i think its disgusting.

as if they are saying, we are marks and spencers and are posh, therefore don't want you single parents shopping here with your "poor people's vouchers", piss off to asda, you are lowering the tone.

the look on the cashier's face when i tried to use my vouchers in there, snobby bitch.

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:07

OP went into M&S because it was convenient not because of their superior quality of fruit.

colditz · 05/05/2010 22:07

I buy what I can afford and cook healthy meals from scratch too. Sometimes the cheapest way, overall, is to visit a shop that is generally expensive but which has a special offer on. Like M&S do.

Maybe if you shop around a little more, and stop discounting perfectly good value items just because they are in a shop that is generally expensive, you might find some flexibility ion your budget, Cupcakes.

Fibilou · 05/05/2010 22:08

Cupcakes, I suppose you would like the proles to be on a state-imposed diet would you ? Of the cheapest possible stuff just so that they don't get a better meal than you once in a while. Heaven forbid that a single mum might be able to buy a mango once in a while so her children can try it.

Or, better still, why not just send em all to the workhouse ?

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:08

Read what I post, Fibilou.

jessiealbright · 05/05/2010 22:08

But M&S is only more expensive if you're a bleddy idiot about it!

Also, I'm probably not doing myself any favours here, but... Their closing time is earlier than other supermarkets. With 2 dc, I can't visit Tesco at 10pm to get reduced stuff, but I can visit M & S at 5pm!

They reduce huge loaves of bread to 50p, and it won't go mouldy either!

Now, Sainsbury's basics bread you have to eat within two-three days, unless you keep it in the week. Hardly a saving.

Fibilou · 05/05/2010 22:09

I have read what you posted, cupcakes. I particularly enjoyed

"I suppose it's easier to be carefree when it's not your money though"

Sassybeast · 05/05/2010 22:10

Lauraly - Rustybucket is not even worth the energy. I think that fact that she/he is being ignored says more than anything

LittleMrsHappy · 05/05/2010 22:10

LittleMissHappy, an apple is an apple. A granny smiths from Asda is the same as a granny smith from M&S. You're paying more for the service, the shopping environment and the general niceness of M&S. Don't delude yourself that OP was shopping in M&S because of the quality of fertiliser that M&S spray their god damn apples with.

SORRY BUT LOL LOL LOL!, you are deluded!, did you know that M&S nearly went bankrupt, and made thousands redundant and had to name change for tax and to promote the store so a modern fashion, and in that they promoted it with lower prices! Marks and Sparks is just a % higher than a supermarket now!

your being ridiculous and thank you for the laugh lol!

colditz · 05/05/2010 22:10

So? I often do that too. And I don't mind people on benefits doing that - I don't care that 0.00000000003p out of my yearly income tax has paid for Emma Down The Road to buy an apple from M&S.

lauraly · 05/05/2010 22:10

Ah cupcakes but you have a problem with people on benifits using M&S not the OP...
my point is that surely a person buying superior quality is doing the best they possibly can for their child and not just seeing it as FREE MONEY as you so like to put it...

runnybottom · 05/05/2010 22:10

pmsl @ M&S apples being 3 times as nutritious.

All "quality" super charged apples in marks are they?

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:11

OK maybe M&S have cheaper individual items in some cases. But on an entire weekly shop, they WOULD be more expensive. I'm not flitting between several supermarkets because X is cheaper here, Y is cheaper there. I can't afford the petrol and don't have the time. I go to the same supermarket each week and I am happy with the quality I get and the price I pay.

Fibilou · 05/05/2010 22:12

This bit seems to sum up your attiture, cupcakes and you wonder why people are taking exception to your views

"I do not like the idea that my taxes might be helping lower income parents shop in bloody M&S when I have to buy my Smart Price bananas. "

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:13

People who believe the hype about M&S foods having super-powers = exactly the type of spanner that marketing people have wet dreams over...

colditz · 05/05/2010 22:13

marks and spencers fruit and veg is fresher. It has a much shorter shelf life, so when it's nearing the end of it's shelf life it will still keep in your fruit bowl.

I know this for a FACT. I used to work in a fruit packing factory (strawberries and raspberries mainly) and the M&S stuff gets 2 days cut off the estimated shelf life, and is more carefully handled. It has to be because M&S are RUTHLESS about sending stuff back if it isn't up to scratch.

LittleMrsHappy · 05/05/2010 22:13

Who said more nutritious (looks around" I said better quality!

shes not doing her weekly shop through, you can only use the vouchers on Fruit and veg and milk, and also vitamins!

anyway Im off to bed! Goodnight1

Fibilou · 05/05/2010 22:13

And since when has the OP been doing an entire weekly shop in M+S ? She went in, once, to spend on £3.10 voucher - which she couldn't spend anyway. She said herself she usually shops in Lidl and Asda. Or do you think that because she is on benefits of some variety she shouldn't be allowed to have a treat every now and again ?

lauraly · 05/05/2010 22:14

Nobody said they were 3 times more nutritious, just that from what you get in a smart price bag you can have more...

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:14

Oh do piss off or try reading the thread in its entirety, Fibilou.

Fibilou · 05/05/2010 22:15

I have read it in it's entiretly, thankyou. Or are you getting annoyed at having your own words quoted back at you ?

GypsyMoth · 05/05/2010 22:15

i only looked at milk fruit and veg.....a £3.10 voucher doesnt cover the weekly shop,so its irrelevant

Ivykaty44 · 05/05/2010 22:16

There are a few people that would be comfortable in sack cloth and up a pole. It rweally shouldn't matter whether the op wanted to buy mangoesteams in Harrods with her voucher or apples and pears off the market - fruit is fruit

As far as I know we still live in a free democracy and if those of you who don't like what a person spends "their" money (not your money) on then I suggest you move to a comunist state where you can all be watched together and told how to spend your money comrade.

cupcakesandbunting · 05/05/2010 22:16

Fibilou, I was answering a post wrg to M&S being cheaper in some cases than other supermarkets.

Are you a special brand of dense or do you just skim read things to fit in with your own agenda?

ruddynorah · 05/05/2010 22:17

instead of being disgusted on here OP why not do a quick email to m&s 'hello why do you not accept healthy start vouchers?' should suffice. then see what they say. i work there and have never heard of them tbh. we also don't accept those christmas hamper type vouchers. nor do we accept the school uniform one.

thing is, it's a fairly recent thing in m&s's history that they accept payment on cards other than their own..so to accept all the multitude of vouchers out there is quite something else.

so, go ask them..

0845 302 1234

or email them

colditz · 05/05/2010 22:17

Cupcakes, you've just shot your entire argument in the foot with "I'm not flitting.... price I pay"

that's precisely why your budget is failing and the OP's isn't. She will investigate all avenues of cheap, quality food (as will many mothers claiming benefits) and you won't because you don't think you have time.

It's you who is losing out for convenience, not the mothers on benefits.

You eat your smartprice bananas if it makes you feel virtuous. Most smartprice fruit is good value - but a lot of smart price food is nutritionally inferior to more expensive items, so be careful with what you choose in the name of economy.
