- my DD is not 'RUNTY'!!!

Ok, long story, I went to a party yesterday for my friend's baby who is the same age as my DD (a few hours younger), they are both 1.

My friend's DD is tall for her age, and weighs 25lb, she is walking, my DD is just under 20lb, crawling like crazy but not walking, and looks 'small', she is very healthy and has no problems.

My friend introduced me to a relative (can't remember exactly the relationship) who looked at DD and said 'Aw, bless how old is she?', I answered that she was the same age as (party baby), and this woman responded 'oh! She's very small isn't she. She's a bit runty, is she healthy?'

I made a polite but swift exit from the conversation (before I was too tempted to force-feed this old fart bag lady several large sausage rolls.

I heard her use the term several times during the party, refering to my DD as 'the runty one'.

Was IBU to want to scream 'just cos (friends DD) is bigger than mine does not make my DD runty!!!'

...... breathe.....

Megatron

Is there a remote chance that she's a dog breeder??

In a few days, after a lot more chocolate ice cream, you'll be able to laugh at the daft old bat!!

It amazes me how people can be so rude and yet so nice... clearly she didn't mean it in a rude way - but OMG?!

Reallytired · 04/05/2010 13:07

What a horrible woman. My dd is one years old and is on the 0.4th percentile for weight.

I prefer to think of my daughter as being dainty rather than a runt.

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 04/05/2010 13:18

She was lucky you were so polite & calm about it. My dd2 is 1 tomorrow & 17lbs. I am sick of hearing even the nice things like dainty/petite/doll-like etc. If someone called her 'runty' I would completely lose it. How very, very rude. YANBU..

IngridFletcher · 04/05/2010 13:23

I think calling someone's baby 'the runty one' sort of goes beyond rude and into questionable mental health!

I was at a party once and my friends DS walked through a room I was sitting in with one other Dad who I did not know at all. this boy is big for his age and a little on the chubby side. This Dad said 'Cor look at the size of that!' I was so shocked I just sat there agape. I didn't share this gem with his mum obviously!

FranSanDisco · 04/05/2010 13:25

What a loon. Was she jealous in some way that your dd looked lovlier than the other child or something. I had a similar experience with dd when she was 1 yo. The party boy was 2 weeks older and not walking whilst dd was taller and running around. The Granny of the party boy didn't insult dd though she insulted me by telling everyone that the last time she met that girl (waving long tallon in my direction) she was half the size she is now and she was 6 mths pregnant. It took me the whole party to realise she was calling me fat . Seeing as she resembled a giant slug with claws it was a bit pot calling kettle. I can't wait to be a made old bint.

MadameOvary · 04/05/2010 13:26

Nice lady
I'd be pissed off too.

noeyedear · 04/05/2010 13:46

My mother told my cousin his 6 month old daughter had 'slitty eyes'! We were all mortified! She didn't think she was being insulting, I actually don't know what she thought (knowing my mother, probably nothing at all!) I can only put it down to my DS being newborn and it being the first chance for her to show him off to the family made her more loony than she usually is!

SalFresco · 04/05/2010 13:56

I describe small babies as "dainty" or "petite." But maybe she thinks "runty" is an interchangeable term with these sorts of words - that it just implies small - and doesn't realise how rude it it!

I'd have been annoyed though, so YANBU.

helyg · 04/05/2010 13:58

YANBU.

As the mother of 2 "runts" (one due to hormone defficiency, one just naturally teeny) I would have happily slapped her!

MoChan · 04/05/2010 14:12

Runty? I would have definitely informed her that she was being very impolite.

gegs73 · 04/05/2010 14:13

YANBU, though I think you have to take things like this with a pinch of salt from some of the older generation!

We went to a gathering at my MIL house when DS2 was about 10 months. One old 'dear' asked 'How old is he? He's a FATTY'. Needless to say he was rather well covered as he didn't move until he was about 14 months but even so. Must say I did think it was funny/outrageous at the time and he is alot slimmer now

NorkyButNice · 04/05/2010 14:14

Runty? How rude!

I get the opposite as DS is really tall with enormous feet - he's only 2.5 but people expect him to act like a 4/5 year old and I've had all sorts of comments.

Ignore!

ben10isgr8 · 04/05/2010 14:15

PMSL at some of the replies.

As a runt myself (4ft11 and a whopping 7 1/2 stone) I think she was rude, possibly thoughtless rather than nasty IYSWIM.

I would never describe someone as runty...tiny, dinky, petite, dainty..there are so many other words she could have used.

Are you over the ice cream yet...pass it along!

RunawayWife · 04/05/2010 14:16

OP if you are a cat and have a litter of 12 with DD being the smallest then fair play, if how ever you are a person and your DD is not a kitten then YANBU well done for not stamping on her foot

Tidey · 04/05/2010 14:20

Very unattractive word to have used, but clearly she was just that type of person. I was a bit chubby as a child and someone once called me 'solid'. Like calling a kid a brick shithouse. Bit rude really.

Was she the same lady of certain years and of slightly northern decent who got dear Mr.Brown into trouble?
Runty? She must have been mad.

TulipsInTheSunshine · 04/05/2010 14:28

my baby is 'runty' too... very apparent when he's sat next to my friends baby who's 6 days younger.

If anyone used that word to describe him though i don't think i could be responsible for my actions

It's bad enough that every sod and his mother for the last 4 months has exclaimed 'Oh my god, he looks far too small to be walking.. it's bizarre!' when they see him pottering about. I'm developing a twitch in response to that statement at this point.

UnseenAcademicalMum · 04/05/2010 14:29

Wow, what an incredibly nasty woman.

My ds2 was just over 18lb at a year old (around 2nd centile) and still bobs between the 0.4th and 2nd centile now. We also had a comment from a nasty old witch whilst waiting for a paediatrician appointment. She said "oh, he's so lovely and lively, how old is he?", I replied "he's nearly 18 months" so she said "really? he's very small, what's wrong with him?" . Thankfully it was at that exact moment that we got called in for our appointment. I'm not sure I would have held my tongue otherwise.

TulipsInTheSunshine · 04/05/2010 14:33

I've just worked it out (operate in metric normally) and ds2 is the same weight as your baby but older so lord only knows what she'd refer to him as!

fearnelinen · 04/05/2010 14:39

I'm always getting this as DCs were premmies. I was and the first few times some old dear described them as 'runty' 'weakling' 'ragamuffin' but now I think I may compile a book of the most insulting things old people think it's ok to say!

duchesse · 04/05/2010 14:45

I'm very glad of my runty baby.(ies) Less to carry and they get more wear out of clothes.

And 20lb at a year is positively large compared to my older daughters, who were that at 24 months. This one is 8 months old and weighs 14 lbs. I love it. I wouldn't even be offended- more likely to feel sorry for larger babies' parents because they must get achy arms.

Doodleydoo · 04/05/2010 14:49

I have a "littley" well she is now 1.5 stone so not giant and not small. I see it as an advantage to a)picking up compared to some of her younger and older more heavy friends
b) potty training - mine has only just started to show interest but some of her larger freinds have already started to complete potty training, because mine is little she doesn't look so odd in a nappy iyswim as the older ones who look 4

Well thats my excuse anyway because I am to lazy too busy to potty train.

Doodleydoo · 04/05/2010 14:51

BTW YANBU to be pissed off, does make you want to grit your teeth and spit the shards at people doesn't it!
