Gulp. Was 09:00 when I looked in on this site. Time for me to use Leechblock.

ChippingIn · 04/05/2010 13:24

LOL

It's no good using something you can turn off yourself!! Maybe you'll have to get NetworkWife to put some kind of a block on it!!

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 13:51

you still here, ChippingIn?

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 13:52

you've only got 18mins to go...

ChippingIn · 04/05/2010 13:55

Oh Bugger - am I going to have to namechange??

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 13:59
  • nah, then I wouldn't be able to think "at least ChippingIn is as bad as I am.." - it's quite comforting really!
ilovemydogandMrBrown · 04/05/2010 14:06

So, you are driving to a school. Do you:

a) park on zig zag line?
b) park on the sidewalk
c) park in the marked disabled spot

None of the above. They are all illegal, and anti social

ChippingIn · 04/05/2010 14:27

ilovemydog - what are you doing lurking outside our school every morning?? It always seems like these are the only options!

(Before anyone starts - it's an 8 mile trip to school so I'm not walking there and it's in the country with no roads near it to park in and walk from there - school parking is our only option).

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 14:35

do you know, I read that post and went "WTF is she talking about???" and then remembered what the thread was originally about

RunawayWife · 04/05/2010 14:40

Its stopping distances and speed limits I am struggling with

OP posts:
ChippingIn · 04/05/2010 14:56

Thumb - me too

Just popped in to say G'night - be back tomorrow (over in the Southern Hems at the moment!!)..... for an hour (or so!!!!).

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 15:04

I'm in the S. Hem as well Chipping - no excuse, you lightweight!. So that'll be an hour or 3 then!

RunawayWife - stopping distances are best remembered in feet.
20mph - x2 = 40ft.
30mph - x2.5 = 75ft.
40mph - x3 = 120ft.
50mph - x3.5 = 175ft.
60mph - x4 = 240ft
70mph - x4.5 = 315ft.

Worked for me, anyway. They can't tell you you're wrong if you give the answer in feet either, because it's still the right distance.

What's the problem with speed limits?

NetworkGuy · 04/05/2010 16:59

ChippingIn - the other PC has MN locked out until 22:00, and I will shortly put it on this one.

In the meantime, just to point out that when you create a "block set" (can handle lots of different domains, so you could block "Social Networking" and block FaceBook, Twitter, Bebo and perhaps other sites, all under one 'block set' name) also has restrictions so you can

  1. block pages on the sites once time period entered (or time limit exceeded - eg 10 minutes per hour allowed)

  2. prevent access to options for the block set when sites are being blocked

  3. prevent configuration of blocks

A neat idea is that you can have a "tab" open on a blocked site and use "restrict to 30 minutes in 6 hours" but the '30' minutes only gets counted when the tab is active, so as long as you get on with other things it should not be classed as using any time...

I've set a block of 0800-2200 as I really must get on with a project to make some cash!

ChippingIn · 04/05/2010 21:29

TW - I feel like a lightweight! My friends little darling has given me his sore throat/cold... feel like utter crap! Dealing with N Hem & S Hem stuff at the min, so feels like 24/7 is 'daytime'!! (Good tips re stopping distances!!)

Runawaywife - I got my DL at 15, I would hate to have to sit it now!! Maybe if you tell TW what the problem with speed limits she'll have some good tips there too - so long as they are for the UK not AUS!!!

NG - that really is clever isn't it - I wonder how it calculates the time active on a tab? See - already trying to work out how to trick it - I need help!! LOL

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 23:33

Heh heh - I hope you're doing something useful with your morning Chipping! Where in the S.Hem are you? Is it holiday or work? [nosey emoticon]

Networkguy - it is pretty amazing what can be achieved - but not much use if you can disable it yourself. Can't you get someone else to do it and password-protect it to save you from yourself?

NetworkGuy · 05/05/2010 02:43

If you use options 2 and 3 then it would 'save you from yourself' - if MN leeches too much time, better to have no override, and accept you have an addiction !

thumbwitch · 05/05/2010 02:53

NG - wtf are you doing on at this time of night/day? Or are you in the American sector?

I fully accept I have an addiction - but it doesn't cause quite as much weight gain as the chocolate one so I'm not too worried just yet.

ChippingIn · 05/05/2010 07:47

TW - NZ. I was here on holiday, but due to unforseen (very traumatic) family events I have ended up being here a lot longer - I am due to go back soon though and . I spent the day in a book-cafe trying to plan some renovation stuff for when I get back to the UK. I didn't take my laptop so I got a lot done!! It's really only a way of distracting my brain from thinking about things I don't want to be thinking about though (the reason I am here and I don't want to out myself by saying what, I am pretty sure my horrible SIL is looking for me on here!!).... (It's supposed to be somewhere anonymous where you can bleet on about the bloody in-laws, not have them bloody tracking you down!! sigh, grrr, pout).

NG - nah, I'd only have to go and track down another PC/laptop ... but I will keep it in mind for the future if I can't behave!!

TW - have you not evolved to being able to eat while MN'ing or are you just so distracted you don't think of it??

Runawaywife - how's the studying going? Only 8 days now....

NetworkGuy · 05/05/2010 08:03

No, TW, am in UK. Just that I stupidly had a nap around 5pm and slept 4-5 hours. Decided I would get BBC iPlayer installed on a machine and queue up a pile of TV shows to download when I am asleep again (probably soon). Should have sorted out some items for recycling box for the bin men due today, but then remembered how going out tends to cause neighbours' floodlights to come on, so didn't bother - don't generate massive amounts so can wait another week.

Decided I had better "stay awake" to send someone a text about not being able to be in a particular place where we normally meet.

Shame I dropped a reasonably new (but cheap) Nokia mobile in the loo, as it had a function to send at a particular time, making it easier to send when someone is likely to be awake ...

I've woken a few people up in the past sending texts!

thumbwitch · 05/05/2010 08:15

Cheeky mare! I just don't like getting chocolate on the keyboard

to hear about the situation - hope it all gets better soon.

NG - bummer about the phone! And the nap too for that matter.

NetworkGuy · 05/05/2010 08:57

"park on the sidewalk"

as against "driving on the pavement", of course.

The wonders of English here and afar...

ChippingIn · 05/05/2010 11:04

TW - sadly it's not a 'will get better' situation. It's a permanent 'how the fuck do we live with this' situation - thanks for your wishes though....

My keyboard needs cleaning regularly - it's a wonder it still works!! It's a well fed machine

NG - I get woken up with txts too as I keep my phone by my bed (it's often the only number I am contactable on), drives me nuts - so I am sure some people are very grateful that you are so well behaved

NetworkGuy · 06/05/2010 17:20

Sorry to read of your 'will not get better' situation. I did start writing something here yesterday about hoping you can sort things out as it is a long distance between there and UK, so any arrangements will hopefully be lasting.

As for phones - I have a cheap Siemens on Virgin Mobile which can do the alarm thing while calls and texts are incapacitated by me "switching off" the phone (clearly they're never off while there's battery life, else the button switching them on would not work).

Have tried suggesting others get cheap phones that can handle alarms without waking them for calls and texts, but normally get a "cat's bum" response, so I'm only "well behaved" after a few individuals expressed their annoyance.

I have to laugh about one situation, however, where I had been working like stink at a radio station - Tuesday 0900 to Thursday 2200 with only breaks for some food and coffee, and then Friday 0900 to Sunday 1000 (and then a 2+ hour train journey home).

Rang my "boss" at about 2:30 on the Sunday morning, to give a status report, fully expecting (like any sane person) he would have his phone switched off (this was 10+ years ago, so they were usually on charge at night), but instead woke him, and his wife, at 03:30 as they were on their last day of a visit to Paris (lucky ones).

I felt a little more joy that I'd woken him, when I considered how he was "living it up" while I was doing the hard slog, and he would probably pay me only a portion of the fee charged for the work. I think I managed to push him to around 90% - a bit over 2K (!)

NetworkGuy · 06/05/2010 17:27

Hey RunawayWife what are you doing back here! How many threads were you on yesterday? Seemed like quite a few... Back to that revision!

Right this minute !!

Seriously, or do you need a spanking ?

RunawayWife · 06/05/2010 19:52

I have read the highway code cover to cover over and over.
I have done the theory book time and time again

Done the online test over and over got 97 out of 100, gets to the point where it all blurs in to one.

Still problems with stopping distance and speed limits, why can I not remember these bloody things!!!!!
Drove yesterday and today as well.
