we are going for a 3d/4d scan on monday, dps asked mil if she wants to come and she said no, cos she does her ironing on a monday afternoon !

she lives with her dp and 40 year old son, they cant do their own ironing?

probably pregnancy hormones....

Don't get bothered by it - enjoy the time with yourselves looking at your baby.

scousemum · 05/05/2010 10:46

Her loss..just try to enjoy the experience for yourself.hope it all goes well for you!

BythewayItsStillMe · 05/05/2010 10:54

How odd!

Nevermind though, really not worth worrying about. You'll have a lovely time and won't even think about her not being there!

Just a thought though, does she mean her ironing or does she do ironing for someone else?
A lady I know gets paid to do ironing for someone else and she says 'I do my ironing on a friday'... just a thought...

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 10:55

she means her ironing... apparently ironing is monday afternoon, tuesday morning is cleaning the bedrooms..... there was more but i spaced out a little...friday is apparently her day to go out (husbands day off), apart from that she doesnt leave the house

Sorry, but that made me laugh
Personally, I would prefer it to just be me and DP at a scan anyway

girlywhirly · 05/05/2010 11:04

I would be annoyed and hurt too. Enjoy it regardless.

I can't understand why some people are so obsessive about when they do their chores, it's a ridiculous hang-over from the past. You just have to view it as they are missing out on a lot of things by being so inflexible, but it is their loss.

Be prepared for mil to continue being inflexible after the baby is born....

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 11:07

we are penciled in for saturday afternoon visiting...

OP posts:
scousemum · 05/05/2010 11:11

Sounds like you're 'lucky' she can fit you in ! Agree with girlywhirly though..old dogs and new tricks, best not to have high post-natal expectations.

My mil is a broom-riding old crone..but I have some super friends..can't win 'em all

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 11:13

she never leaves the house, how much house work can she have to do?

OP posts:
BythewayItsStillMe · 05/05/2010 11:17

Well, in that case... she sounds like she's living a very lonely life
All the things she must miss out on....

But on the other hand, if she did come with you you know she'd probably spend the whole trip telling you how she should have been doing her ironing!?

Have a lovely scan, hope you get some special moments

she gets up at 4.30 to make dp his breakfast because my reply to it when he moved out of her house was... you can make your own bloody breakfast, so he goes there...

then badly cleans her house

yep, he goes there on his way to work... i have 2 kids and another on the way, i'm not getting up at 4.30 to make him breakfast

OP posts:
gagamama · 05/05/2010 11:26

Your DP goes round there for breakfast because you won't make it for him? Or do you mean her DP? Anyway, regardless, she sounds quite batty and I would expect to to try and impart helpful 1940s advice about motherhood in due course!

scanty · 05/05/2010 11:26

My MIL (who I love dearly)makes me laugh and frustrates me. We've lived 400 miles away and the other side of the world. When we visit and suggest doing something on a certain day - you can see she really stuggles to change even the simplest routine, 'but I go to Asda on a Thurday' or 'Friday is when FIL and me go out for a few hours'. They don't work and really have very little going on their lives but she needs that routine.

I would be very very cross with my DP if he took the piss out of his mum like that.

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 11:30

nooo, he isnt... she likes it! i'm not just saying that, it was her idea!

OP posts:
potplant · 05/05/2010 11:31

I'd be a bit put out about her choosing ironing over my pfbs but oldies can go a bit loopy about their routines.

I am that your DP goes round for breakfast AND she makes it for him. Is he 17?

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 11:34

hes 38 and his dad calls him the golden boy

she has 6 children and hes definately the favourite

OP posts:
SirBoobAlot · 05/05/2010 11:36

Is your DP incapable of making himself some toast?

biddysmama · 05/05/2010 11:37

i know this and you know this..... but i'd go round if i was offered a free meal, especially if it was cooked by someone else!

They sound really weird from the other description. However, it may just be that she didn't fancy going to something as intimate as your scan. I have a very good relationship with my MIL but I still feel both of us might have felt that was a bit too private.

GeekOfTheWeek · 05/05/2010 11:41

at the breakfast thing. I just would not do this.

"broom riding old crone" - love it
