Ok, long story, I went to a party yesterday for my friend's baby who is the same age as my DD (a few hours younger), they are both 1.

My friend's DD is tall for her age, and weighs 25lb, she is walking, my DD is just under 20lb, crawling like crazy but not walking, and looks 'small', she is very healthy and has no problems.

My friend introduced me to a relative (can't remember exactly the relationship) who looked at DD and said 'Aw, bless how old is she?', I answered that she was the same age as (party baby), and this woman responded 'oh! She's very small isn't she. She's a bit runty, is she healthy?'

I made a polite but swift exit from the conversation (before I was too tempted to force-feed this old fart bag lady several large sausage rolls.

I heard her use the term several times during the party, refering to my DD as 'the runty one'.

Was IBU to want to scream 'just cos (friends DD) is bigger than mine does not make my DD runty!!!'

...... breathe.....

RUNTY?

Wtf?

Jesus, some PEOPLE......

Am gobsmacked.

YANBU btw.

EricPicklesFatNeck · 04/05/2010 10:58

yanbu

but i am afraid i did giggle @ 'the runty one'.

she is obviously a loon

mumblechum · 04/05/2010 10:58

OMG how unbelievably rude!

Well done you for not whacking her one.

TheAgentZigzagLoonyParty · 04/05/2010 10:58

Well done you for not having a full on rant at her.

What a way to describe a baby!

The only thing you can do is feel sorry for her, she can't have many friends left.

NarabugHitWindscreen · 04/05/2010 10:58

Thing is she was really lovely apart from this, she was smily and chatty (not your stereotypical old fart bag) kinda threw me a bit.

Am so insensed I've barely been able to stop eating chocolate ice cream since!

Skegness · 04/05/2010 10:58

How extraordinarily rude. She's very lucky you didn't slap her upside da head.

ljgibbs · 04/05/2010 10:59

My god if some one called my DCs runty they would be getting a smack in the mouth.

TheAgentZigzagLoonyParty · 04/05/2010 11:00

Lol @ 'Am so insensed I've barely been able to stop eating chocolate ice cream since!'

sleepingsowell · 04/05/2010 11:01

That is awful. This is one time where I really think you should have let the social skills slip - she needed pulling up on that, big time. I don't know how you didn't stare her in the face and challenge her on that.

Will you meet her again? If so, do it next time!!!!!

Gubbins · 04/05/2010 11:07

Ahahahaha! My #2 is runty. I'd deck anyone else who pointed it out, though.

Mishy1234 · 04/05/2010 11:09

Wow, what an incredibly rude woman!

Very well done for keeping your cool.

BrokenBananaTantrum · 04/05/2010 11:10

OMG this woman was so rude!!

I still get similar comments about my DD and she is 3.

I remember several old women making horrible comments when she was a baby and people somehow think it is ok to comment on her size.

WTF is worng with people eh?

and keep up the ice cream consumption

stressheaderic · 04/05/2010 11:13

I'd have smacked her square in the chops.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 04/05/2010 11:15

Ha, insensitive obv, but also quite funny.

I'm with gubbins, though. It is rude to point it out but my dd was runty - which my dad in fact kindly informed me of .

Kids vary - some are big biffers and some are . . . um . . . runty.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 04/05/2010 11:16

Really, don't be too sensitive. Develop a thicker skin, it will help in the ensuing years.

4andnotout · 04/05/2010 11:17

I have 2 runty kids, infact we refer to dd4 as the runt of the litter (in jest of course) i don't think I would even notice I anyone referred to them as runty.

Rosesinautumn · 04/05/2010 11:17

Aggressive icecream consumption is the way I'd deal with it as well. Any chance that they were using the term runty with (the previously unheard of) meaning of 'the gorgeous, petite one'? Tis very rude, next time your in their company, introduce the relative as 'the haggard....but healthy one'.

soulsu · 04/05/2010 11:20

Some people, eh! My DD is only 21 lbs at 2.5, so god knows what she would think of her! Runty indeed, silly mare.

NarabugHitWindscreen · 04/05/2010 11:30

I think it might well be able to laugh about it in a few days time, I'm used to comments about DD as she has always been smaller than the rest of the bubs, but I think I need a little more icecream first......

OP posts:
Bramshott · 04/05/2010 11:34

I describe my own kids as "runty", but I suppose it's different when someone else does it!

waitingforbedtime · 04/05/2010 11:37

Very rude. When ds was little someone desscribed him as looking 'like a Romanian orphan' - I was

He is 3 now and the tallest in his nursery.

Firawla · 04/05/2010 12:53

It's extremely rude. I think saying oh, she is a bit small is not too bad but "runty" sounds like a really bad insult. I've never heard anyone call a child that, i would be quite shocked but maybe its a normal word for that lady, surely she cant have realised it was so rude? But yanbu to feel annoyed

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/05/2010 12:57

our dd has been described as runty, by us. She has also been described as having wingnut ears (in fact my dd still calls her that), bones, lucky legs and a few other names. I do think you are being slightly U, maybe the woman was of a different generation where you can describe someone as being consumptive?

Megatron · 04/05/2010 12:59

Well next time you see her you can just refer to her as 'the cunty one'. See how she likes it.
