a converstion by saying "See you later"?

If the person does indeed plan to see one later, then clearly IABU. However, why does my local shop assistant always end our transaction this way. I mean WTF, why on earth does she think that she will see me later?

MamaG · 09/05/2010 17:36

probably next time you go into the shop

Thediaryofanobody · 09/05/2010 17:38

Oh stop moaning.
I'll see you later.

scurryfunge · 09/05/2010 17:38

It's just a way of rounding off the conversation, to let you know the transaction has ended.....I wouldn't read too much into it.

KurriKurri · 09/05/2010 17:39

When will she see you if not later? I suppose she could say 'Saw you earlier' or 'See you never again' but that might be a bit odd.

HamShine · 09/05/2010 17:39

she's your stalker

OrmRenewed · 09/05/2010 17:39

She could say 'now fuck off"' Would that be preferable?

I think it's just a friendly goodbye type of noise.

LittleMrsHappy · 09/05/2010 17:40

I always say see you later, I said Goodbye to my Dad and I was our finial goodbye. I wont say Goodbye again to anyone, as Im hoping that I will seem them later.

HamShine · 09/05/2010 17:40

Orm - have you seen the sketches on Armstrong and Miller that do just that?

headlessandclueless · 09/05/2010 17:41

i can live with that. its the anoyingoy xx's at the end of texts and emails that get me. i wouldnt kiss you in real life, so what makes you think its oki in the ether?

OrmRenewed · 09/05/2010 17:41

No. I think those must have passed me by!

It's a way of closing the transaction I suppse

SouthMum · 09/05/2010 17:41

I use it all the time, and say it on the phone to people Ive never met and never will

Tidey · 09/05/2010 17:43

I always like the way Charlie Brooker ends YHBW - 'That's the end of the show. Now go away.' Maybe shop assistants should say something along those lines instead?

HamShine · 09/05/2010 17:48

here, Orm

elmofan · 09/05/2010 17:54

see you later op

AWellHungParliament · 09/05/2010 18:00

I wish you had put the full sentence in your title.

ProfYaffle · 09/05/2010 18:02

'See you later' fine

'Laters' Now that's something to complain about.

nickschick · 09/05/2010 18:02

This xxx on the end of texts and emails really has me disturbed - ds2s teacher emails me most days (on a professional level) and I have to double check ive not xxxd my reply

tuarags · 09/05/2010 18:03

There was a time when a simple goodbye would have sufficed.

OP posts:
BelleDameSansMerci · 09/05/2010 18:05

I can't bear "talk to you later" or "speak later" either. Does this mean I should expect a phone call?

YANBU!

tuarags · 09/05/2010 18:09

and another thing. Why is it that when I go to my local bank, i'm interrogated on what I plan to spend my money on. I had to draw a couple of grand out last week and was perplexed to say the least, when the young cashier asked me if I was planning to spend the money on anything nice. WTF is it to do with him?

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 09/05/2010 18:11

I always say 'cheers' as a goodbye, but it doesn't mean I've got an alcoholic drink in my hand every time I say it

Jamieandhismagictorch · 09/05/2010 18:13

I think it's nice. In France they say Au Revoir, don't you know. Similar sentiments. Perhaps she is French?

I do this and then afterwards feel really akward, but can't think of anything else, good bye sounds too final, last time i did it and felt embaressed was at a job interview, it went well ( eventually got the job ) and said see you later as walking off etc, and then thought afterwards, 'oh god they think im being cocky, like i said that because i thought i was getting the job etc'

i don't mind others saying to me though.
