... in this election? Am watching the results, and am currently feeling quite shocked that the last 2 results have seen the BNP up a fair bit.

AIBU to be feeling a bit ?

Was an immigrant to the UK BTW, have left now as I was finding the whole in your face immigrant hate too much to take. Still have my citizenship (well, I paid a lot of money and worked my ass off for it).

you are doing a lot of generalising about other races is all. "fragile Asian girls" and "big strong imposing black men" sounds to me like a 30s novel. And being of Afro-Caribbean descent wouldn't automatically make you non-racist, people of all races are racist.

Ok.

I was setting the scene,I was explaining what its like to live in an area where even I genuinely 'fear' sometimes my own safety - I who have no problems with any race-so somebody who hasnt experienced the things I have such as working with the families, using the facilities usually used mostly by other races (opticians etc)-in fact when the local park was 'stormed' by gangs of Asian youths it was only later when talking to one of the groups that I mentioned I lived nearby and my dc were there that he said -oh we wouldnt fight your kids .

Im certainly not racist im probably the least racist person in Oldham .

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 17:31

Well- in my old house, we couldn't go out much because OUR local area was ruled by gangs of WHITE youths who would throw stones/eggs at our house, set fire to our bins, and generally run riot.

cory · 07/05/2010 17:31

Errr... a lot of street violence on British streets is actually committed by white youths. Is that less intimidating because they knock you down in a language you can understand?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/05/2010 17:32

Thankfully some seem to have seen the light here (at least in the local eection). The BNP held 7 seatson our local council - yes 7 - but they lost 2 yesterday

In my constituenecy the BNP PPC got 3196 votes.

tweetymum · 07/05/2010 17:32

notnickgriffinschick, you make some valid points. But I speak of the 563,743 who voted for the BNP.

Lets reverse the situation, shall we?

I was born Indian, but moved to the UK to study for a PhD. Paid four times what a home student would have. Worked for five years paying a huge amount of taxes. Did not claim any benefits other than the NHS. Worked for the NHS itself and treated a huge number of people, and did not discriminate on basis of race etc.

Yet, I have been yelled at on the street, by young white men, who don't like the fact that I am in their country, ostensibly having taken away their job. I have been sworn at on the tube. I have been told I am a 'fuckin Paki bitch'. That I should 'fuck off home'. I have been told I shouldn't come to their country and take their men (from a young white woman, who objected to the fact that DH was white, DH is not British and is an immigrant himself, but that didn't matter) I have been rudely treated in some pubs. I have been told 'all them immigrants are taking our houses'. I have been physically intimidated when I have been out with my very young DD (which was the last straw, and that's when we decided to move away)

At no point did someone actually say to me, hey, you know what you have contributed a great deal to our country by paying taxes, volunteering locally, treating people with respect, giving up a lot of my time for environmental causes, working tirelessly for ungrateful people... and not complaining about the day in day out abuse we immigrants got.

So, I am afraid unless this image of immigrants as lazy scroungers is amended, a lot of highly trained people are going to leave in the future. And that is going to be disastrous for the economy which is already struggling.

Sorry, for the long post, but this makes me so emotional. I adopted the UK as my own and was spat on in return. The fact that those 563,743 voted for the BNP is a slap in the face for all those hard working people put there who have immigrated to the country and are working their asses off for it.

giveitago · 07/05/2010 17:36

We like to blame immigrants for everything but fact is alot of the western economies are based on increased cheap labour that host countries don't provide.

They contribute to the economy. Yes, I agree there's not the housing or other services to cope yet we've based our growth on immigrants so that's what you get.

I have no sympathy for people to vote bnp because of 'immigration problems'.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 17:45

I'd rather live with immigrants than BNP voters. Tweetymum - your post made me embarrassed and ashamed to be British.

giveitago · 07/05/2010 17:50

And I'm still proud that only 563, 742 voted BNP and rest didn't - and I say that as an anglo indian.

CloudDragon · 07/05/2010 17:50

notnickgriffithschick - I work with about 6 people from Oldham, both white and Asian. They all think that the one of the most scary places to be is Oldham town centre on a Saturday night where it is basically empty of anyone except the white populous. And that the most violence is around at this time.

They all feel that both sides have become so segrated that everyone feels intimidated by everyone else. Fear breeds fear.

notnickgriffinschick · 07/05/2010 18:05

Clouddragon it is bad.

I was chatting to an Asian taxi driver (hed given ds3 a velvet art colouring set) and a white bloke spat on the ground in front of me in disgust that I was speaking to the driver .

lollopops · 07/05/2010 22:22

Do you not get scared when the white folk shout, or does it not matter because they share the same colour as you?

lollopops · 07/05/2010 22:31

What annoys me about you notnick, is that if these people had been white and doing the same thing, you would not have taken issue.

Who cares that the 'strong, imposing, black men' are talking in their own language. You said yourself that that is their natural tone. Then you whinge about the 'fragile asian girls'.

You may not be racist, but you sure as hell pay too much attention to other races who 'may frighten' you.

What a strange post notnick

we have a problem
it has been going on for nearly 4 years,
we have been targetted by the local scum family and thier "fiends"(that is a deliberate misspelling)
they make life hard for loads of people round here..
there has been times that I hate living here, why should I in my nice HA house, all adapted to meet dd's needs.
my dh has been accosted by the 12/13 year old "girl" and nearly knocked off his bike.
my son has had the dad shouting at him in the street(stopped now ds is bigger than him)
they have egged every wall and window(apart from dd's as they know that would be a step too far)
I could go on... but I think you get the picture, and we arn't alone, they terroise many familys and people.........
my point is they are white and british

there is good and bad in every race.

JennyPiccolo · 07/05/2010 22:44

BNP practically got run out of town in Glasgow last night. while i don't condone violence, it's good that people haven't accepted them as mainstream, they still provoke anger and outrage.

nickschick · 07/05/2010 23:03

Why the fuck should I answer to you the second coming?
you tell me exactly where you live and you tell me your dc ages and where they go first ......thought not - at least give my dc some element of privacy!!!

I actually posted initially to say yes it is bad and this is how the BNP gains seats through ignorance and people misplacing blame.

I really dont give a shit what you think or say about me but lets not drag my dcs exact wherabouts into this.

.

lollopops · 07/05/2010 23:12

Thanks 2shoes, you said what I was trying to say. When you point out the negativities of one race, especially one that isn't your own, you come up with very questionable beliefs.

Like I have said before, when you are 'different' you are under a microscope, and anything you do, can be perceived as threatening. ie 'Zimbabwean' men talking in their own language. It seems to me notnick, that you are zenophobic

lollopops · 07/05/2010 23:14

Oh and another thing notnick, some old people are scared by almost anything

lollopops · 07/05/2010 23:16

Are you nickschick or notnickgriffinschick?

Nick
I understand what you are saying, and I do not think that you racist.

Your post was well worded and thought out, and I thought that the comment with the strong men and fragile girls was nicely written, and read nothing else into it than that. The contrast between the strong men and the fragile women.

To those saying that there are white lads who frighten and destroy: Nick does not deny this, but she was trying to give us an idea of the area in which she lives. She is also trying to give us insight into why people vote BNP.

Basically, the problem seems to be that there are areas of the country that were deprived already, and are now struggling to adapt to the influx of immigrants and to integrate them. The fact that the area was already deprived is ignored by BNP supporters as they have found someone to blame their woes on.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/05/2010 23:52

How incredible. Was your Dad one of those horrible foreign, but otherwise strong, men intimidating other people, such as native ladies, by talking in his own language?
