I let my kids have fizzy drink now and then, I do not think it is the worst thing in the world, ok so it has no nutrition value but its not going to kill them either.

Some parents do some don't, personal choice, however I do know one woman who prides herself that her children have organic this that and the other, no fizzy drinks, chocolate or sweets, thing is I see her child on the bus to school stuffing a face full of the banned goodies, and I do mean to excess a 275g bag of haribo and a coke at 8am maybe child would not do this if mummy was not so anal on top of the family diet

'thing is I see her child on the bus to school stuffing a face full of the banned goodies'

I see it all the time! A pity the over-controlling mother doesn't-but then the over controlled DCs aren't stupid!!

AliGrylls · 10/05/2010 19:47

I like your turn of phrase runaway.

I am anal about DS' diet to the extent that I want everything freshly prepared for him but I do agree that children need treats - otherwise you have a child with an eating disorder.

Ivykaty44 · 10/05/2010 19:50

But maybe her child would still stuff her face with sweets and coke anyway - so at least she gets good home cooked food the rest of the time and her sweet and coke habit is restrcited

Tulips I take issue with "the fizzy drinks had far less shite in them".

I have in front of me a bottle of Rocks organic Red Five squash and it contains:- water, organic fruit juices(red grape, red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and cranberry),citric acid.

Absolutely nothing else.

Your Fanta has:- carbonated water,high fructose corn syrup/and or sucrose,citric acid,sodium benzonate,modified food starch,natural and artificial flavours,sucrose acetate,isobuty rato,sodium polyphosphates,coconut oil,yellow 6,brommiated veg oil,ascorphic acid,red 40,dioctyl,sodium sulfosucft.

The makers of 7 up were nearly sued for their 'natural' claims.

Now if you want to give your kids a treat like I do now and again the beauty of squash is you can dilute it as you like so your dc aren't consuming 15 spoons of sugar per can as they do with fizzy drinks. Also it costs far less as a bottle of Rocks lasts me a loooong time when diluted and I have 3 dc. I am on a budget.

Along with vast quantities of sugar fizzy drinks also contain sodium (also best avoided) and as we've god only knows what crap.

Sugar in small quantities isn't necessarily bad,but sugar in vast quantities is very bad (teeth, obesity, diabetes). These drinks contain vast quantities of sugar, sodium-and total shite.

They are formulated to be addicted so your kids want more and you throw vast sums of money away on something that is very cheap to make.

My mother only gave us water as kids I still can't stomach high sugar drinks, even squash as I just never got used to them. Kids that constantly drink sugary drinks develop a taste for them and want more, often they don't like water as a result.

Now as a parent as I said before I couldn't give a stuff what others do but please don't try and make yourself feel better by inferring that fizzy shite is better than plain water, milk or organic squash which are all very easy to get hold of.

I am not saying feed children coke, chips and haribo 24/7 but every now and then is not the end of the world.

We go to the cinema every Saturday morning and we have a bag of starmix, we have even been know to have a happy meal from time to time, my children are fine and healthy

Ivykaty44 · 10/05/2010 20:09

No I know that not what your saying, what I did was let my dd1 get what she wanted with her own money, the coke and haribo just aren't things I buy, not on purpose I just don't.

I do buy chocolate but like the 70% stuff and biccies every now and then, it isn't anything banned about it I just didn't get agreat deal of this stuff at home and guess I just follow.

My daughter would often spend her money on magazines and a big bar of dairy milk, that is then her choice.

dd2 will walk up to the sweet shop and sweets with her pocket money, or get a milk shake and sweets in town.

I have no problem with that - as they get very little at home, poor things

Fanta ingredients here in Ireland are "INGREDIENTS: CARBONATED WATER, SUGAR, ORANGE FRUIT FROM CONCENTRATE (8%) CITRIC ACID, FLAVOURINGS, PRESERVATIVE (E202), STABILISER (E412), COLOUR (BETA-CAROTENE, E160e)" (sorry for caps, copy and pasted)

Robinsons orange ingredients are "Ingredients: Water, Orange Fruit from Concentrate (12%), Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Sugar, Citric Acid, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Metabisulphite), Sweeteners (Aspartame, Saccharin), Flavourings, Stabiliser (Cellulose Gum), Colour (Beta-Carotene) Contains a Source of Phenylalanine"

i'm not saying fanta is a healthy option by any means, but it's certainly less horrid than the closest squash equivalant

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/05/2010 14:54

See now this is where my standards have slipped.
DS1 now 11 has rarely had a coke...however DS2 last summer HAD to have it in a cup watered down as he would not drink juice or water and it was too hot for him to not have anything but milk. This was after hours of trying to get him to drink water/juice and him being thirsty but not drinking either.

MorrisZapp · 11/05/2010 16:02

Anybody who lets their kids have coke has to accept the consequences ie when they then go off like rockets.

I'm 38 and I can't handle the caffeine, it's like taking crack cocaine.

I never cease to marvel at parents shouting at their unruly kids while the kids are sipping on coke.

Er yes, your kids will go mad on that stuff. It's a chemical high.
