I don't like the dd's at 5 and 3 wearing black either.

petisa · 09/05/2010 09:59

Lol! Are you feeling a bit traumatised MamaG?

FWIW I like black clothes on toddlers and older babies, but maybe not on a 3 month old. My dd (just turned 2) has a couple of black t-shirts and I think she really suits them. They're nice with bright colours. When she was about 9 months old she had a black and white t-shirt with guitars on it and looked cute in it too. IMO.

I HATE fleeces though, even though they dry so quickly and are so practical, so I would prob give it to charity as well.

tethersend · 09/05/2010 10:00

I love black baby clothes- and they are hard to find IME.

My DD always looks good in black, even as a tiny baby. Especially with gold.

aendr · 09/05/2010 10:00

I got totally fed up of pale blue and white clothes on my son and did go to bright reds and greens and even dark blues as soon as I could (i.e. when he'd finally at 6 months outgrown the kindly new baby gifts of insipid newborn and 0-3 months baby clothes.) But as he's mixed race, bright colours look a lot better on him than they would on a very pale young baby. However black, especially on the top half, would be a bit dire too early. That said, my 18 month old is wandering around in (given to us) black trousers (size 9-12 months) this morning but by 18 months it's a practical doesn't show the dirt colour (though the white fluff he's picked up from cuddling a polar bear is making them look dreadful).

On the other hand, I did once see a really cute probably less than one year old in a black leather jacket and jeans with a pirate dummy and thought "that's cute" and "I hope he doesn't swelter, I wonder how comfortable he is in that outfit" at the same time.

So, you're not being unreasonable to want to dress your son in a way that suits him and you, and therefore not use it. You could sell it to buy something better or keep it for an ill and sickie/messy day, or as you said give it away and never dare post without careful proofreading again :-D

tethersend · 09/05/2010 10:01

Fleeces are indeed shit though...

MamaG · 09/05/2010 10:03

he's 18m so not teeny

I like bright colours too, reds, greens etc

dd (2.8) was given a Pingu shirt like this which she loves but, lik me, she actually looks awful in black as her skin is so fair.

MrsBadger · 09/05/2010 10:13

oh and ds(3m) is even fairer, a real english rose, and looks great in the trad wishy washy pale blues

awwww, i can't wait for my baby to be born so i can buy clothes! goes and drools on ASOS

I think babies look a bit grim in black, but it's up to the mother i think. Feel free to bin!

Gibbon · 09/05/2010 10:24

lololololololol

still chuckling here

WingedVictory · 09/05/2010 10:37

Has anyone tried dyeing? If you're faced with washed out colours which you hate, or poo-stained vests, Dylon is your friend, especially the navy colour. It's brilliant. Seam-stitching comes out white (as it is polyester thread), but that looks kind of denimy on a dark-blue vest.

SalFresco · 09/05/2010 10:39

I hate fleeces, whatever colour they are. DS1 has some lurid character ones which I loathe. I quite like black clothes on my babies, but they are both quite olive skinned - on a fair baby, it can look a bit strong.

shimmerysilverglitter · 09/05/2010 10:46

No I don't.

Can't stand Myleene Klass's "collection" in Mothercare, all blacks and greys and neutrals.

fifitot · 09/05/2010 11:00

Using Dylon is great. I combine their french navy with violet which gives a really dark navy. All my towels and kids'stuff which have faded go in there - spruces them up no end.

Make sure you clean your machine out after though!

Salbysea · 09/05/2010 11:03

I love black on babies, and all strong colors
DS has always had the odd black item, had a 0-3 baby grow in black

anything really other than old lady colors (pale blue and pale pink)

MNHubbie · 09/05/2010 11:05

I always loved darker colours on ours when they were around that age they were all blond at that age and whilst a little bit Hitler Youth (unfortunately) they did look good. The only issue we had with black on them at that age was that virtually every food for an 18mnth old is white or at least pale so no hiding or getting away with anything (not that we would of course).

MrsGokWan doesn't agree though she used to hate them in dark colours and I never really got why. Is it a female thing or a baby SS thing?

EarthMotherImNot · 09/05/2010 11:06

Oh god you've reminded me

Lo's mum sent a black with white spots shiny dress with that funny balloon hemline, more like a mini prom dress IYSWIM

She wants me to send lo to contact in the dress next week, oh, and could I take some photo's of her in it and send them too.

lo is 9 weeks old

I have to do it don't I?

YanknCock · 09/05/2010 11:12

DS has a black vest that says 'I listen to Led Zepplin with my daddy'.

Far better than the pale blue vest my crazy religious uncle sent over with the camouflage cross and 'GOD SQUAD' on the front, bible verses on the back. That went on ebay straight away.

Buttonnosedsausage · 09/05/2010 11:12

YANBU It's entirely up to you as to what your dc wears.

I've been given black clothing for my ds (6 months) and they remain unworn.

My sister- who works for a clothing company which sells black clothing for young children and babies says that her customers look to buy black clothing for their dcs.
I'll never understand it. Each to their own.

Salbysea · 09/05/2010 11:14

EMIN if I really hated a gift item (with no gift receipt) I'd always pop it on and get a pic straight away to send to the sender. That way it could go straight in the 'nearly new' pile and I wouldn't have to worry about parading LO out in it every time they visited

Shoshe · 09/05/2010 11:16

EarthMother I have just realised who you are!

When did you change?

And sorry MamaG, I loved my blondie little one in Black.

EarthMotherImNot · 09/05/2010 11:22

hi Shoshe, I changed ages ago, just fancied being a little less floral

Salby, good plan
