The idea of Paltonic Forms as he formulated it - that they are the base of reality - is patent nonsense. In the informal sense that is is often used it just means 'idealised abstract'. I don't like his semi-fascist political ideology either. Some of his epistomology is not bad though.

Kant isn't that impenetrable. An entire book on the Categorical Imperative, and the entire thing boils down to "do unto others....etc"

Kant is a cunt, as we say at my philosophy lectures!

Where would be without Plato and Aristotle?

EggyAllenPoe · 05/05/2010 14:48

is it in the nature of the shoe to exist, or is that not a required perfection?

BecauseIAgreeWithGordon · 05/05/2010 14:49

It'll be tickers next, you mark my words ...

pedrothellama · 05/05/2010 14:52

I thought maybe a classic black suede stiletto by Kurt Geiger and I have always wanted a jet black kitten called Midnight - we shall almost be coordinated.

Ooooh, ooooh I am not sure - what about the ballet pumps in sorbet pink with a pure white Persian kitten?

Or those little slingbacks I saw and a tortie

What would Plato choose?

"A gift of God is the wisdom which is the highest good, and this gift is only granted to those who devote themselves to the ultimate good to the exclusion of all other thoughts"

I think he means thoughts of shoes and kittens

Jamieandhismagictorch · 05/05/2010 15:16

in case you are interested - the man writes for Kerrang!

EggyAllenPoe · 05/05/2010 15:24

piffle. University of Glasgow. pshaw.

those four philsophocial questions failed to make my brain even vaguely throb. why didn't he try the Ontological argument on the populace?

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 15:29

Oi - don't diss Glasgow ;)

pedrothellama · 05/05/2010 15:56

It used to scare me that cartoon, that and Chorlton and the Wheelies with the witch that popped up and don't even get me started on The Singing Ringing Tree

[Behind the sofa typing this]

stickylittlefingers · 05/05/2010 16:07

I used to love the Singing Ringing Tree! I remember loving it, but not what it was about At All. A bit like my brain's approach to Philosophy...

pedrothellama · 05/05/2010 16:11

A chap at work bought me the dvd of the Singing Ringing Tree - I can't even bear to watch it now - the whole imagery horrifies me.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 16:16

I think we are getting a little off topic.

ooojimaflip · 05/05/2010 16:26

Ooh - where is the numbers thread?

OP posts:
pedrothellama · 05/05/2010 16:29

Jamieandhismagictorch started it

Jamieandhismagictorch · 05/05/2010 17:48

i cannot help having chosen a name that provokes nostalgia ...

CrankyTwanky · 05/05/2010 18:36

The last Christmas dinner my parents spent together a blazing row erupted on this very topic.
I'll never erase from my memory two drunken, middle-aged people wearing wonky paper hats nearly coming to blows over His musings on education.

And for that reason, I'm out.

Prinpo · 05/05/2010 18:55

Coming back to Plato for a mo, he did say that those who sought power were generally unsuited to hold office (as guardians). Might have been on to something there...

trixie123 · 05/05/2010 19:20

Prinpo, yes he did. and yes he was. Sorry I missed the shoes bit, what is the essence of shoeness? Also on the subject of kids tv there was something very zen and philosophical about Bagpuss and also that episode of the flumps when the cloud follows perkin around until sue and pootle chase it away by cheering him up. yay flumps! my DS will not be allowed to watch this modern rubbish. Mr Ben anyone?

runnybottom · 05/05/2010 19:24

Plato would have banned all that though, big into censorship he was. he thought that entertainment that provoked emotion was highly dangerous as the general populace couldn't contain themselves and would go quite mad.

pedrothellama · 05/05/2010 20:35

I have just come out from behind the sofa, can we now compare Hannah Arendt with Weber.

Just do not mention The Singing Ringing Tree

ArsMamatoria · 05/05/2010 23:43

Once upon a time I had enough of my wits about me to join in with this type of thread.

Instead, attatai oi moi, I've just spent an entire evening decorating a bloody cake to look like a horse.

Now Plato would deffo not have approved of that.
