12:20

I'm not a fan of fizzy drinks but my dcs are allowed them as a one off treat, now and again

But DIET drinks are a definite NO NO in this house

DumpyOldWoman · 10/05/2010 12:20

With rum, definitely.

As an occasional drink at parties or at Pizza Express, it's just sugar, water and carbon-dioxide. So what?

Ivykaty44 · 10/05/2010 12:20

We have it here on high days and holidays only...I would say everythng in moderation but it really shouldn't be drunk more often as the leeching from the bones etc could have an adverse effect on a childs growth

seeker · 10/05/2010 12:21

For breakfast - no.

As a treat - no problem.

Smithagain · 10/05/2010 12:21

At a party, or on a regular basis?

Personally speaking, not a problem for a 5 or 6yo to have a fizzy drink, on a special occasion. Particularly when all the grown-ups are likely to be drinking things that are not entirely healthy for them!

3yo probably better distracted onto something else.

On a daily basis, not a good habit to get into.

Tidey · 10/05/2010 12:22

Neither of mine are allowed it (aged 8 and 2) but a small amount every now and then doesn't sound so bad. 3 sounds very young to be given caffeine and sugary drinks to me, but that might be completely unfounded.

BallpointPen · 10/05/2010 12:22

As treats=fine. As a daily tipple=not fine.

anonymousbird · 10/05/2010 12:22

In any context, well almost any. Not party scenario - that is more difficult, because if all DC's having then hard to avoid. (But shd not be served at a party for 5yo's in ANY circumstances)! But if parents giving it to their DC's when numerous other less toxic drinks available, and no pressure of party situation, then I just don't get it.

tootyflooty · 10/05/2010 12:22

the 3 year old def not, the 5 and 6 year old at a party as a rare treat ok, can't see why any one would want to introduce fizzy drinks until absolutly necessary. I still restrict them for my 12 year olds, and don't buy them for home unless we have guests / a party, I love coke but still wouldn't drink it regulary myself as it's not a heathy drink to have too often.

runnybottom · 10/05/2010 12:23

If they're your children, you can decide if its wrong or not. For mine, and everyone elses, MYOB.

DanJARMouse · 10/05/2010 12:23

not a problem once in a while.

Since moving to scotland, DS (2yrs 6mnths) has decided he loves Irn Bru..... well he gets a sip probably 2 or 3 times a week, and thats all it is, a sip!

The girls (4 and 5) dont ask for fizzy drinks, but I know they are partial to lemonade. I just dont buy it.

Every day, numerous times a day - no, deffo not.

misdee · 10/05/2010 12:24

not wrong at all.

as long as its not daily, not in a baby bottle, and not before bedtime or with breakfast.

with a meal, out on a hot summers day served cold with ice, or a birthday party then fine.

OTTMummA · 10/05/2010 12:24

i was never allowed fizzy drinks as a child and now am addicted to at least 2 lts a day, everything in moderation IMO, so as a daily occurance yes, unreasonable, every now and then, not a problem, and actually gives them a healthy attitude to certain foods/drinks etc tbh.

I don't genenerally let my DS's drink fizzy drinks........but tbh I find it hard to get upset over it really, having lived for 2 1/2yrs in a country where the staple "diet" of drinks was tea and fizzy drinks (tap water not safe to drink and bottle water horrendously expensive) where babies go practically from breast milk to fanta/coca cola in glass bottles I just can't get my knickers in a knot over it.

jeee · 10/05/2010 12:25

In a cafe, I couldn't work out why a woman on a table next to me was giving me dirty looks. My 4DC were behaving impeccably. We were having a nice time. Took me ages to work out that she was disapproving of my 1 year old sipping a bit of an older sibling's coke. And you know what, I'd have been that woman when DC1 was 4 or 5. My standards have slipped rather.

SwissCheeseIsHolyCheesus · 10/05/2010 12:26

As a treat ? Nah.

toccatanfudge · 10/05/2010 12:26

actually I lie - they usually go through the "Mazoe Orange Squash" phase as well, but that's only practical when somewhere that the water can be boiled first so out and about it's fizzy drinks.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 10/05/2010 12:28

I had a friend when I was younger (we were about 2/3 at the time) who didn't like milk, so had coca cola in her bottle most of the day. The exceptions were juice for breakfast and I think tea before bed. I haven't seen her since we were 5, but I can remember that her front teeth were rotting even then.

So I'd say that occasionally it's ok, but not all the time and deffo not from a bottle. I'm lucky as DS (2) doesn't like fizzy drinks (but always wants to try mine , but if he did I would probably limit them to a small amount in a freeflow beaker (not enough coordination for a cup yet!) on special occasions like eating out/parties.
